Could be the Transmission bearings, i know my Del Sol used to sound abit similar to yours. Ended up being the Counter shaft bearing.
From what i understand (which is really little) if it was the engine block it self wouldn't there be alot of smoke ???

Bit hard to tell from that recording. Alloy engines are hard to pinpoint where noises are coming from. I've recently replaced the water pump on my D16A8 and timing belt tensioner pulley because I realised the noise was coming from that end of the engine (made the whole thing sound like a bucket of bolts rattling around inside). Water pump bearing in particular was as rough as guts, wonder it hadn't siezed or shattered.

Could be one of these,

1) Hamonic Balancer
2) Valve tappet noises - may just need adjustments
3) Belt Tensioner pulley bearings
4) if your not getting any overheating / cooling issues then its not your water pump.
5) Bearing Pulleys from your P/S or AC
6) Input shaft spiggot bearings / Main bearings on your GB
7) Exhaust manifold leak
8) Exhaust pipe leak
9) Inspect your Belts if loose - adjust or lubricate.
Hard to tell from the recording but i'd start from the bottom of the list to top.

are there any CEL codes or loss of power?

Hard to shift into gears etc?

When u turn on your AC is the noise still there or dissapears?

when you turn left or right - do you hear the noise?

hope you sort it out man.

it sounds normal to me, as long as you dont hear loud tapping noise coming from the engine, if you do thats when you should be worried

thanks for the input guys. had the car looked at by my mechanic today, everything was fine. he told me i was being paranoid. also compared it to 2 other d16s. they sound very similar. he told
me the car runs immaculate, which was good to hear :D
