View Full Version : what modifications would make this turbo fit?
so any pics of what u have done/got
how much u spent so far? still under ur target?

havent began putting it on civic yet, will defenitly take pics, defenitly under budget so far I have everything listed above for$1250 . Just getting all small bolts and hoses now and figuring out the best place to mount this side mount intercooler

RB20 turbo's are T3, I wouldn't use this turbo personally. Try and look for a T28 ball bearing.
RB20 turbos are T28's with T3 flanges. I use one with no problems

lol .. tight budget man .. t28 ball bearing will be out of reach for that guy :p

lol .. tight budget man .. t28 ball bearing will be out of reach for that guy :p
he just baught one lol arrives on Monday, im looking at T04E turbo now seems like a good little turbo for only 6PSI
rnbguy
31-05-2007, 04:51 PM
yep serpo is right, its due in on monday...
i rekon the t04E is a nice turbo from what ive read, for quick spool but i rekon itll run out of breath at about 5,500 :)
from this projects experience ive learn if your on a tite budget always go the t3 flange direction, heaps of supply and support online, but if u can afford to go custom, then the world of turbos is your oyster (however the spelling goes)...
im getting rid of the downpipe i ordered of the internet for a t3/t4 turbo as i dont think itll fit this rb20 turbo...
im assuming these turbo run t3 feed fittings. So since i ordered td04L fittings and lines already ill just have to replace the small fitting to the turbo feed
remember rb20 uses the flanges off a t3, the down pipe SHOULD fit. not 100% sure though, have u thought about mayb a rb25 turbo, haha thats a t3 with t3 flanges :D
rnbguy
31-05-2007, 06:06 PM
rb25 is tooooo big and laggy i wanna keep is small but not too small :)
ill try this abit then once it works, ill experiment with other setups :)
your rb20 did it have 5 or 6 bolts? because my downpipe is 5 bolts and i thought rb20 had 6
it is 6 but its still the same flange.... wouldnt be hard to modify it.
and a t3 isnt that lagg, my old t3 use to kicks in around 2500-3000 max. my rb20 turbo kicks in around 2000.
rnbguy
31-05-2007, 07:41 PM
man thats pretty good info, well fingers crossed till it gets here monday :)
rnbguy
31-05-2007, 09:43 PM
for some reason it doesnt look like a t28 to me, but nething would do, as long as it fits what i have
heres a pic:

will be able to hide that no problems!

31-05-2007, 10:33 PM
sold TD04L friend needed it more then i did for his setup, and it was becomming so much of a headache trying to get all parts to fit together for it, bcuz it was so custom, i hope this turbo i ordered is a t28 or t25... its off a rb20 , if not itll do for now :P
haha that turbo looks familar :D
notice i run an external wastegate on mine ;) still same turbo dude

im just wondering bcuz in pic it looks like theres a hole in exhaust there... lol dont know wtf thats all about..
rnbguy
31-05-2007, 10:47 PM
dood ur running such a similar setup i love it man :)
dude dont u listen what i right....
ITS A T28!!!! just with t3 flanges. so yeah its a t28 not t25. btw if u want info on how i hooked mine up just ask. all i can say is dam it kicks in quicker then my old t3
also its a good base mate, it is piss easy for me to go now and buy a rb25 turbo which is a t3 and it will bolt into the EXACT position of this one without ANY modifications to down pipes ect. thats whats so great about it having t3 flanges and identical flanges to the rb25 turbo
rnbguy
31-05-2007, 10:51 PM
exactly, t3 flanges ive learnt is the way to go, thanx for the heads up, ill pm u when my head is under the bonnet wonder where the f*nk certain things go :P
dood ur running such a similar setup i love it man :)
similar setups? ha urs has cost like 1500 while im staring at around 8000, out set ups are ALOT different mate, and will perform ALOT different. the turbo dont make the set up mate, alot of other things come into play. but like i said if u want more infor/ pics on how my turbo is connected and on my down pipe ect.... just ask im willing to give u AS MUCH info on it as u need
rnbguy
31-05-2007, 10:57 PM
thanx dood ill let u know, lol didnt mean to upset u bout ur turbo setup champ :)
soon ill upgrade parts with time, for now i wanna learn to get this together on a base setup then work my way up with time... id love to just install aturbo and see the car run first then maybe soon itll be like ur setup AZA :P
thanx again for helping ill keep in touch
or u could go full sick and go all out :D mine is still fairly basic to some setups out there :o

