Frankie,
change your fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve, inflate your tires to 36psi, and get iridium spark plugs. that will fix it up.
Frankie
19-08-2008, 09:54 AM
my air filter is new k and n,, i was suppose to put the fuel filter in on the weekend but i couldnt get the bottom pipe unscrewed of the filter to hard so i just left it....i will try the other things aswell. see how we go fillin up today

Not really cos if the vtec car is not flooring it, it may be why he is getting better milage. Also he may be counrty driving and your city driving, all depends.
Also if o2 sensor only kicks in whilst cruising. If your starting and stopping all the time its not gonna help.

I just got a turbo put in so im going to be stopping to fill up a ot more often, im getting it tuned next week so hopefully that may fix my problem because i have never seen any fuel on the ground and my cars parked in the garage the whole week normally.

about 450 per tank (~40L filled most occasion) or 400 with 2 hours of skid pan (with around 5 ppl in the queue every time) on a dc2r with spec B cam
the secret: running about 16:1 a/f at part throttle rpm and load
(rough value converted from fuel setting on pfc, might be more or less in the real world)..
krogoth
23-08-2008, 08:19 PM
16:1?
slightly lean?
im sure its safe mostly....but i think its better to run a little rich especially on full load and high rpm, though im not sure

EK1 with B18C + bolt ons, currently untuned, averaging 400KM, with granny driving @ 3k rpm shifts and occasional vtec, getting tuned shortly and have been told the 500KM mark wont be hard to reach.

ok guys on 98 ultimate, my ek4 did 340kms... i don't understand how its being so thirsty?? (NON VTEC DRIVING)
im trying ultimate now...
my previous post was using shell...
after this test im gonna try shell again with no big trip...
because i just bought my car bout 3 weeks ago, my first fuel up was with ultimate, but for some reason it didnt pour to the top and clicked with about 2-3 litres left. but i managed 380km b4 light came on...
omg .. something is definetly wrong with my ek1 .. i know my last post i said i got 450 .. but that is incorrect i thought since i was getting 250 on half tank i thought it would last till 450 .. well it didnt 2 day i was low .. and i only had lik 420km on it .. wtf is wrong and this is shifting at 2.5 and sometimes 1st gear pull .. isnt my car pretty shitty ? i dont even get 450km with full tank :( i think something is wrong with my fuel filter .. any suggestions wats wrong with my car ?

Although the indicator is saying half tank, it doesn't mean it's half tank in there. The meter drop slowly on the upper half, and goes faster on the lower half.

420km on an ek sounds just a little less than normal to me... there are many factors with deviations from avg... fatter tyres.. heavy car.. etc etc
i dont think theres any major problems with that measurement... just put in some bp ultimate or injector cleaner to clean the engine and shell be fine im sure...
i get around 460km on 35L... but if i go 25L of shell unleaded & 10L of BP ultimate i pull off around 500-510... thats with some spirited driving thrown in... hehehe

Fuel economy today 8.2/100. Yesterday 5.90/100

How much fuel are you counting per tank?
Only way to really count is top up tank full. Drive it till you get close to empty, then refill and see how much fuel you've lost.
The level is never 100% accurate as a measure

could need a good service. Or blocked air filter / fuel filter -
or even the tyres are slightly under inflated.
The above can drastically alter your fuel economy.

i hit 728 out of a tank in my old Si (d16a8) - which is about 5l/100km.
Highway cycle.
i later hit about the same (700ish) out of about the same amount of fuel (36 litres) out of the same car with a b18c7 engine.
1.8 vs 1.6 , 1.8 sitting on about 3800rpm constant and the 1.6 sitting on about 3000.
Off boost or high cam , most cars should get decent numbers on teh highwway.

sorry abit offtopic, but why is the b18 has higher highway rpm? shouldnt it be alot lower since it's a powerful torquey engine? or does that have something to do with the final drive ratio?

