o hai thar errbody.
i did this DIY because i got rid of the old shitty looking handbrake boot/cover when i put my type-r shift boot on, the collar on my old stock shift boot was broken, so thats why i got the type-r shift boot. so we will be using the old stock shift boot.
ive been meaning to do this for over a year but never got around to it.
so here we go, bare with me. :p
first of all you will need to remove the center console part to get access to everything, which is this bit (ignore that ive pushed out the 4 little bits as they got put back in).

here is the handbrake which we will be using the old shift boot on.

here is the old shift boot we will be using (id already taken off the old broken collar). see those holes there at the front which is 1st, 3rd & 5th side, we will be using them later.

now flip it inside-out, and pull the thick rubber band thingo off (it holds the shift boot and collar together, it might also be a little tight to get off aswell. its in the middle of the 2 broken halves of the collar in the picture) then pull the collar out/off.

next flip over the center console to have a look inside.

slide the old shift boot down in there, making sure the 2 holes i mentioned earlier are at the bottom (if the center console was the right way up) and pull the end out so it sticks out a bit (sorry forgot to take a pic of this). like in this picture.

now cable-tie the ****er there.

time to whack-er back in the car, be careful when sliding the old shift boot over the handbrake. the hole in the end of the shift boot isnt quite big enough to fit so it might split the threads a little bit, but isnt noticeable.

all done, just bolt your center console back in, ill post a couple finished content pictures too.
