the price according to condition and km is average right?

Baby Face
16-11-2013, 04:20 PM
price is nothing spectacular.
but s2000 prices seem to not be as simple as it seems. can range from 16k-30k so this is almost in the middle, and in decent condition. if the coils are decent then its saved you some money, makes the deal a bit sweeter.
go there check the inside of the doors for scuff marks, around the key hole for scratches and make him an offer. i think 22k is a decent price. 24k if they are good coils already?
can only speculate though. how bad do you want one? demand increases the price when supply is low.

Just had a look at this one, it has bc coilovers and log books. But its not in immaculate condition, major scratches on rear bar looks to be reversed into something, 20 cent paint flake on rear bar, rear bar and fender gap is pretty weird, abs light is on. He said it was the rear passenger wheel and that the abs sensor is faulty $350 to fix. Don't be fooled by the pictures. Seats were pretty bad condition compared to others Ive seen with higher km's..

Didn't bother test driving it/check oils because just looking at it turned me off. But then again I'm picky.

If I was looking for an immaculate one I'd steer away.

Hello everyone,

First time poster, and also in the hunt. I love my MX-5 NB8A, but I think it's time for a little more power, an LSD and some rollover safety. Oh, and that beautiful thing that is the F20c.

Does anyone know anything about this one on carsales: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Honda-S2000-2003/SSE-AD-2043417/?Cr=4&sdmvc=1

Cheers in advance

Baby Face

the owner painted the OEM wheels black, might be other signs of corner cutting, go check it out. And ask us any other questions you may have.

how do you compare the S2k against the MX5? in rigidity etc.

Duke_Leto
20-11-2013, 11:04 PM
I noticed the gloss black stock wheels, and also the black Honda badge. It's not too far, so I'll go look at it. Seems like a good price for an 03 model, however does have reasonably high km's. Clean looking interior from the one main photo.

I have only driven one s2000; it was the only dealer who had one available in QLD: http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Honda-S2000-1999/AGC-AD-14482124/?Cr=7&sdmvc=1

Good engine, clutch pedal could have used some adjusting. Roof was on its last legs, blue paint showed lots of scratches, front bar respray with some slight paint damage still visible on the passenger front guard where it met the bar. Someone has misjudged a few kerbs in its life, as it had some damage down on the passenger sills. I think all the clips in the boot were missing also. And seriously, what dealer tries to sell a car with a steering wheel that isn't aligned? Had fun anyway.

My MX-5 was made in 98 (as the 99 model) and only has 70K Km's on the clock. It's in pretty good condition. I have some basic mods: lightened flywheel and clutch, headers, exhaust and Koni sports suspension, nice set of BBS rims. And to put my thoughts into perspective, I only had 5-10 minutes driving the s2000 (on public roads, and it wasn't my car, so I was reasonably gentle). You certainly notice the extra weight of the s2000, however it does feel more planted and the chassis much more rigid. The MX-5 feels more nimble, but also twitches to every bump and crease in the road. Didn't expect the turning circle to be as large as it was on the s2000. Gearbox in the s2000 was very nice, lighter than the MX-5 but still with that positive engagement feel. Much more room in the s2000. I'm not really sure the s2000 needs the electric roof (weight?);I could probably put the MX-5's down quicker and it's all manual. Power and general perkiness of the engines can't really compare. And for a stock exhaust, it sounds very nice. I'm a big fan of NA cars, and having 9krpm to play with was awesome. Think it's going to take some practice not shifting too early. Don't really have the experience in the s2000 to go into any more depth.

The MX-5 is a great, cheap, fun and reliable little car. The s2000 is in a somewhat different league.

Baby Face
20-11-2013, 11:59 PM
i find it funny that the s2000 has more interior space, i cant even crack my back in mine.

the s2000 is noticably larger than the mx5, maybe the thought the roof might be too hard to reach for some, since the roof is a lil narrow and the car a lil wider. it doesnt make for much extra weight.
i think you could make the s2000 twitchy the ap1 v1 (99-01) has hard rear suspension and soft front (thinner sway bars + springs) which can make for a white knuckle ride that feels like it throws you into corners.
my02-03 is more refined stiffer front end, softer rear.
the facelift 04+ they went for a front which is stiffer than the rear and fixed up the rear bump steer issues by changing the tie rod geometry.
the later models are easier to drive fast as the front would let go before the rear generally, and you didnt have to be so anal about making sure the wait was settled when you throw it into corners.

just some things to take into account.