heres the difference between my turbos flange:
http://www.mr2supercharger.com/4AGTE_files/turbo.jpg
and the downpipes flange:
http://all.dejonpowerhouse.com/edit/A-01_PTurbine_Hsg_5bolt.jpg
gonna have a look see at how much it is to fit this baby on to that downpipe or my other option of selling downpipe
i see what u mean now, the difference between my 5 bolt turbo t3 and my rb20 6 bolt was different. that down pipe will have to be modded abit to suit... if u were up in brissy my bro could make one up for u to. mine is completely custom made

hey im about to wire up my S ITC and just need to know if these will work:
http://ca.dsm.org/Tech/S-ITC-p.34-35.pdf
(diagram B on the right)
I know most likely know one here will be able to answer this because the apexi ITC is a rare machine...
the confusing thing is why there are only 4 wires connected to the apexi S ITC
040501912
05-06-2007, 03:21 PM
COZ every car has different timing set up. so u will see un used wires on ur ecu compare to other ecu.
rnbguy
05-06-2007, 03:23 PM
thats fair enough but to me just wiring 4 wires doesnt sound like itll be enough for the SITC to control timming? i could defenitly be wrong but for example how will it know the cam shaft position etc? all through the TDC connection?
040501912
05-06-2007, 03:36 PM
it should be enough mate. if the wiring are shown only 4.
on emanage timing are controlled by 2 wires :p so dont worry so much.
about the tdc im not quiet sure what are you asking:(
rnbguy
07-06-2007, 12:34 PM
which two wires on the cpu did u use on emanage? im reading to use the TDC wire.

09-06-2007, 02:49 PM
does it hit? LOL .. unlucky kit hey :p
rnbguy
09-06-2007, 03:19 PM
i havent personally tried it but guy from liverpool exhaust says these manifolds usually hit... i might try it in a day or two when i have time ill just remove the stock manifold and try hold this in position see if it works or not\
i might be able to rotate the turbo and move the a/c fan to the other side of the bumper (reversing the wiring on fan to reverse fan blow direction)
rnbguy
12-06-2007, 10:32 AM
screw it , i just ordered the ebay cast iron ones which allow a/c and ps , gonna sell my other manifold on ebay or something

hey is it a dumb idea to wire a/c fan to turn on when ac is on and when engine fan comes on, to speed up cooling? it sounds heaps dumb but im bored of my **** waiting for parts to arrive lol

I could be wrong, but the a/c system does not use engine coolant in any way, like the heating system does, ie using it or not wont affect coolant temps.
However engine coolant is passed through the heater core, so having the heater on and up high will help reduce the coolant temps, the downside being that summers here are hot enough without the heater on.
put a fully sik honda badge on it , problem solved.
hahha.
You could always mount it under the charge piping and paint it black so its less visiable, or better yet behind the bumper near the intercooler somwhere.
there is not much u can do about the bov, if u r fused about it mount it low on the piping in the bay and make it a colour that doesnt stand out. as for me mine metalic blue and stand out if they ask me i will just tell them to find me a honda bov to put on..... and see what they say lol
serpo
12-06-2007, 08:40 PM
what you do if they go "oi you got a BOV" be like ....SLAP!!! then you buy me a new turbo when it ****s up due to back presure
If you dont wanna be hastled by the cops get a plumb back blow off valve, i dont believe there illegal. build up a simple cheap air box from sheet aluminium around your filter, and plumb the bov into it. Cost you no more than $20-30 extra.

ive heard of this what does plumb back meen exactly? sorry im n00b at this
Youll notice some bovs have a tubular output like so - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/FLYING-TURBO-PLUMB-BACK-BLOW-OFF-VALVE-BOOST-DUMP-BOV_W0QQitemZ110137721208QQihZ001QQcategoryZ72478Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
it allows you to connect a hose to the bovs output and route it in a way that it dumps the released air back into the airbox before the filter. I believe most if not all factory systems work in this way to reduce noise:thumbsup:

ahhh ok I get it now nah I wana open cut air box so it will flutter like crazy lol
If you want flutter you don't need a bov. During throttle off the pressurised air is released through the compressor wheel fins causing the flutter.

