View Full Version : Headgasket Fun
1. Car is blowing alot of smoke, not consuming oil, stock tune so cant be running rich. Car is loosing water though. Is this a result of a warped head, stuffed head Gasket?
2. If Head Gasket needs replacing, If the OEM 3Ply was replaced with Spoon 2Ply would the timing be out of wack, needing ADJ camgears to correct it, or could the correction be made with a timing light and adjusting the distributer.

it will loose water thru a worn headgasket , BUT soon enough tha twill become a warped head. Measure it up and see if its still straight or mill teh head
well that rate of loss is say, i lost the entire resoviour of water in 1 week (300kms)
Tends to be worse after a decent TAK.

1: What color smoke?
2: Drain the oil and see if there is any water.
3: Have a mechanic, or you, do a compression test and a leak down test.
4: If there are leaks from the head gasket pull the head, check for warping, and replace the head gasket. If the head needs milling (What we call decking.) then do it, also check the block. If you deck the head and the block is warped or has nicks/dents the gasket won't seal, rare but it happens, then you'll need to deck the block. Some shops have ways to do it in car.
5: The cams should be fine and so should the gears. The thickness isn't enough to make the tensioner not tighten the belt. You'll be fine with just about any thickness head gasket. Remember though it will change the compression ratio a little bit.
thanks boys :)
smoke is whiteish grey.

ouch
thats coolant or oil
sounds liek the head gaket, but make sure your not loosing coolant from the water pump.

As I said above do those test to make sure of the real problem.
i got my car booked in tommorow for compression and leak down test. will let you know results then
Compression and Leakdown test results.
Cylinder 1: 202psi, 11%
Cylinder 2: 195psi, 18%
Cylinder 3: 200psi, 9%
Cylinder 4: 198psi, 17%
Result is OK.
It appears that it is fine, and also it was found that my radiator is loosing water, so thats where my water has gone.
So now burning water is ruled out. Hmmm
also i havnt got excessive blow by so can rule out excessive oil combustion too.
So perhaps a Fuel Problem? But im running the stock ECU???
WAhhhhhhh :(

White/grey smoke can sometimes be unburnt fuel mist, it may be running way to rich or plugs may need changeing get a full tune up done if you do not know yourself and see if that fixes it. Could also be caused by week spark or bad leads.

Anything over 15% is bad. I see two cylinders that could use new rings. That's where your smoke is coming from bud. It's not too bad but in a few years it will need it.

Yeah agree'd with above. 10% is a good result, 15+% is the danger zone.
Compression test also will hide problems. My compression was ~180 across the board with 9.2:1 compression; however my headgasket was causing me to burn coolant at least 5 times the rate you were.
Start the car up with the radiator cap off... Can you see it bubbling? Can you see water dripping onto the ground?
Water cannot simply disappear. Let the car idle for hours if you need to; It'll either drip onto the ground, or burn, there are no other options.

if it was ur head gasket , shouldnt ur oil be choclatey.. under the oilcap. i think ur pistonrings are worn.. which might be casuing the smoke.

now if im correct... :p take off the radiator cap, start the car till its at normal opperating temp...
~ if your head gasket is ***ed then you should get bubbles comming thru the radiator.
also recheck every hose for leaks, could be as a simple leak.
might also be overheating thus blowing smoke. make sure your radiator fan is working - if its not it may have blowen a hose or something...
btw - Its also hard to distinguish if there is water in some oils~~