Duke_Leto
21-11-2013, 09:43 PM
I guess I'm somewhat use to driving something a bit more go-kart like. And certainly I wasn't highlighting twitchy (MX-5) as being a desirable trait. In fact, in the wet with the absence of an LSD it can be downright treacherous/dangerous or awesome, depending on your level of car control:)

I'm reasonably up on the various changes of the s2000 throughout the year models, but reading and driving are two different things. And the track is really the only safe place to truly push a car safely. Thanks for you input Baby Face (I'm guessing by your reputation that you aren't 12 and yet to shave lol).

Spoke to the owner of the black one listed above. Seemed like a pretty good guy, black wheels and badge are plastidip, so can remove if desired. I said that if I wanted to proceed after seeing the car this Sunday, I would be looking at an RACQ master check and a compression test (master check only does comparative compression test). Hope it turns out well and I will give my impressions on the vehicle after I look at it. Unless it's awesome and I don't want anyone else snatching it up, in which case I will say that it was broken. Everywhere.

Regards,

Jonathon

Thanks for the mental picture Jasemas.

Drifter: Don't have any information on the S2K listed, but it does look pretty nice. Looks like 17" rims (maybe even 18") and it does have a few AP2 bits on it (so not sure why the seller says everything is standard except a cold air intake). Wouldn't you list that it has the AP2 front bar, rear bar and tail lamps? Be nice if it had a few more pictures. Are you up for an interstate journey to see it? You could arrange an NRMA inspection before you bother to go down to see it. Or, hopefuly there's someone on the forum who's checked it out already.

That's a great looking vehicle! Love the GPW, red leather and black rims. Wonder what the ride quality and handling is like with the 18" rims though.

I would say as long as the vehicle is checked out properly and thoroughly, the kilometers wouldn't be much of an issue. Has it been maintained properly, what's its compression readings are the important questions.

Hey everyone , it has no come time to unfortunately sell my pride and joy . I have owned this remarkable car for 2years now and has been my pride and joy to drive and own .
The car is a Honda s2000 , silver in color with red leather interior , the car has traveled low 95000kms in its lifetime .
Since ownership I have meticulously serviced the car and continued to tastlyfully upgrade it with aftermarket parts and accessories .
The following is a few things I have done since my ownership .
*fully adjustable buddy club coilovers ( suited for street use )
*cusco adjustable strut brace
*full sound system which includes , JBL speakers , 2 JL audio Amps , a JL subwoofer , JVC headache( aux , mp3 etc ) all professionally installed .
* OEM front lip
* rare spoon intake with K&N induction filter
* beak tie bar .
*exedy aftermarket sports clutch ( 2000km ) old
the car has also undergone the following maintenance service, including
shockproof gearbox oil , brake and clutch fluids and diff fluids have also been replaced recently .
all new bushes includes
*brand new gearbox mount
*brand new engine mounts
brand new control arm bushes
* brand new slotted & drilled rotors
* recently completed its major 100k service with all new belts , spark plugs , oils etc
Alot of time and effort has been put in with this car and will be sad to see her go.
This car has been my weekend car , and will be perfectly suited for someone to enjoy the wonderful summer days driving in a convertible . the car is P plater friendly .
The car is ready to be driven with all work already done , just turn the key and enjoy .
The car has to be seen to be appreciated , possibly one of the cleanest and straightest s2000’s in Australia . In no rush to sell , first to see will buy .
Please no time wasters or joy riders , im in no rush to sell so please no silly offers . I am slightly negotiable within reason the car has also comes with a full years rego

The orange one is a bit of a mystery, could be a (rare) imola orange model that has been a private personal import. The absence of headlight washers on the bumper fits this theory.

Or... a punter has resprayed their car and shaved the bumper.

The former would command a price premium and the latter would devalue imho.

The paint code near the vin would yield a quick answer.

Ten Four

I'm going to guess import... Engine bay is also orange and it has a coin slot where the headlight washers would be - easily changed but just signs...

Baby Face
10-01-2014, 11:07 PM
its summer anyway, typically best time to keep your S, although its also the best time to sell. in winter they apparantly sell less (like bikes).

generally in WA i prefer the S in winter, since when the sun is out its overcast and not too sunny, much cooler.
though summer nights are so good coolish air, and the starry sky. so many advantages of a convertible.

you guys gotta buy one quick.

Me too. I'm firmly in the camp that convertibles are for winter.
Cold? Ok, heater and possibly a jumper.
Hot? Ok, get burnt, sweat from heat / humidity and be gross, turn AC on and lose power / responsiveness.

need new tyres before then curtis, shit i cant keep the rear end straight in the rain with the standard rims and 225 tyres on the rear then when u hit a bump and the rear end jolts as they do because the rear is stiffer then the front u cant help but loose grip.

i remember, before my incident, driving on a freeway overpass and the drainage/expansion gaps along the bridge kept throwing the rear up and each time it came down it fish tailed for a bit, there was like 3 on the bridge it made for a thrilling experience.

