View Full Version : what amp to power 2x12"?
Hey guys my mate just bought 2 x 12" Kicker subs (the box from JB-HIFI, rrp $500). We tested it out at JB and its pretty strong. Now, he didn't buy an amp from JB cause their worth wayyyyy to much there and like on ebay you can get the same ones for half the price. Now, there were two amps at JB that the guy told us would run the two subs perfectly, I managed to find them on ebay, however I don't really know what's the best amp to use as I dont understand the whole monoblock, 4x50w rms etc, I'm a simple guy lol
The two amps i found are as follows:
Audiobahn Amp (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AUDIOBAHN-A8000T-800-x-1-Ch-car-Amp-Amplifier-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ5820230598QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1QQcmdZ ViewItem#ebayphotohosting)
Clarion Amp (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Clarion-APA4320-4-3-2-CHANNEL-AMPLIFIER_W0QQitemZ5818261911QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1 QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting)
Otherwise could someone point out a better amp but most likely along the price range of around $500 max --> thats kinda why I went on ebay cause its cheap!
Thanks guys - I'm learning too from this so I wont have to post such bullshit questions.

the clarion is for speakers dude it would run ur subs properly, the audiobahn isnt too bad if its 800RMS but i doubt it is i think its less in RMS, on ebay they're con artists and put the max rating not the RMS.
u'll have to tell us what the power handling of ur subs are, but generally speaking this is a good amp:

u can get it for around 500.

monoblock amps are designed to run subs and subs only...in terms of value for money yeh check out the alpine range i hear good things from there monoblock amps as my mate has two 12 inch alpines running off the mono amp..not to sure which it is but think it is about 600 watts so it owuld power your subs nicely

monoblock amps are designed to run subs and subs only...Yes they are. IMO, the best amp that would run the two 05C12 subs would be the Kicker Monoblock 04KX600.1, it retails at $879 at JB, expensive but you'll get the best performance out of them. :)

damn ur subs are onli 150wrms??? hahah just get something around 300wrms u don have to spend more than $250 on a good amp for those subs to get the best performance.

The 2 x Kicker 12inch subs in a box should be 300wrms each sub.

in dat case definitely go for tha schneider i mentioned, its 850WRMS at 2ohms and 1350 at 1ohm!!! u can get it for around $500 and i guarantee u will find nothing better for under $1000
good luk :)
yeah their 350rms but they go hard (unsure the max)! They went better than a 15" sub that was there (forgot the brand, but it was like gold and it looked very bling). Ok so thanks heaps for clearing up what monoblock means, as my mate already has his speakers rigged up to another amp. J Mun, yeah that was the best amp sugested to get but thats way out of my mates price range.
So does anyone know where we can pick up this schiender amp in Sydney around the $500 mark? I've heard good things about schienders so we'll go with that.
Cheers guys, been very helpful!

first of all, face ur subs to tha back, second of all na im not sure how much u get that amp for, depends on ur bargaining skills, personally i think I can get it for no more than $600 but even at that price that amp is a bargain you will be able to run anything off it in da future too :)
ps are u sure ur subs are 300rms each? it says on da kicker website they're 150wrms
well lol ok, I'm pretty sure their 300rms each, or could be together? All I know is that they go very hard! Anyways and I put the subs facing inward cause when they were facing backward they shook the shit out of the back like real badly, and when I faced them forward it semt better, is there a reason to why people face them outward?

in my car the bass sounds alot better when i face it towards the bak, but i got a hatchback, and im pretty sure ur subs are 150WRMS each so if u get that schneider amp it'll fry ur subs,
this is another good amp for both ur subs, u can try running it at 2ohms as well, u cna pick it up for $249 or the same amp but monoblock is $300

lol srs? 150rms seems nothing and these went pretty crazy! Would this amp power the subs well you reckon? Cause I'm willing to save up to buy a decent amp for like $500 that'll power the subs.

well go on the kicker website www.kicker.com it says they're 150rms, its not just about the power its also about efficiency, search on the net and see what the power rating is in rms (which im sure is 150) if it is 150 then u can get a amp that has the perfect power for them for around $300,
this amp provides perfect power for them and run them at optimal levels but maybe if u look around u cna find something cheaper and a monoblock maybe.

hmm well, my pioneer amp is 600w max specs (http://www.jemproelectronics.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1201) and costed me $400 and that thing can't even power the sub. It usually cuts out when I put the level meter over 20. I'll probably get a new amp for the sub and use the pioneer amp to power my 6x9's and front speakers. Or...this is what my friends recommended, is that I get ride of the 6x9's and replace them with splits which I hook up to the amp as well as get splits in the front doors as I have 6" speakers there. I'm trying to get the best sound out of my cheap setup.

