Vehicle Speed sensor - it pretty much tells the ECU how fast the car is going

i don't think it reads RPM.

I thought that was done from the crank position sensor?

i can remember removing my VSS and i think my RPM needle still worked. Can't remember 100% tho.

Correct - RPM signal comes from the Tacho wire from the Dizzy box.

if the VSS is not connected the RPM will still be functional. :)

VSS is located on the g/box which sends a signal to the ECU / Speedo on the cluster. basically the wiring is like a Y splitter.

in regards to pics see attached. they come in different shapes and types.

Top left is from a non electronic VSS this is a cable driven.
Right is a 99 Integra VSS
Bottem left is a 99 civic VSS

Ive also included a small diagram of how it is wired up.

enjoy!