OK guys lets go off topic.

the Ap1 floaty feeling i get is when u break near the last moment before a turn (or in a turn, if u pussy out) then the weight shifts to the front since the front springs on the ap1 are softer then the rear by a lot! (02-04 models are slightly stiffer fronts but still softer than the rear).
so when u brake there is no weight on the back and it feels like flicking out.

so the answer is to keep power on so that the backwheels are keeping up (not dragging the gearbox/engine), we dont have these problems in FWD cars since the rear end just follows, but in the s2000 the backwheels can start doing the braking if ur foot is off the accelerator mid turn, it leads to lift off over steer (a very easy to achieve lift off oversteer). less experienced ppl will keep the car in a higher gear so the engine braking to the rear wheels is less, if ur good you can keep it in a lower gear and be ready to catch the power oversteer. your basically stuffed either way it wants to kick out at the limit.

I had to 'keep the power on' in the lude in order to avoid oversteering as well

just gotta not let that weight transfer happen

Don't know the seller or car from a bar of soap, but do you really not discern a difference between a 'respray' and 'bumper has been resprayed'?

Respray infers the whole car has been resprayed, often in a different colour. Signs would be that the inside of the engine bay was still the original colour (unless it was a really expensive job).

Bumper resprayed means he had a parking accident and they had to respray the bumper.

World of difference.

I rkn its a good price, but why would you ask after your bought the car and not before... even if we tell you, it wouldnt really change the fact that you bought it already

If it's in good knick it's a good buy. It it's not then it's probably worth what you paid. And if it's shitful then you paid too much.

haha I saw a blue s2000 couple hours ago from nsw pulling out of maccas on ballarat to take it for a spin, the guy crunched his second gear and when he came back to park he rode the clutch soooo bad. must be very new to manual.

a lot of AP1s have trouble with 2nd gear if the GB isnt warm and if the driver is not good with the clutch in.
take down the number plate if u see it again so we can warn other potential buyers

I seemed to have forgot the plate but from what I could remember the plate was nsw and blue, I think I remember seeing something like dan with numbers possibly 0. I know I've seen it up for sale not long ago not sure if that's the right one

Agreed, it takes a while for the S2000 gb to warm up going through all the gears, it certainly takes a lot of driver effort to drive it properly.

Not really, had two a 99 and 01. 99 crunched 1st to 2nd when it felt like it, warm or not (under heavy load only). Other one didn't.

I find mine (03) crunches 1st > 2nd when cold as well sometimes. Noticed an improvement, though not totally cured, after changing fluids last service.

i was going to link that TSB.
but i have a 00 and it has the 2nd gear crunch when im not expecting it and am not fully conscious of what my clutch foot is doing in regards to how activated the clutch is.
but generally it does not happen when i have been using the other gears and been on the road mroe than 10mins, if the car is idling though and all things look good ie engine temp, i will still experience the crunch because im not expecting it and the GB is actually cool still.
all this is basically only at high RPMs though and u want to be Doridori and do quick shift then it rejects. so let it warm up all you s2gays.

I found in dadars car first time I drove on cruise with him that his rejected 2nd even when warm, but I think I was letting out the clutch too quick...

Searched for a solid 3 months for mine. Inspected 5 which passed internet viewing test. All 5 were horrible when inspected in person. Eventually I kind of stopped looking and came across one by accident.
Completely stock 01 model with 66xxx kms on it. Now owned it for 3 months

Me Torell?

Well if my compression is up to shit, that means as the owner (I) would give myself three options:

Rebuild/Replace the motor (to please picky buyers)

Or

Hold onto the car (because fark it when this motor goes I'll replace with a K24)

Or

Consider some seriously good offers (because it's only an S2000 and I have seen motor and box sell on eBay with decent K's for ~$3500+)

He mentioned a change to rear bumper as it was backed into a pole, and a repaint of front bumper as some things fell of a truck and scratched it.

Edit: Just asked him about it and he said the previous owner serviced it there because he was the owner of the workshop.

it didnt have 04 interior.
the s2000 doesnt have much of an interior, so the only thing that could be there is the ap2 double cup holder which it doesnt have.

not sure about the AP2 diff and GB but if it has one it will be smoother, as long as its smooth and works shouldnt be a problem. hardly a good first car though.