and im pretty sure ur subs are 150WRMS each so if u get that schneider amp it'll fry ur subs,
you could run those subs off a 3000rms amp and not fry them, just set the gains properly, feed the woofers clean power and be sensible with the volume and they'll be fine.
I'm currently running it off my pioneer 600w amp which like cannot take it - it keeps cutting out.
try setting your amp up properly, it probably cuts out cause you have the gains cranked up and are clipping the shit out of the signal from the headunit to the amp everytime you turn the volume up.
Rico........Do you know what load your woofers are wired for? will either be 2 ohm or 4 ohm.(should say on the terminal board where the speaker cables go into the box.)
Eiher way here is the amp you should look at.
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AA0428&CATID=&keywords=800wrms&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=
Without a doubt one of the best bang for buck amps on the market.
$400 for 820rms and even at 4 ohms still makes 400rms, which will be fine for those subs.(which are 300rms as a pair, so 150rms each)
No its not all blinged up, but it DOES make its claimed power outputs, is known to be reliable and being an amp that makes 820rms at 1 ohm, you should never need to upgrade again unless you start entering SPL comps and want to be super competitive.
SPL - Yeah my mates cranked up the gains so we'd get the most out of the sub, so if I lower it it shouldnt cut out I guess.
The woofers are 2ohm.
Nah bro not looking at entering comps, I'm not that serious...just want some good crisp bass when cruising to uni and back. Thanks heaps for the info, I'll look into that!

Yes, get rid of the 6x9s, forgetrear speakers all together, take the money you wouldve spent on 6x9s and put towards the splits in the front.
then use that pioneer amp to run your splits and buy the Jaycar amp for you subs.
how much were you planning to spend on front splits and 6x9s?
Well....around $300 I'd say, cause I've gone into strathfield and saw like pioneer splits for like $500 there and the same ones on ebay brand new for $200, however what's a good set of splits? I was looking at the infinity splits series on Ebay as I've heard alot of good things about them Link (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/INFINITY-KAPPA-60-7CS-6-5-2-WAY-COMPONENT-SYSTEM-2005_W0QQitemZ5820126501QQcategoryZ3292QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting) - I saw these going for like $800 in a car audio store not long ago. So should I get rid of the 6x9's altogether?

no doubt go for schneider splits they're crisp and cheap too, i agree with ichacha don use 6x9, i found (well maybe for my taste) that one set of splits isnt enough, so i got 2 on my system, they're around $160 a set and are really good:
http://www.schneideraudio.com.au/sc_product.php?cat=Products&proId=25
the amp ichacha mentioned is perfect for ur subs its got just abit more power to provide cleaner sound.

it totally depends on what your sub ohms are,
say if each of ur speakers are 2ohm then its best to get a monoblock capable of 1ohm, or a power 2 channel, and bridge it. (wiring it at 4ohms of course)
say if ur subs are 2ohm together, then a monoblock at 2ohms is good
when you say the woofers are 2ohm, not sure if u meant 2ohm each or the woofers together = 2ohm
well the box has one output and the output on the box says 2ohm, so I think its 2ohm for the two. Here's the specs from the website:
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/5946/specs9nx.jpg I might go ahead with the schieder splits, however MJ you mentioned having two pairs of splits so does mean 2 for the front and 2 for the back? I believe my pioneer amp would be sufficient to power both the front and rear speakers, while I have another amp powering the sub.

some people think 1 set compnenets at the front is anough, but i personally think 1 set at the front and 1 set at the bak is alot better i know this cause i used to have 1 set and now i got 2 its alot better.
u cna run both sets of components even off a 2ch amp but u just cant fade front and back, u'll have to run them in 2ohms, ask the guy at pulse car audio how to run 2 sets of splits off a 2ch amp in 2ohms stereo cause its too much writing for me on here...
and yeah ur pioneer amp can run both sets of components.
call pulse car audio on 9755 7744
for the front i recommend u get the 5 1/4" splits so ur windows can close:
http://www.schneideraudio.com.au/sc_product.php?cat=Products&proId=24
i got those from there for $140 after bargaining, if he says no tell him "call ur provider man im buying 2 sets i wont tell anyone u gave me for $140"
for the back u can use the same thing but if u want the 6" ones u gotta go Dsire4Sound and they sell for $180 so up to u but i'd go for the same thing at the back.
good luk dude, PM me if u need more help
Well, first of all thanks heaps for the info, in the 2 weeks I should be tweaking up the system. Second, my pioneer amp (which will be powering the front and back speakers) is 4 channels so 2 channels doesnt worry me. I guess I'll be buying 2 sets of component speakers, as my car is fairly large on the inside. I already have 6" speakers in the front and they fit perfectly as the stock speakers were 6" so I might stick 6" components in both the front and back. Where abouts is Dsire4Sound?
Thanks heaps man!

nw broda, Dsire4Sound is on elizabeth drive in liverpool 9600 7702,
u might have to buy spacers for the front if ur gonna get the 6" cause the magnet on these schneiders are huge, my window didnt go down thats why i threw the 6" at the bak and the 5 1/4" at the front.
