After driving, your brake rotors begin to cool down. Problem is the whole rotor doesn't cool at the same time, as the bit of the rotor under the pads keep their heat longer (like a blanket). This causes rotors to warp.

What do people do to stop this?

After a hard drive, go soft for a while before you stop to let the rotors cool down properly. But if you gotta stop with hot rotors then don't leave the brakes on, stop the car and release the brakes.

whatever you do - after heavy or prolonged braking session DO NOT rest on the brakes (at say a traffic light or on a hill etc) !!!

That only applies if you have 4-wheel discs though.

I've never had a warped disc. And I've almost melted my pads out of the calipers a couple of times. I'll have to pay more attention now that I've got 4 discs.
