Yeah too true. Too many people told me bad stories of 'settling' and regretting so I took their advice and it paid off.

Hi all, I think I've come to the conclusion that a clean s2k within my budget is hard to come by. Therefore im looking at Alternative vehicles such as the gen2 mazda 3 mps.

Is this a good decision?

I'd keep at it. Honestly, a few bargains come up at times you just have to be quick to snap them up. If you have the opportunity to buy one and your heart is set on one I wouldn't just opt out for the next best option. How Long have you been looking for?

With my budget is ep3, mps, dc2/5r = 17-18k~

Been on and off with the s2k hunt for the last year. There's always a doubt that some bastards Gona poke holes in my roof or that my basketball training gear wouldn't fit in the boot.

Seems I was very lucky with mine then.... Bought one within a couple weeks of seriously looking at adds and it was the first one I looked at... And the only one in act.

To comments on other cars for 25k that are similar... They don't really exist.

Z3 gutless and not very good handling.
z4. Only ones I found that I'd even consider buying were more like 30k, handling issues

Mx5. Biggest contender, beats handling, down on power, lacks a bit of class comparatively, far more common.

boxter... again not many s's for 25... More like 30. Non s version slow. And expensive as all hell to maintain/insure.

S2k is really it for the mid 20's roadster

acceleration times of non S boxster very close to s2k plus more useable torque, let alone s version which trumps it all round

z3 is known as one of the best handle roadsters of all time along with mx5s as well as in 6yl form faster than s2k in accel.

z4 to me look like shit but objectively they are on option for roadster

Have you seen the bills an aged Boxster around the age of the AP1 is like?

You can buy a AP2 by the time you do some of the major work needed by that age...

There is a price to pay for that badge...

Wouldn't go with the 3 MPS... Cronically boring =| [Personally]'

I would preserve with finding that S2000, might have to either take a notch or 2 down in expectation, fix it up and enjoy OR pay the premium for the good ones when they appear.

spot on. I looked at a boxter at a dealership and saw the service reports. it had to have engine mounts replaced and that was like 8k bill.. so I said fk that!.. was also going to get a z4, had the bank cheque ready but then decided last minute I didnt want it. it had 2 broken cup holders and it was $600 each to replace.

luckily a mate had a s2000 for sale which i knew was well taken care of and I ended up getting a s2000, which I sold this year and now have a ep3 and damn I love the car :) absolutely love the fuel efficiency and now I drive it everyday to work.

my wife had a bmw 120i and it was nothing but problems and hefty repair bills.

I would only go European if it was under warranty only. I bought a new Audi a4 earlier this year and the damn thing has oil consumption issues already so have to get pistons replaced. luckily under warranty.

I've had 3 Honda's and have not had one mechanical problem. had 2 European cars and both had oil consumption issues.

There an ep3r in qld for 16k. Is that worth it?
Like there's so much limitations being a student with a budget. I can't really fly over to a state or fork money to get the car sussed out, it's just to expensive to justify.

Ep3 are pretty rare in Adelaide. I think there's only 2 that I've seen

Basic servicing I know if you DIY you can avoid the general servicing cost but I'm talking about the more major servicing etc. Even parts alone is scary... I tried to help a friend find cheap stock parts for her Boxster... That went well...

Hahaha, I've been out of Hondas for... about 6yrs so far so I'm well aware of cars outside of Hondas thx ;) In fact enjoyed spanking them =P

you could pick up an ep3 for about 16-18k easily, some are modded with some good parts as well so u could save some money buying one with mods if u wanted to mod in future. I'm referring to Sydney market. haven't looked into Adelaide

Hahaha, had a nice talk with an Audi mechanic who was a customer at the shop, given I think 1L of engine oil as a courtesy? But really to account for the known engine oil consumption. Isn't that nice to know for a new car.

Protip: Buy the Audi platform shared VWs, they receive the previous gen Audi platforms with all the refinements and corrections made, basically close to perfected ;)

Ah, rephase...

Basically... The 'new' VWs use perfected older Audi platforms [chassis, powerplant, drivetrain, etc] =) Think A series as being the basis for the Golf, Jetta & IIRC he said Passat. So buy the VWs as they're less likely to have big issues =)

I have an E39 BMW daily - cheaper to run than S2K parts wise cause I get all my stuff from eBay UK...

And I looked at a 986 Boxster S before looking at my S2k - had my mech go around it and found starter motor dying plus needed 1 replacement cat. In the end I didn't buy it cause the price wasn't right (30k) but I seriously regret buying the S2K and wish I had bought the boxster instead. Oh well. There'll be time for other cars in the future

Car was originally sold at the start of the year in VIC for $30K with 70K kms

Now the seller wants to sell it for the same price he bought it for but with 30K more kms

Seller also claims it to be an AP2 V1 but it has AP1 interior (Center console, cluster, door cards, etc) and AP2 V2 seats (I know some of the earlier jap spec AP2's came like this but still abit sus)

Yes true but seemingly not with S2000s. Likely due to P plate laws over east.

