OK guys I need help and reading all 21 pages didn't help me much.
I'm not driving on racetracks, I'm just driving on suburban roads and freeways.
My OEM Bridgestones have had it after 39,000kms and Ringwood Honda have quoted me $450 each to replace them ... cough cough yeah right, guys. Well, they also suggested Yokohama for $250 (although at the time I didn't ask which ones).
So now I need new tyres for my Accord Euro Sport 2006. Cost is more important than performance, although safety is more important than cost (and noise is a factor too). I'd be happy to pay $300 rather than $200 if the tyre was going to last twice as long too.
So how do I choose? Any suggestions for further reading? Or just tell me what to get?
Thanks guys.

Call up Bob Jane, Tyre Power or Bridgestone Tyre Centre. Ask for the price of Bridgestone Adrenalin RE001.
If you want a tyre that lasts long, ask for Yokohama C.Drive or S.Drive. DO NOT buy tyres through the dealer. The charge too much.

Isnt it funny how some people have different experience with tyres. Over the last five years I have been trying to find some tyres that would last as long as the original Dunlops on my Euro.(36000k's)
Yokohama C drive was one I tried and only got 15000k's out of them, and VERY noisy after a bit of wear.
I wouldnt go near Yokohamas again.
Out of all the "top name" tyres I have tried on the 140,000k's I have travelled in my Euro, Michelin tyres were the tyres that came the closest, to emulating the performance of the original Dunlops.
I have allways paid top dollar for top brand tyres, but it seems to make no difference to how long they last.
I have just purchased the cheapest tyre I could find, which was a "Maxxis" brand for $175
My driving consists of 160k of highway driving on the M1 from Gold Coast to Brisbane ever day, and have often wondered if the concrete surface of the highway has any detrimental effect, causing me to only get 18 -20000ks from any tyre.

We put Yokohama C.drives on one of our cars in 2005, and they are still on now with lots of thread after driving over 33000km (original Dunlop SP2020e lasted about 30,000km before losing chunks of rubber off the shoulder. Less than 3mm left on the indicator too). The C.Drive is also quieter than Dunlop SP2050m and even my RE001. I'll let you know when they are worn out. THey are a hard compound tyre, so they are NOT for thrashing around on the street with. If you do, the tyre wears very quickly. These tyres are for sedate driving.

Why were you trying to emulate the performance of the Dunlop SP2050m? The performance was so bad that I think even Nankangs would have out-gripped it.

Yes, concrete roads do wear tyres quicker. Have you tried any softer compound tyres like Bridgestones on this concrete highway?

Hi all.
Thanks for all the advice. I also spoke to a mate of mine (WRX freak) who'd just put on the RE001's a couple of months ago and was VERY happy.
So in the end I went for the Bridgestone RE001's. Got them for $215 fitted from Bridgestone in Box Hill.
So far so good, only driven 10 mins in busy traffic so far.

I'm approaching 100,000km's just put on a new set of yokohama c.drive's 17/225/45, coming from dunlop sport maxx's (they lasted 50,000km with about 3mm of wear left)
So far I've noticed the yoko c.drives are the quitest out of all three set of tyres I've gone through, handling wise they are quite up there with the oem or the dunlop's but i was after a quite tyre so overall I'm happy with that for $200 a corner I can't compain. Handling wise the Dunlop sport maxx's were the best hands down and much quiter then the oem's.

do the new euros have a bigger wheel arch? lol

When it comes time to replace tyres CU2 owners will have the option of going for 235/4517s which should be cheaper than 225/50s due to the number of cars(Holden and Ford)that use that size.

No, I'm saying the new 09 is meant to have 225/50 R17 worldwide.
The 03-08, the size depends on the country. We get 225/45 R17, but Japan and USA gets 215/45 R17.

As well as the new 09, which aaronng correctly states comes with 225/50R17 tyres on the 17 inch rims, he was talking 03-08. I was just providing correct information on the 03-08 tyre sizes for the 17 inch rims. For all I know, he could have just made a typo.

IMO, the Dunlop Direzza DZ101s type tread pattern would be nosier than the Premium; which for now in Oz is the Dunlop SP SportMaxx. The SP SportMaxx we have here has been superseded in some parts of Europe by the Dunlop SP SportMaxx GT and the Dunlop SP SportMaxx TT. The TT is the highest performance Dunlop at the moment. As far as I know, we haven't got them yet.
See the range at: http://dunlop-tires.com/dunlop_dede/tyre_range/car_tyres/uhp/summer/
It gives a better idea of the Dunlop pecking order which in Europe is (highest performance at the top):
SP SportMaxx TT
SP SportMaxx GT
SP SportMaxx
SP Sport 9000
SP Sport 8000
SP Sport 01
SP Sport 2000/2000E
SP Sport 3000A

damn serious? TT and GT.
only recently put SP sportmaxx on my 18" and find them pretty decent + quiet compared to stock though.
and also NOTE that the tyres can be manufactured in japan or germany as when i got quoted german produced tyres were approximately $100+ than japanese which were going for about $220-240/corner.

