ok man first u need a d16a8 and then maybe you might have a leak in your engine bay from a fuel line or smoething??

check fuel rail etc, you car is prolly running way to rich!!

the solution:

d16a8 :D

Mr. Focus

hahaha spoken like a true 'd-soldier'. he does a point though. you might have a leak you havent seen or running rich

i get 300-350 out of 37-40l's of permium. sometimes 400 if im lucky and not driving as hard as i do normaly. On my way to work i have a 300m vertical climb. Im sure my car is running a little rich tho. I only get 500km's with 100% highway driving. I do have 300-400kg;s in the boot though.

Guys,

BLKCRX is a 400kw CRX... boosted to the MAX - hence why he's only getting 300kms out of a tank!

I used to get a consumption of 7.2L/100kms... which would get me close to 450kms out of a tank. - then the consumption went bad - to about 9.xL (350kms) but its slowly getting better after a recent tune... hopefully back to 7ish..

yeh, also guys, alot depends on how short/long ur trips are? when i was travelling 20-30kms to work every day from strathfield to frenchs forest, i was getting alot better mileage than usual. Usual for me is alot of stop/start trips less than 10kms per trip.

Anthony38
08-10-2004, 02:52 PM
On my Em1, the most I have ever done on a full tank is around 450km.
I dont know if I can do anymore, by that time the fuel light comes on! Too scared to carry on. Part of the reason why I haven't pushed it further is because of the fuel gauge, its always going up and down on the last half. So I really never know how much I have left!

How do you know when you are burning rich? Is there a solution if you are?

regards

Krim

All you guys getting 500+ kms are you driving manuals ? (Stupid question i know but it makes a difference)

Also, if you are running rich then how do you stop your car from running rich ? :)

As for me, most ive gotten is 450kms from a tank. Usually around 380-420kms city driving.

Between city driving or higway ive had from 350-500kms....for one tank.

Since my conversion my fuel light hasn't worked so i never run it down, but i get pretty close .. perhaps 1/8th left... that is usually about 30/35ish litres and i get around 400 from that, once I hit 400 i usually fill up cuz i never know exactly how much is left in the tank, EG fuel meters can be pretty inaccurate =)

bubblecivic
08-10-2004, 08:11 PM
i was at hannys with a friend so i thought i'd ask today,

he goes "your running on 17s and your exhaust is too big thats why your getting less KMs" haha

telling me to return to stock and all

so if you have big wheels i quess it takes more revs to push the car.

PhatSol
08-10-2004, 09:16 PM
Heavy wheels will harm fuel economy, but a better exaust should improve it due to lower backpressure (less power wasted pushing the exaust gasses out).

Well i did my best and worst economy in one day, was quite a long drive.
Did about 580km during the first few hours of the trip.
Then as it got later, and i grew more frustrated i did 210km after i refilled my tank, can i hear you say vtec and 5th gear?
On a private highway ofcourse.

Wow, old thread!

My new EG VTi is staggering. I thought, yeah, 1.6L VTEC will use more fuel. But I get about 600km/45L even around the city. Because it cruises at 3k at 100, I use the same fuel on the freeway as around the city.

My '84 Civic was a bit strange. It'd get 11km/L around the city and 12.5km/L on the freeway. But it'd get 13km/L when I was flat out on the twisties.

Vivski
12-04-2005, 10:33 PM
Nodachi, are you sure you're putting a full tank into it? If you're actually getting 170km to a whole tank, I'd be scared. 'Cos that means you're losing about 20L of petrol!
I'm guessing it's a gauge issue.

I only drove out to the shops and back... It's haunted...:(

Just wondering does premium and all these fuels acctually help economy? or does it just slightly. Is it worth getting if your only after economy rather then performance? i got a breeze 1.3 carb and i get about 430+km i tank and thats reving high on the occasion(using optimax)...?

I get at least 450km per tank with my VTi coupe. That's a combination of freeway and city driving. Pretty easy to get 550km with freeway driving.

Figures are quoted with the following mods: air filter, 4-1 extractors and 2.25 inch custom made exhaust system. Might get even better fuel figures if a VAFC is fitted. :)

I normally fill up around the 450km mark (EG GLi) with a fair bit still in the tank. I haven't gotten it to the point of the fuel light coming on yet so I'd be interested to know how far it will go before it actually runs out.

I've been getting 400km or so out of a tank with regular 3000rpm driving and the occasional traffic light GP. cars turbo'd as well so i reckon thats quite good. Haven't taken a long highway drive yet so they are city figures.