The car is in top notch condition (got it checked out by my mate, who is a mechanic). Now the car has finance on it and I have read up the guideline to buy an encummbed vehicle so I wont be giving him the money directly, but rather 2 cheques one to the bank and one to him for the difference.

Anything else I should look out for?

Also the car has the plate "Koufala", anyone deal with this guy before?

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/honda-s2000-1999-13492379?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=4&eapi=2&__N=12 46%201252%201247%201282%204294965322%204294964924% 20900%201216&num=15&silo=Stock&sort=default

Thanks,

I live in new farm. Haven't seen it about in past 3yrs, just a stock blue one. Can sus it out one day if u want?

lol find it funny that i've *never* seen it considering he lives within 2km to me...my sisters have though (reason i know where he lives).
to be honest, i like it. the condition from the pictures looks imaculate, the price reflects the kms and the colour (as funny as that may sound).
people will disagree with me, but i think it's fairly priced. if you are able to take more than a few grand off it you're getting a bargain :).

oh and as i said in another thread:

"should be quoted at the top of these forums as a guide to checking out cars.
Step 1 - go see the car
Step 2 - inspect the car, look for anything that looks wrong. you don't need to be a mechanic or panel beater for this, i'm not and inspected 5 s2000's i wasn't happy with.
Step 3 - drive the car, see if anything feels wrong
Step 4 (or step 1 if they are free, i'm not sure if they are any more) - do the vin checks and all that make sure it's not a write-off
Step 5 - ask about it on the forums and take it to a professional to have it looked at."

thanks for the quick reply. Same, I live around the area and have never seen it once.
He does have a daily euro though and did mention he hardly drives it.
I did take a look at the car today. There were a couple of scratches, one on the door and another on the front bumper but nothing major.
The seats are a little worn but I guess that's expected. Did a compression test, all around 225 so seems fine there.
Also took a quick drive, everything seems good.
I do believe it to be a bit overpriced however and that's the only thing holding me back at the moment.

i've got a thing with s2000 seats. i hate them. in every way. mine has done extremely low ks, and over the last 5k km of me using it i have watched the seats deteriorate at a ridiculous pace. if you see an ap1 with perfect seats, they have been retrimmed or replaced.

as far as it being overpriced, that's a fair call. keep in mind though that white s2000's are rare as f*ck. seems like you are going about the purchase the right way, work out your own budget and go from there. personally i love black s2000's, so consider whether it's wise to pay more for white when black/yellow/blue/silver/whatever-colour-you-like looks good too...

oh, and just a bit of trivia. a member on these forums sold his white s2k with 180k kms on it for 21 grand or so (23 from memory but honestly can't remember) in 1 week. the reason it took him a week was because i had him hold it for me before changing my mind. the guy who bought it put it back up straight away for 31 grand lol. don't know if it sold or not, but it's not up any more...

black8thgen

Yeah i remember that white one lol.. was pretty cleanly modded too. I've never seen the car around anymore but maybe cos I'm not out and about as much as before now.

That white one above looks like a decent car but a little overpriced. Keep in mind - i picked up an 03 ap1 (updated bits n pieces) in black with tan interior 68000km on the clock and the only negatives were stone chips and scratches on the front bumper. Had some basic mods on it as well. Seller was asking 29 i got it down to 27 and to this day i still feel like it was a good buy. If you can get that price down a couple grand or so and with the white honda tax in mind... could be decent buy!

the one you are looking at is more valuable than this one, and I would be willing to bet in better condition. and this one isn't nego on price at all.

Picked up for 26.5.. Kinda pricey but I was willing to pay the white Honda tax and for an unmolested one.
It does need new tyres to get rwc done. Can anyone recommend some cheapish tyres that will last for a while until
I get new rims? He just has stock rims on

Well with sellers like that, i usually ask them to drive around instead and hear for common problems of the s2k, And you can feel what the drivers is feeling as well soo any shudder or something wrong you be able to spot them too. If they deny that too ill stay away from the car. I watched the previous owner of my car let 3 different people test the car within 1hour and all of us rushed to the bank but luckily i had my ways

pure_na

yeh that works. thing is i wouldn't mind allowing a test drive, but you would have to show me money. i'm not asking for a deposit (which is what a lot of people do), i'm just asking for evidence that after you are 100% happy with my car, you will buy it. end of the day, if i had it up for 25, 30, 35, 40 whatever, you either have the money or you don't.

for the record, i went to see 5 cars in a week, and even when OFFERED to drive them, i declined, as i only wanted to test drive if i was 100% happy with everything else, and the only thing stopping me from purchase was to test the car myself. only 1 matched that criteria, so i returned to see it rather than testing it first time. felt bad though because i had it looked at and it wasn't what i thought so i didn't buy it.

Previous owner killed the diff/axles/cv joints (one of them, can't remember) by having 20" chromies that were too heavy for the car, which he replaced/fixed.