^^ agree, FLutter means ur blowies are damage or not working, the air cant come out to the blowie, means air will be pushed back to the turbo.
this is not a good state, in long run might damage ur turbo :)

rnbguy
20-06-2007, 11:48 AM
The cooler pipes came from this guy:
http://stores.ebay.com.au/auturbo
he has them listed for $200 but if u haggle he might give it to u cheaper. then just ask him for the extra reducers for an extra how much ever, thats what i did, not sure how he'll go, if he charges u alot for shipping ill pick them up for u and ship em cheap.
yeah im happy with the pricing so far :)
040501912 i cant belive you only have 2 pq points!!! uve helped me like 10 times in this thread alone lol
rnbguy
20-06-2007, 11:49 AM
ill most likely need a clutch but ill wear this baby out before i get a new one, itll probably be around $400 for heavy duty clutch installed and flywheel machined from what ive seen
040501912
20-06-2007, 11:59 AM
When the last time u change ur clutch??
i change mine last year with the oem spec, it still last me. :) if the clutch doesnt gave up, dont change yet.. you might wasting a good pads there, no body will buy 2nd hand clutch. waste it first :p
rnbguy
20-06-2007, 12:00 PM
yeah ill defenitly waste it first for sure... it came with car so not sure when they were last changed to be honest. i might change to oem when they waste it it works out alot cheaper
haha u can always add to his rep. thats what ur surpose to do when people help u out
i changed mine when i was doing the work on my car, difference is my engine and gear box was out the car so alot easier to change. i dont think a stock clutch will last to long on a boosted d
serpo
20-06-2007, 12:10 PM
ye no shit, oi guys you can run a Intercooler to air box cant you, so it takes in cooler air
rnbguy
20-06-2007, 12:15 PM
aza i cant add to his rep because im on 0, trust me i tried =)
serpo im sure u cant, intercoolers dont suck in air they just cool air flowing through it, unless ur saying have the intercooler outlet to air box and inlet to air filter which i dont think will work because it may disrupt air flow
serpo
20-06-2007, 12:16 PM
hmmm some ppls say yes some say no who is like the ultimate turbo person?
in saying that though the old clutch i took out was stock and the guy had never changed it in the last set up, mind u it drove like puss so probable why it held up as long as it did.
040501912
20-06-2007, 02:21 PM
hahaha .. im waiting for rep :p im on every pages of ur thread LOL !!!
btw. u can tell when cltuch giving up. mine still plenty of meat, only change last year.. now abusing it hauhauha !!!

hey aza your bonnet cleared the external gate huh? without needing an elbow
yeah my external gate clears it fine mate. if ur still using a t28 off an rb20 tell me i got some pics last night of how my inter cooler connects and oil lines.
rnbguy
20-06-2007, 06:38 PM
ahh i took the rb20 and swapped it for a mates t04e and his external gate, buttt now im worried the gate wont clear with cast iron mani so might test fit it, if not then i need a elbow made for it
ye no shit, oi guys you can run a Intercooler to air box cant you, so it takes in cooler air
What do you mean?
An intercooler only cools the air if there is a large differance in temperature flowing through the intercooler compared to the air flowing over the intercooler, its all about thermo dynamics. For example if the air flowing through the core is the same temp as the air flowing over it, the temp of the intake air wont change at all. The only time an intercooler can do its job is when the air flowing through the core it is hotter than the air outside, then it can transfer its heat into the cooler outside air. Heat enery is transfered from the hotter matter to the cooler matter, theres no transfer of heat energy if both substances are at the same temp.
So If your talking about adding an intercooler, so ambient temp air is sucked through it, then into the airbox on a N/A car, it would be pointless. The only time an intercooler is useful is when its placed in the charge pipe beteween the turbo and the throttle body, where there the compressed air is at a higher temp.

hows the project goin RnBguy?
Tholakan
26-06-2007, 11:13 AM
might be able to rotate the turbo and move the a/c fan to the other side of the bumper (reversing the wiring on fan to reverse fan blow direction)
You can't just reverse the direction of a fan to run the other way as the blade is only designed to run in one direction. If you look you will notice it has a convex and a concave side to each blade
rnbguy
26-06-2007, 11:14 AM
its cool i ordered a manifold to suit current fan, which is slowing project down because bl*ody USPS is sending it soo slow

rnbguy
02-07-2007, 04:19 PM
ive heard (and again this is just off people on forums not pros) that skyline turbos spool nice compared to the rb20 turbo so might be better go that path if u like although i like the idea of the rb20 ball bearing turbo , if u can get a good cond rb20 turbo then replace the ceramic exhaust wheel with a metal one, uve got urself a machine

check out the vl forums for some cheap turbos. If your not going to touch the motor internally id put a big turb on something like a td06

heres a tip for anyone doing a turbo project, GET A SMALL OIL FEED T-piece, the moron that sold me my T piece gave a very long one which made life alot harder then it had to be lol, finally ended up getting it in but woulda been simple if the T was smaller.