that is not possilble mate no way i have tried that 550 is tops
especially with the 4.78 box u have
and also u would have one of the most economical cars in australia with around a low 5.4 lt per 100kms
do the math - a full tank of 98 octane , on a eg hatch is about 35-36 litres right ? I filled 35 in (first click) , got to coffs harbour and half back again then to wakefield and back. 2 tanks both with 700. No lies here.
Off highcam , consistant revs on the hwy should give decent results as above.

well, everytime i pour full tank i would reset my odometer thingy. and it ends up around 350-370. also another problem, everytime i vtec my car or gun it, by fuel meter goes up or down. is that normal. it ends up back to the same position i fink after a short period of time. sometimes i dun noe when to fill petrol because of this.

i don't think most of you guys have a clue what your talking about and just throwing numbers out. Here's how you should be checking.
1) fill up car to full, reset the milage tacho
2) drive car normally until empty or close to empty, however you drive
3) fill up to full and check the actual ltrs exactly & check the milage reading. (usually you reset it again so you can keep monitoring)
4) apply the following formula
Total KM/100= X
Total Fuel/X= Y (this will give you the total ltres per 100km)
If you don't do the above, don't even bother posting your kms cos it will be virtually useless, and a waste of the thread.
You should repeat the process as you will get different readings depending on driving style, fuel etc...... Its a good way of keeping an eye on your car for any problems.
P.S anything like 8ltr per 100km is pretty good, anything below is excellent.
Anything great than 10ltr per 100km isn't so crash hot if your driving normally & most likely should be serviced and looked at.

limbos right
thats what i do everytime i fill up.
i usually get around 430kms on 33L which is around and avg of 7.7L/100km. thats on normal unleaded.
on premium/bp ultimate i get around 7L/100km. (470kms on 33L)
this is also mostly peak hour driving in stop go traffic & also running fatter tyres (205 instead of recommended stock size of 175)
just installed new exhaust.. well see how that affects it my consumption

last time i checked, most fuel tanks use a buoy type measuring system.
when you accelerate, weight shifts to the rear of the vehicle, and hence the fuel shifts to the rear. when you travel at constant speed, fuel sits level.
so when you accelerate hard, weight shifts to the rear, the top line of the fuel is hence on an angle instead of being level, causing the buoy to drop down a little (30L of fuel sitting on an exponential like curve would probably have the meter reading something like 20-25L instead, depending on the acceleration of your car).
then when you cruise at a constant speed, all directional forces essentially balance out and the fuel sits level again, so your fuel meter reads the fuel level correctly
even if im wrong about the buoy type system, the physics match. and although my explanation may suck, those who have watched initial d should get the gist of it by watching the way the water in a cup behaves.

My EK civic has a 45L tank. I'm kinda obsessed with fuel effiency too! So far I usually get about 8L per 100k in town (I know, not good but hey, I like taking off quickly!) so about 550k. BUT once I'm on the highway, sitting on about 110kph, I've often got 5.6L per 100k. I've regularly managed this, a few trips from Brisbane to Melbourne and Brisbane to Cairns have proved it. So around 800k per 45L tank! From a ten year old Automatic! Although changing from stock to a pod filter and new extractors dropped by about 1L per 100k.

does anyone else's trip meter measure in every 100m's? when i was reading and seeing you guys go only in the hundred k's and looking back at mine in the thousands got me perplexed at why mine measures in hundred metre intervals. 6.66/100kms btw after making the switch to premium unleaded
did 370km from a full tank, mostly drivin with air con on...Is that normal? btw i got a massive hole on my b-pipe:(

i hit 728 out of a tank in my old Si (d16a8) - which is about 5l/100km.
Highway cycle.
i later hit about the same (700ish) out of about the same amount of fuel (36 litres) out of the same car with a b18c7 engine.
1.8 vs 1.6 , 1.8 sitting on about 3800rpm constant and the 1.6 sitting on about 3000.
Off boost or high cam , most cars should get decent numbers on teh highwway.I'm with Lan on this, the most conservative highway driving netted me 520 km's with 45liters.