However my fuel guage jumps around a bit so one of these days i'm just going to get a full tank, and a 5l jerry can of fuel and drive till it completely runs out. If i can get 450km regular driving i will be very happy

i was wondering....would a cars ecu have to "learn" a different brand of fuel ? eg. knock sensor when using too low a ron rating ? ie everytime you use a different brand of fuel.

would mixing different fuel types alter the properties of these fuels ? eg. some get more kms with mobil, some more with BP etc. what if you had 50/50 of each.

This last week i managed 323km out of 33.4L =10.3L/100km
i find my car runs best with Mobil 8000>BP Ultimate>Shell Optimax>Caltex Vortex although some instances earlier this year, ultimate made more kms than 8000.

nar, it just burns it the same i think. The advantage of higher RON is it burns at lower temperature so the engine runs cooler and more efficently. which results in less fuel needed to be burnt.

and yeah, i rate mobile and BP 98octane as the best. If possible, theyre the only 2 ill get, but since theres a bp around the corner it usually is what goes in lol

its quiet the opposite, high octane fuel ignites from higher temperatures (such as spark plugs etc ) and results in a normal combustion wheras low octane fuel might pre-ignite by low temperates in cylynder hot spots etc and will turn an engine to scrap. you will not get a lower engine temperature if u use RON and u will not get more kms off ur tank. infact i usually get about 90kms more evrytime i fill up with regular unleaded, i've done this a number of times and results are similar with my car everytime.

Maybe because your air/fuel ratio has changed? And even more so after your exhaust was fitted.

My Auto EK CXi best is 483 on around 35L with about 75% of HWY driving, suitcases and 1 passenger (fuel light didn't stay on, but the needle was bellow the last marker). I run Vortex Premium cos you can get it a Woolworths up here. I fill to 2 clicks on the bowser. I've just done 310km at half tank, stupid Honda gauges and tank though generally only get about half that for the last half tank - So I'm expecting 420-450kms off this tank.

I used to get up to 700kms out of my old excel, was majorly bummed with the honda, but I think the excel had a larger tank.

all depends on driving conditions. if its lots of stop and start/ heavy traffic then thats not too bad with a bit of spirited driving.
mods will often cause the engine run rich ie worse economy as the stock fuel map is not suited to the modifications.
i've found short ram intakes to cause my car run quite rich while a CAI setup with longer intake arm to run less rich. i came to these conclusions basically from the amounts of soot building up on my rear bar.

Posting for a friend:-

I've had this 93 EG hatch 1.5l carbie for the past 6 months now, everything is factory stock and i seem to only get 300-350km out of a full tank, and that's pushing it right to the empty line. This is using just regular ULP, and driving everyday in the suburbs changing gears at around the 2.5k-3k mark. When i bought the car, it had just had the radiator, timing belt and water pump changed. On freeway runs sometimes, maybe i can get 400km if i'm lucky. I was under the impression that this car should be making at least an easy 500km+. It does however have a tiny hole in the exhaust somewhere, but im not sure if that would be the cause of the bad fuel consumption. Does anyone know what i should be checking out for to make the fuel economy better? I was thinking of changing the ignition components such as the leads and plugs, but is there anything else i should be looking at?

Thanks in advance =)

(Also posted in the Civic model specific/fuel thread, but doesn't seem anyones checking there too often)

I get up to 640km's running city/highway on my 50L 05 Vi Hatch. Less when I feel like engaging in vtec thrillride.

I notice you get more mileage running on better quality fuel. So try to go to a servo who gets their fuel replenished regularly and I noticed also running on 98 Optimax/Vpower gives you good econ, personally i think it adds up to getting regular but with more power!

Also got a 2" catback and drop in k&n panel filter and after putting them in i realise my fuel efficiency has increased purely because the fact the car requires less effort to drive with less backpressure. It also makes it easier to decrease fuel efficiency bcuz with a loud exhaust and more accel responsiveness who wouldnt want to push their car? :P So its like a double edge sword.

Don't do that, it quickly messes up your fuel pump. It's exactly what i did with my accord 93 when I had it. Filled up really late for a few times. And one day when i was drivin in the city. Car started chugging... chugging.... stall.. wtf. Cudnt start it up again bcuz fuel pump failed. Wouldnt suck fuel up even if my fuel tank was full cuz long term wear burnt it out.

