The car is a 2001 honda civic, and everynow and then, the oil/engine light (not sure which), comes on and the car will not go out of 1st gear. if i leave the engine off for awhile, it goes back to normal. This has happened a couple of times now.
What is wrong?
Cheers,
Brian

All fluids have been checked, oil levels checked, everything is full.

That's very strange, not sure how on earth a car could be stuck in 1st gear. Oil/Engine light has completely nothing to do with what gear you're either.
How is it stuck?

You may have low tranny fluid if you've got an autobox

I tried to give that a shot, but under the passenger kick panel all i could see was 2x connectors, and a seperate one with 2 wires, green/yellow, and the other black.
Am i looking i the right spot?

ok i gave up on the ecu test, and took it to honda, who just did it for me.
the computer said:
"TP sensor voltage low"
the guy said that it may just be loose wiring from the throttle positioning sensor, or the whole thing could be dodgy and whole throttle body may need changing, which was quoted @ $1250 inc labour.

$1250 F^&^, try finding a wrecking honda similar model to your one.
As for the gearbox issue, as many other said might be low oil or its goneski.

hey dude...the TPS just tells the engine ecu how much throttle ur giving it and also senses load on engine thats y ur engine light was on.it couldnt read ur throttle position..and it wouldnt get out of 1st gear cause its in limp mode(its just to get u to the nearest servo or telephone)once u turned it off and started it again the computer reset itself...and if ur tranny oil was low u'd feel it wen changing gears.im suggest cleaning TPS plug with electrical contact cleaner 2 remove moisture..if that doesnt work then u need a secondhand TPS.

the TPS is on the axis of the the throttle butterfly on the opposite side of the throttle pulley. the TPS plug is simply the plug that comes off the TPS and connects it to the wiring loom ...... dunno how much simpler to explain it