how much does your car weigh? Are your tyres same as OEM (standard to engine) circumference ? Turned or standard ECU ?
I will take into consideration , that my speedo could be 3.3% off (due to tiny bit smaller circumference tyres) but 3.3% of 700 is around 22ks give or take.

i can't help myself but by stuff for it. i'll often just go into kmart etc and check out the bargains. yesterday i got a homemaker 26cm cast iron fry pan for $14! bargain! lol. i even figured out its all the kmarts etc at smaller shopping centres that have more bargains left. bigger stores sell out of them quicker cos of higher customer flow etc lol.

also run good oil and just did a gear oil change with some added g70 so its running smooth internally.

Just wondering if anyone has gone from heavy wheels (e.g 17 or 18s) to smaller wheels and resulted in a massive difference?
I've got some pretty heavy ass 17's on my EG Si atm and only getting around 400kms. Been reading some of you get 600+ which is crazy!

Just to rephrase; when I say massive difference I mean like 150-200kms.
Is that possible? By just changing to smaller wheels

400 sounds reasonable, seeing as them si's only got 30L tanks (dont quote me but), im running 15" wheels on stockies and my car is a sedan EG
ive been only getting 310km's, but nowerdays after a month of using bp ultimate, its approaching the 450km mark. i am to believe im driving the same way i always have just getting more efficient some how. pay about 45bucks a week on petrol. either that, or im just getting less footing
i think when the guys get 600+, they know what their doing. MAYBE they have really really light feet on the gas.

afaik all your tanks are 45L
and 'a tank' is a pretty meaningless figure since you never suck it dry and never fill it to the same capacity
all you guys getting under 400k's per tank on relatively stock motors probably have heavy feet
that said my lightly modded b18c7 gets about 10l/100km on bp ultimate tuned on crome

Id be concerned if you got below 500km to a tank on the y8, I use vpower, drive spiritedly often and clear that mark with ease
had 17's and got the same k's, 15's didnt make a huge difference to fuel ecconomy and the tyres funnily enough are the same price for the same brands :( lol
I'd be getting that looked at

redbook says the tanks are 45L, i only assumed 30L cuz thats how much i only fill up each week and i get about 350km's out of it. i dont like to ever let it go over 400km but now im leaning more n more closer to 400km's,

So i get about 380-400km out of a tank.
That's with a d16a turbo driving from livo > chatswood for work and back- through sydneys peak.
I found out BP fairfield was selling Wynns Hi-octane boost for $10 a bottle. (also fuel treatment, injector cleaners etc)
So i gave my EG a full tank with octane boost- i get more KMs!! like 460kms and im sure i wasn't granny driving because i was testing if the octane boost gave any performance increase many times in traffic.
So i think $10 is worth it for the extra kms and performance increase... lol
What do you guys think? Bad to keep running octane boost? - i went and bought another 5bottles just yesterday.

My EM1 is getting about 9L/100km. So that is 500km out of a full 45L tank. BP Ultimate or Mobil 98.
That's with plenty of driving in gridlock and spirited driving when I get the chance. Let's just say it's wound out fairly regulary. After all, it's B16a so it begs to be revved.
Sometimes the number creeps towards 10L/100km, but its never done more than 9.9/10L.

Filled up today 33Litres of V power 98 that got me 370km.

With my EH9 VTi. D16Y1 CAI + header. Normally getting about 450km before my light comes on, that's driving with a bit of pedal now and then. 400kms if I drive silly all the time.
And a month ago I did about 150km on the freeway and I managed to sit right behind a Ford Territory in their slipstream so I managed about 533km and the tank took about 40-42L can't remember how much. Was great :D

sounds just about right. gotta remember these cars are starting to get long in the tooth so its fuel efficiency has lost a bit of edge.

421 km from 39 L
= 9.264 L/100 km
Not bad considering it's to Uni and back during peak hour traffic.
Have a feeling that it's going to be quite a bit lower this time around.