I learnt my lesson and now as soon as the fuel light pops up I'd try to look for the nearest servo. And usually when ur lights up u got like 7/8 L's left.

it pays to service the car with not only an oil filter and new oil but every say 20000kms put some new plugs in and perhaps clean the throttle body (youd be surprised how much crap is in there) and replace the O2 sensor every 60-80000kms. Plugs and O2 sensor make a hell of a difference in fuel consumption.

with a b18 right? much difference in consumption with the b16?

i haf also found that resetting ur cars ecu ( take off neg terminal for 5-10mins)
gives more accurate reading of fuel.

eg. the light wud come on earlier b4 wen it isnt even near empty yet
now i get more accurate reading of wen the fuel is actually near empty (light comes on)

minimum 450kms per tank and thats not in light traffic and includes me giving it some pretty frequently. depending on my mood/traffic etc i average 8.5-9.5L/100

how much do weight affect fuel comsumption ?? like how much weight would have a significant fuel affect?
we talking 10s of kg or 100s of kgs

drive with the correct tyre profile, and you would have a more accurate reading of kms on your tank

Fuel saving tips:

- Always check your tyre pressure bout every fortnight? - Tyres make a big difference to your fuel consumption, if your tyres r flat you are rolling slower than you would usually meaning u need to accelerate more. I put 32psi on my stock civic

- Windows up when ur travelling above 70km - too much wind resistance slows ur car down.

- Get rid of unnecessary weight. Any extra weight makes a difference to any car. Most the people here get shit fuel consumption because they have 2 subs 4 amps etc.. thats like 60-70kg worth of stuff.

For us Civic drivers, If you've been driving for long enough, you'll notice you have to push ur car a tad bit more when you have a passenger sitting with you and you'll most probably have to floor it up a hill when you're driving 4 people :). So how much does the person weigh? That much extra weight causes you to accelerate more, using more fuel.

And most obviously, smoother acceleration. no need to gun it to get to 60 and stay on 60 :p. I just love catching up to people at the lights when they gun their cars at every light (people at brisbane who drive on gympie rd would know what i mean, almost have to stop at every light)

If you follow all of the above, you will most definitely notice improvements in your fuel consumption. :)

I clock about 450 - 500km from about 40 - 45L of Vortex (95 RON) in my 01 civic.

I've never put anything else in it, so I can't really comment on how much the fuel is helping, but it keeps me happy.

Are you serious?? But even with the quoted 7.4L/100km, that works out to be 608Km on 45L. I probably drive it a little harder than they would in test conditions so I think my 500 is perfectly reasonable.

600km on a 45L tank

car: 98 EK CXI

edit: your low petrol warning light lights up when you have used up 37L of your tank..

usually people would go refill then.. but keep in mind you still have 8L in your tank.. and that is approximately another 100kms more you can go b4 u realli need to refill.. that petrol warning light should light up i recon when you have like 2 or 3L left

i also see peoples talkin about Wieight of your car contributing to using more or less petrol... so getting carbon fibre hoods can reduce some weight too.. but i dunno how much less a CF hood weights compared to a stock hood..

lately i have been averaging around 8L/100kms or getting over 500kms regularly, filling up around 40L each time, i used to get 400+ish but that was when my thermo was stuffed ever since i changed it, fuel efficiency has gone up :). this is with a combination of highway and city driving and good a hit here and there.

Ima getting about 550 kms per 40 litres on My Si without air cond on (city and freeway) which is pretty neat. But air cond jumps on and ima getting 380kms per 40 litres (same driving conditions). Is this normal?

Well thats a bit excessive to say air con takes out 170km's per tank, it might realistically be 50-100kms. It really depends on your driving style, yes its true that air con puts more strain on your engine while your driving so my suggestion is only turn your air con on after the car has been driving for bout a minute, turn it off when ur going up a massive hill, turn it off when your car has reached a nice temperature you could settle for 10 mins without constant air con and just let the outside air flow through cuz that air will be cold for a little while.

If you do all that, u will be sure to conserve some fuel.

steve88
14-04-2007, 05:34 PM
about 33L = 400km occasional thrashing. premium unleaded, dont use my aircon much; but always blast stereo/subs... this would be suburban/city driving.

d16 engine, EK civic. only mod is catback exhaust (don't see how that'd effect petrol consumption :p)

well, assuming that my tank is empty when its at the red zone, i think i can clock up 550km per 40L tank on E10 95 octane ethanol based petrol you can get from united petrol stations.
altho most people are against the use of ethanol, its perfectly fine to use it so long as you dont leave a full tank in there for a month (leave it that long and the ethanol would oxidise to ethanoic acid), that and my motor is a d15b412 dual carby, so whilst the stock intake system is rather cruddy with sucking in air, i make up for that with the oxygen present in ethanol. surprisingly, works better than bp ultimate for me. hopefully i can get better economy once i run the new piston rings and head in.
