Living in Big-Brother's Shadow

Honda's neglected hero,

the VTEC-D15B engine

The D15B engine http://asia.vtec.net/article/d15b/dohc.jpg
In the mid 1980s, Honda's top engine in the Civic was the DOHC ZC delivering 130ps and redlining at a high 7200rpm. This engine powered the top Honda Civic models; the EF6 & EF7 Civic/CRX Si. In 1989, Honda invented VTEC, implementing it first in the DA6 Integra RSi & XSi in April and followed by the EF8/EF9 CRX/Civic SiR towards the end of that year. Honda continuously refined VTEC and migrated it to other engines and one of the first benefactors was the D15B.
The D15B has always been in the shadow of its larger, more powerful 1.6l brothers. When the DOHC ZC was the top engine, the D15B came in both single and double carb'ed SOHC versions, the dual-carb version delivering as high as 105ps in the CRX 15X. When VTEC became available, two versions of VTEC D15Bs were developed for the EG-series (1991-1995) Civic. One is the well-knowned VTEC-E which delivered an incredible 20+km/l mileage. The other is the VTEC D15B, a power implementation. The VTEC D15B is a very significant engine variant because Honda used VTEC to make it possible to generate as much power as a DOHC design from its SOHC configuration. Thus the VTEC-D15B generates 130ps and redlines at 7200rpm, ably replacing the DOHC ZC design despite having 100cc less displacement and one cam-shaft less !

No need to steam alcantara seats.

Ttry get hold of some upholstery cleaner from an upholstery shop and give them a wipe down with a microfibre cloth every 2 weeks (I use one to apply and one to go over it) and give them a wipe down. Then give them a hit with the vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to 're-plush' the alcantara; and also to get rid of the 'crap' (eg sounds disgusting but dead skin, dust, pollutants from air when you drive with your windows down etc etc) that builds up on them every day and you should be fine :)

Yeh but don't get that foaming shit rubbish for alcantara I don't think the condition of them would be that bad! Plus I've seen a guy use that one on his.. think it was a VW Jetta or something... and he totally f*cked up the alcantara and the company wouldn't reimburse him because it said on the pack to try in a small area first before applying to seats incase alcantara went funny. Ouch.

Haha, keep your windows shut! LOL.

Funny because I hate driving with my windows up...even when it is raining! I just leave the back ones open a touch if it's not too bad hehe ;)

Stupid rear swaybar being an ass while im trying to put in my coilovers. And now i can't wind them any shorter cos the cspanner won't fit, the rotor heat shield thing is in the way -_-. makes me wonder how some people can get their ride slammed when they can't even fit their hand in between the rotor and top of the arch.

I have the exact same issue. I imagine it comes down to small differences in parts/tolerancing between the two sides. Just measure hub to guard and you'll be fine. My mate was having the same problem with his gtr too.

In other news, I adjusted the valve clearances on my poor old d15 (340000ks) runs a load better. Recommend this to anyone who hasn't had it done in the last 50-100000 ks

Took it for petrol, scrubbing hard on all 4 corners. Only time it's not making sounds is driving straight on a perfectly smooth road.
Was gonna get the rears rolled and raise the front half an inch. Will this solve my problems ya think?

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/4658/20120107122254.jpg

Sitting still, the tyre is about 5mm from the guard. Thought coilovers would be stiff enough so that they wouldn't have much travel

I had a look and it seems the front it's scrubbing on the fender lining not the actual guard. Might try and sand it down or cut it a bit, don't really wanna take it all out.

The point of it is to stop dirt/water splashing into your engine bay and to protect the wiring/loom shit?

Ideally leave them in whenever possible. I don't and rarely have but you probably look after your car better than I do lol and they are there for a purpose. I also think the car as a whole looks neater when they're on. Ive never had loom issues without them myself although on cars Ive owned in the past that weren't shy of a dirt road the stray rocks can knock out high spots on your fenders. Can also easily happen with road use.
One method Ive used in the past is sourcing liners from another car with suitable concave shape somewhere in its design. Cut the problem area out on Car A making allowance for the concave shape from Car B to fit. Keep all the cuts clean, even both sides, well finished off with a 20mm overlap. Throw in around 4-6 pop rivets with a little Sikaflex on the faces that meet up to seal them. I used plastic rivets but aluminium should be fine if you want to paint them. Done correctly you'll have a nice gap and no more scrubbing. If done right it can be a pain. If done roughly, well your probably just better off ripping them out lol I wouldn't do it again but I was pretty full on with the car I did it too and it worked a treat.

All that being said have you had the wheel off and looked around the chassis? You'll see patches of bare metal if it is scrubbing in there as mine is.

The green machine is well over the top. Kudos 89lude. Makes me want to dig into my pockets for just..one...more ...build when I see work like that lol

I think it's either 195/45/16 or 205/40/16 by how much it fills out the guards (horizontally). But the red one has some stretch? Afaik a 195 on 7 width wont look like that

Thanks man, is all in the prep.. degreased, sanded then washed twice withwax and solvent remover before painting, then left it to bake in the sun on 36 degree day over concrete.

Yeah all stock, obd0.. ecu is socketted but just running stock program.

Red valve cover looks good, when in engine bay it wont look so bright.. good job on the masking og the plug holes etc, i was lazy n just painted the lot minus the oil filler hole and the underside obviously.

Well the stock leads I had on were quite old.. so the difference I've found is how well the car turns on and runs, its so dam smooth like new. It used to take a few cranks and be a touch rough. For the price though you cant really go wrong.. This is also paired with new NGK plugs.

Removing carpet and leaving sounddeadening looks bad imo. Respray your shifter plastic back to black.
Whats the point of the guages if there all the way in the passenger view, pretty sure if ur racing and need to check ur gauges it
would be easier in the pillar or on the dash slightly to the middle. Why did u need a 11,000rpm tacho slap bang in the middle of your cluster,
are you revving more than 9,000rpm?. Take it as constructive criticism

thanks for the reply. there was a reason i put the gauge in the passenger side, because there is a hole there, and i was thinking for to cover it.

as for the deadening, i work FIFO, havent really got time to get to it, the carpet was stripped when i bought the shell months ago, and it was full of dog hairs, so i decided to take the carpet out, and it was summer, so i didnt wanna work on the sdeadening in that heat, and it was dragging on til now.
will clean it up when i go back home next.

as for the techo, i dont revv til 11000rpm, i wanted a rev gauge because i always ovr revv the engine when the turbo kicks in, and i want to keep my eyes on the road, i wanted that guage for shift light really, and my mate was selling it, so i said y not.

will show picture once i touch up the car a bit more.

:)

Decent platform to start with. I'd try bargain them down the price of the clutch though considering it'll need rego soon.

Yeah, Its a truck booth jdmek. I should post the pic from outside the booth. It looks ridiculous with a little car in it lol

Also picked these up. Delivered cheaper than I could pick up a set of std corner lamps locally lol. I really wanted the reflected part orange because I did a blinker delete but these will do. Will be getting orange LED globes because the globes supplied are quite frankly shit lol