I would assume the noises are from them being replaced/fixed poorly, etc.

Well i was in different budget and took every chance to test drive one. I had my friends one as a benchmark and just tested if the owner allowed. I wasnt allowed to be picky and the only criteria i had is straight chasis and fine engine i was lucky to find one that drove like my friends one with 80k kms despite having almost double km

s2000 side fender badge is in the complete wrong place - means it's been replaced at some time (possibly due to a hit?)

That's all i can tell from a 30second look while at work

ALPS
23-01-2013, 08:21 AM
front badge is black, and like black8thgen said, the side fender badges are in the wrong place as well, colour looks a bit off, alignment doesnt look hundred percent where the bumper meets the fenders and bonnet,, guaranteed has had some sort of playing around with at the front, whether it be badges ripped off for looks and put back on or an actual accident..

and i love how they say 'no accident history', just cos it's not on paper.

just know that when something seems too cheap to be real. it is too cheap to be real.. but hey, on the other side, if it's been repaired good, there's no damage behind the guards and bumper and no structural damage existant, good deal. but i dont want a car knowing it's been played with, plus lowered and no mention of driveshafts been replaced, guaranteed the cv joints are on their way as well.

lol i love the name of the seller

^ I agree with the above however,

As far as i can tell, a decent s2000 will go for around 21. When i say decent, i mean there's a good chance you are getting a fairly good condition car - at 21, it's certainly no guarantee.
Now hypothetically, if i bought that car for 16, the 5k price difference would allow me to make certain parts completely bulletproof. as long as the engine was fine, i'm pretty sure i would be covered to make other known expensive parts unbreakable - which i would do straight away regardless of whether they were fine or not.

This is definately not the path i took lol, but something i considered.

I do believe that at 16k, you're going to need a pretty large buffer to cover you for any problems that may arise.

LOL! all i know is it has been for sale for a very long time, i remember checking it out on rta. its an 04 model not 05. it looks ugly. an AP2 at that price wouldn't be for sale for sooo long if it was neat. He'd have an alot better chance selling if he restored it to stock

If someone wants to pay the price of a stock s2000 that can be arranged.

I guess if you're comparing it to stock 99 model s2000s its a bit exxy. But it's just like guys selling modded eg's/ek's for sub 20k...is not for everyone but for the right person...they don't mind

The rule of thumb I ascribe to is for every dollar you spend modding your car, take a dollar off the asking price.

My car is so modified I'd have to save up to sell it.

Yeah I agree, I purchased an ep3 last year and spent over 7k on mods and if I were to sell it I'd doubt I'd even get back the price I bought it for but I guess an s2k may be different as it may be harder to find one in decent condition.

lol i like what jooboo has done - he's offering to nego on price if he removes mods. sends every 'modded cars are worth nothing' argument out the window. i would do the same if i sold mine, as i have every stock part. you get the car as it is for x amount, or stock for less. difference is jooboo is nicely offering to nego by removing parts, whereas i would offer it whole or stock, no in between, no nego on my prices :P.

sends every 'modded cars are worth nothing' argument out the window.

Ahh, but that wasn't my argument. Mine is that a stock car is worth more than a modded car.

And I will happily admit I am wrong. Someone just has to pay a premium for Jooboo's car. Shall I start baking that humble pie?

pure_na
21-02-2013, 06:26 PM

It was a great car when I had it as I bought it off a friend who owned it for 7 years prior to me.. No mechanical problems what so ever.. only thing that needed attention was the roof being replaced which looks like it has by the lady that bought it off me.

Seems like it's only travelled 4,000 km's in the last year though cause i sold it at about 112,000... i regularly got it serviced at hanny's so it should come with log books.. if you guys are interested check it out.. the km's may be legit cause she works in the city, so she doesn't drive to work so it's probably just a weekend car..

I had a look at it mate

This is the information I have found

Comments
She's a zippy little red convertible, sure to get attention (if that's what you're into) but more importantly she's an exceptionally well built machine and a pleasure to drive.
This cheeky roadster has been the pride and joy of her owner and has been cared for accordingly with regular servicing and maintenance. Her interior, exterior and all mechanical systems are in pristine condition and she's always been kept safely garaged. She has never been modified or abused (like many S2000s) she is completely stock... a natural beauty.

A very regretful sale but has to go due to the changing needs of the family.

Please email, phone or text to make time for a viewing.

Serious shoppers only please.

pull of the cover. replace gasket. put cover back on. if its from the screw where the maintenance hole is. maybe just re-tension it. i don't know if they need to be replaced with a new one if they've been removed before.

Seems to be from the maintenance screw, a lot of people on s2ki have the same problem lmao

What would people value a 99 S2K with 115km, FSH... zero mech $ to spend, previously lightly hail damaged (pics to prove), fully resprayed but a horrible job now needing another full proper respray. No accidents ever...

Thinking whether I keep it forever or let it go..

Ha if someone offered me 15k I'd probably sell.. Might even chuck it up here and see if any interest.. See what other people think first though..
