EK centre console into EG

.:1st DIY thread:.

After looking at the crazy prices the eg centre console (at least 200au) goes for i decided to look up on alternatives.
Turns out an ek console can be put into an eg with some modding, but hasnt been well documented. i decided to check it out and do it myself.
Getting the ek console to fit flush is all about chopping away at the plastic a little and measuring it up in the car to see how it fits.
If you're going to follow this make sure you don't end up cutting too much off else you're going to have random gaps.

things needed:

an ek centre console (40bux from hondwrecks)
stanley knife
pair of pliers that work like a nail clipper or even a pair of garden scissors
screwdriver
sandpaper to smooth down cut plastic and give a clean finish

here's what i did:

Outlined in red are the plastics i shaved off to make it line up

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4631/71186392.jpg

i then drilled 2 holes on each side and joined it up with the remaining eg part. the legs on the metal frame also had to be chopped off for
the 2 plastics to sit nicely. the frame it still secured by the eg plastic but :)

the din slot was an issue as more room was needed behind, so the metal brackets were taken off, and i measured up the extra space for the din slot to fit

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/7264/dsc05840j.jpghttp://img27.imageshack.us/img27/4999/dsc05845h.jpg

you can see here now there's more room at the back (added the non-slip material also :P)

note: the console hasnt been pressed up flush in this pic. console was just pulled back a bit so the camera flash could get a good image of behind the din.

Results (finally installed and interior cleaned up)

Before and After

ANOTHER DIN SLOT! :honda: many ideas come to mind :D

The pics should pretty much explain everything. i know people have gone on about how the ek centre console wont match up nicely and isnt secure.
i guess its down to how precise you want the pieces to line up. It took some effort to get it all lined up flush and secure. screwing the plastics together made it firm and isn't going to budge if its accidently kicked or knocked.

now theres something filling up the original empty space where you can actually put things elsewhere instead of the passenger seat

100% satisfied with this DIY. if you aren't willing to put down 200au (up to 300au on ebay) or so on the eg6 centre console you may consider doing this.

Added close ups and measurements:

cigarette lighter panel measurements (give or take a few mm)

and the measurements. gap is around 2cm.

That is leet dude...Great work. out of the box thinking.

I think it looks better than the eg6 console. That upgrade would look great on all black interior.

deff might do this myself.

can you still use the ashtray?

cnez
29-04-2009, 12:44 PM
Sure I just didn't put the ashtray back in for the picture. The screws I needed to screw the console on were in the ash tray. Itll eliminate the coin box thing but...since u need to cut the dinslot shape. U could chuck in the gauge holder din slot into the ek part and not need to cut into the coin pocket slot.

but this means bye bye cup holders

cnez
29-04-2009, 01:22 PM
Not really...I didn't have an existing eg cup holder. Plus u can get the din slot cup holders :). Atm I've got the cupholder that attches to the vent sitting in the space untill I get a din cup holder.

cnez

i havent tried using ek cupholders. had to modify the integra cup holders to fit though as it did bump into the metal at the back.

whole ek console including armrest?

perhaps drill couple holes on the armrest so that they line up with the 2 holes the regular eg console bolts onto? hopefully that works.

1cm gap :S:S show up some pics

Did this today. Kinda screwed the eg center console up tough, shouldn't have cut the sides of. Just the middle section but o well it ain't noticable. Also put the EK arm rest in and it looks gangsta, made the top lip on the EK center console sit under the eg coin pocket where I cut for another anchorage point for EK one. And instead of ugly non stock screw holes, I used the plastic I cut, to make plastic " brackets that screwed into the stock EK screw holes and allowed me to cable tie it all down to the stock eg mounts. It really is stuck down well and looks good + no more loosing my coins and phone. Only complaint is the gap on each side up front but meh, nothing some silicone and vinyl can't fix. Might do an updated DIY on filling the gaps when I get more time

Sorry if i'm bumping an old thread guys but couldn't help it. I'm doing the same thing, got the console to fit except that I can't fit it WITH the original EK cupholder tray. It would hit the metal frame at the back. What to do guys ?

cut into it, dont touch the spring/reloading mechanism.

vyrus
23-10-2011, 03:10 AM
Ok I cut the cupholder as much as I could (left the spring mechanism) and it's STILL hitting at the back. It's an EK cupholder. As per my calculation, I still need to cut atleast half an inch more. And i cant do that because of the spring. Man what do I do bro ? I really need this!!
