Unhappy Honda Accord Power Steering High Pressure Hose

    Dear friends,

I would appreciate your advise on fixing or replacing a leaking power steering high pressure hose.

I own a 4 cylinder (2.4 Lt) Honda Accord 2007 (wide-body, not Euro). The vehicle has been well maintained and always serviced by Honda. They had never mentioned any issues with the hoses and it never has had any fluid leaks. Recently, I noticed the power steering fluid was low and up on a quick inspection noticed a leak from the high pressure hose, near the engine clamp that holds the hose, as it crosses over the engine.

I have contacted a number of Honda service dealers in WA, and they charge $430+ just for a 1 meter long hose (with the labour closer to $600)! It is a somewhat "special" high pressure hose and cannot be obtained from the local suppliers that I have tried. An alternative option, offered by hose specialists, has been to refurbish the existing one which approximately halves the total cost, yet, may result in excessive noise as the fluid is pushed through the refurbished hose.

I found out that the Accord Euro's hose had a recall because of safety concerns regardign leakage, but Honda Australia rejects fixing the wide-body models (like mine), even though they too wear out over time and leak in a similar manner. In fact, I discovered that Honda dealers in WA (& perhaps other states) sell the hoses rather frequently! Despite, my continuous support for genuine Honda service and parts, Honda Australia have let me down, and the only option they have given me is to spend $600 for a part which basically fails prematurely.

I have been advised to consider purchasing the part online but unfortunately I have not been able to easily track down the part number suitable to this model. Honda are not willing to give me the correct part number either! In the USA, the Accord may have different suffixes and not sure which one would be the correct one and I definitenly do not want to get the one for Accord Euro (mine is the wide-body)

I would appreciate your help regarding the correct OEM part number as well as any other suggestions you may have. Thank you.

I am assuming you have tried ryco or pirtek. Have you tried other Honda dealer for the part number? Some of the are quite helpful.
    Does it look like this,

    Hi Martin,
Thanks for your reply. I had not considered Pirtek or Ryco, but had tried a number of local part distributors and wreckers; Will give them a call, but I feel that their best solution is a refurbishment.
The model you had sent through is very similar (if not identical). I believe that a number of Honda vehicles (including non-Accord) use a similar looking assembly. You never know until you try it on the vehicle or be sure of the exact part number.

On a positive news, I might have found the Honda part number for a standard 4 cylinder Accord: 53713-SDA-Q51. Hopefully this helps other users.

Since I topped up the reservoir, I have done close to 60 (km) of gentle driving and have barely lost oil. So, the leak must be small. If leaked oil drops on the exhaust manifold (rear side of the engine) it burns and the smell comes in the cabin. Since top up, two occassions have been noticed.

I was thinking of finding the size and exact location of the leak and, if feasible, "sealing" it with special glue or self-amalgamating tape. Any suggestions, people?

I checked OEM acura parts website (euro) and the hose part number is 53713 sec 305 and it cost a tad over US$200. Sometimes the number can be different even though its the same parts. The amazon part I shared was using 2007 accord and not the tsx (euro) but it is also compatible with the tsx (indicating the parts are the same).

When there is a leak, you should replace it. I am not sure what pressure self amalgamating rubber tape will take.

    Martin,
    Thanks for the follow up.
I ended up taking it to Pirtek and having a new pipe made on the spot. It took about 30 minutes and the guy was friendly and did a good job. I have installed it and have driven 20 or so kilometers; it has had no issues so far. The Pirtek technician will even call me to follow up! Very good service and thanks for mentioning their names. The cost of the part worked out to be less than a third of the OEM from Honda, and it supports a local (national) business!

On a different note, if other users are considering purchasing an item from the USA, please note that the power steering is on the right hand side of the vehicle for all Accords. For Australian cars, for instance, the hose is shorter (the steering rack and pump are on the same side) whilst for, say, a US model (most parts of the world) the hose is longer to go across the car and reach the steering rack. Basically, the bottom metallic pipe for Australian models is much shorter.

Honda needs to be ashamed of itself for looting the Australians and I hope Honda pays the price for unprofessional and unethical practices.

    Thank you all.

    That's good news.
Thanks for highlighting that the American supplied hose has different length.
