    3rd Generation Automatic Transmission Prelude

I think I should start from the beginning...

Around April last year I was driving through Sutherland across a bridge and the car started slipping out of drive and the only way to be able to not hold up traffic was to completely turn the car of and then back on which would allow me to engage drive for a few seconds.

Turns out the transmission was screwed I have no idea what it could of been but i have seen the end result of shrapnel infested transmission fluid.

It has been what nearly 10-11 months since then and it is still not fixed, can someone describe me how hard a rebuild actually is, me and my mechanic have been waiting on so called "gear grinding and fine tuning" from a specialist who had lost the parts I personally drove to him.

Now I don't need any criticism about my mechanic it has been a side job for him and i haven't really cared till now as I do have another car.

But if someone could explain how hard it is and the cost involved it would be appreciated (i am paying 1700 max).

    Thanks again!

Get a refurbished gearbox, cost is around 1500-2000.

Common issue with the auto preludes.

if you have all the parts in stock nesseary then you can expect to rebuild one in 1 week, that should include removing from the car

    reality is

    - you have to dismantle the trans to identify what parts are damaged and need replacing
    - you have to order your parts in, ( from Honda presumably ) and wait for them to arrive, and if they are ex Japan well you know the rest.
    - assemble the trans and reorder shims if nessary to set clutch, shaft and final drive preload and clearences to compleate assembly.

Hi there, I drive a 3rd gen lude myself who have been involved with tranny issues. Try honda wrekcers and get a second hand tranny and whatever the parts u need. It costs way too much to fix it or re condition it. I have learned my lessons and don't to go the dealership

Hi mate, where are you located? I have autop transmission issues with my 86 BA1 lude and did a hellavu lot of research on where to find the best rebuild people and what they cost to rebuild generally. I know it's a lilttle different for a 3rd gen then mine but could point you in the right direction.

You will likely not get parts from any honda dealerships however if you get the right transmission expert they can match parts from other transmissions to make up the correct rebuild kit.

I wouldn't spend money without knowing what's wrong.

There is a tran ecu which can give you error code. Read that and see what could be the issue.

In case you have money, and not bother, just get the 2nd from wrecker.

Pretty happy with the price actually.

The shaft that goes from the gear box to the engine blew up i suppose he pulled it out and showed me, turns out the automatic transmission that was in there was secondhand and wasnt put in right!

ok well good luck then. In the grand scheme of things $1800 is reasonable for a rebuild considering the time and labour involved.

    Best of luck my friend.
