Insight Motorsport S2000 gears up for Yokohama WTAC 2015

We would like to take you, if we may, down the memory lane. It’s 2008 and Australia’s first national time attack event, Superlap Australia, takes place at Oran Park Raceway. After a full day of racing a winner emerges, a Honda S2000 built by Insight Motorsports and driven by John Boston.

Fast forward seven years and that same car is getting ready for its new challenge – taking on WTAC’s fastest Open Class cars.

It’s hard to believe this car was actually purchased brand new in the early 2000s and is still owned by the same person today.

A lengthy process of modifying saw the car progress from a stocker to a mildly modified street car to a part time track car, to a full blown time attack racer. Last year the car competed in Pro Class where it clocked in 1:33.89 with John Boston behind the wheel.

“Pro Class is so competitive nowadays that to keep up with the top guys you really need a purpose-built car.” said Scott Khuner from Insight Motorsports, “This car might have evolved over the years but underneath it’s still an S2000 and Elias wanted to keep it that way.”

“So the decision was made to cut down the aero and remove the flat floor to make the car comply with Open Class rules. We have taken the floor out but we still need to cut the front splitter down and that is next.

“Today we wanted to get out and finalize the track tune and get Steve comfortable driving the car.”

The engine is capable of producing close to 700hp courtesy of Precision 6466 turbocharger. Engine management comes via Emtron ECU. Those gold canisters are remote reservoirs for Moton suspension.

“We’ll have Steve Glenney driving for us this year. Today’s shakedown gave us some very encouraging results.”

Considerably wider that its factory siblings, Insight’s S2000 is barely recognisable from behind.

There’s some serious gear lurking under the boot lid. Note the exhaust weaving its way around chassis components.

Volk wheels and AP Racing brakes – a tried and proven combo.

Plenty of high tech wizardry in the cabin but you can still see the remnants of the factory dash.

“I’m confident we can give the top guys in Open a run for their money this year.”
