difference between first gen b16a and b16a1 ?

i knoe d main difference between the first gen b16a is dat its a single cam vtec and the newer ones have double
yet the power output is pretty much the same ?
116 kw or 160 hp
was wondering what are the main differences ?

hmm to my knowledge all B16a's are DOHC VTEC's with two camshafts.

theyre mainly the same, the earlier B16's to my knowledge have more webbing on the short block, making for better cooling properties over the 2nd gen B16.

Apart from that, not sure what the other differences are, perhaps cam profiles and other slight changes, such as sensor locations etc etc

Hey Jay,

What you are refering to as first gen B16a and B16A1 is one and thesame thing - B16A1 is the first 1.6l DOHC Vtec motor.

the D16AY on the other hand is the 1.6 SOHC vtec motor.

Generally:
B16A1 comes out of Honda Civics SiRs and SiR CRXs from 1989-1991 (correct me if Im wrong)
B16A2 came out in the Gen3 CRXs and later on in the VtiR civics (once again correct me if im wrong)
d16Ay came in a Civic Vti in the EG series...

B16a1 or B16a2 they both are DOHC

B16a1's are found in the early model JMD SIR CRX&the EF9 SIR CIVIC

B16a2's are found in the EG SIR EK SIR (VTIR) EK coupe VITR and the CRX del SOL

Aus spec have 116KW (160hp) and the JDM spec have 122KW (170HP)

the main diff for the power increase is the diff compression ratio

i dont have a pic available - maybe someone else does...

but i think generally whats refered to as b16a1 is a b16a simply because the B16A2 acually have the '2' stamped into the number.

So even though there might not be a b16a1 stamp on the actual block you can easily refer to the generation as '1' because the '2nd' generation has the '2' - if that makes sense?

I personally refer to the engines as b16a1 and b16a2 as its much easier to distinguish the differenced - whereas if you say to somoen I have a b16a they will ask - cable or hydro.... saying 1 or 2 makes the difference quiet clear in my opinion...