Taleb Tyres is doing Dunlop Direzza 101s for $180 a tyre in 225/45 R17 which is very cheap compared to tyre dealers I have had quotes from generally. That seemed to make them a good buy IMO as I have read reviews and they seem to be pretty favourable. The price is more what you pay for falcodore 235/45 R17s around the place. One guy on the forum says he has them and they are quiet, grip really well and ride nicely another says they are noisy so it's a bit of a lottery I guess.

Well differences for ride quality could be anything from suspension setup to tyre pressure.

hey guys, i'm up for replacing all 4 tyres (16inch), i've called hornsby bob jane about the RE001's and they've sold out now. They've recommend the Pirelli P6000 for the same price ($165). what do you guys think? Are they similar to the Pirelli Dragons? Or should i just go to any bob jane and get the RE001's for $189 per corner since they on special now?

Yeah I thought that too but it seems that 2000 series (not the lesser 200 series) of which the Euro Standard stock 2050M is a derivative, is considered higher than the 3000A which was, until the recent closing of the South Pacific Tyres factory, manufactured in Oz as well.

if you don't trust them then go japanese(aluminium racing) lock nuts which will set you back $200-250/set.
sets normally come with the adapter socket except maybe the cheapy ones, make sure you get the right lug pattern and style nut (acorn or tapered)

damn, i paid like 9.6x more than what you did for lugs.
But then mine were lightweight aluminium 5zigen pro racer ones, and im still scared they might fail and pop off cause aluminium is softer.
Wished lugs were cheaper.

yeah, i sorta thought that too so i rang around a bit and the best i got was $175 @ Tyrepower in Hornsby for the RE001's so i'm gonna get those done. $175 still isn't that bad when everywhere else is doing it around $210.
and if anyone else wants to get them, apparently a few guys told me there's gonna be a price hike on them at the end of the month.(possibly due to end of sale??). so just a heads up for you guys.
also thanks alot for everyones opinions.

Probably softer compound which doesn't last as long. But in any case, Dunlop in Germany at least (which is the url I posted) appears to put the 2000 series above the 3000A.

225/45 R17 for $180 is a very good price! That's cheaper than many 16" tyres. For street use, it will be more than enough, as they should be better than the OEM RE040.

well well....i had a minor car accident today, and i'm blaming it partly on my tyres.
i bought some second hand wheels and they had some crappy brand tyres on them and i hadn't got around to changing them yet coz i'm lazy, not to mention strapped for cash.
so today, i approach an intersection (red light). road was wet from the rain, there was a slight curve on approach to the intersection.

^ google street view if u want to see where it happened.
anyway, there was a car at the lights in the right hand lane turning right, and i wanted to be on the left hand lane.
i was approaching a little bit fast (nothing too crazy), and when i started braking i could feel the ABS going and my wheels locked up, and i clipped the rear corner of the car in front. my car just slid all the way forward like i was on ice.
if i had better tyres on i am almost certain i would have had better grip and wouldn't have slid so far.
i was just wondering though why my wheels locked up and if VSA was working???
anyway, partly my fault for braking a bit hard, but the moral of the story is DO NOT BUY SH!T TYRES.
pics soon.

VSA corrects your oversteer/understeer as i tested it on track as you oversteer the line your taking, it flicks your car back on the line + cuts power to the car.
ABS is like that it locks your front wheels/rear wheels, e.g in a situation like a race track you would aim the steering off the track so when ABS activates you will guide it safely rather than causing an accident.
IMO - VSA does not really coincide much with ABS itself but cuts power/brakes when in emergency oversteer/understeer situation.
BUT SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS MORE EXPERIENCE CAN CORRECT ME IF I AM JUST A SPAMMER. :p
Don't tell me you had some chinese branded tyre or Antyre or something....
Tyres are more precious than you think, top quality branded tyres make a big difference in stoppage time and distance. *touch wood* but can mean the difference between life and death.

I scored Bridgestone Potenza RE001 Adrenalin 225/45R17 for $225 a corner at my local bridgestone tyre centre.
Excellent tyre and huge amount of grip!
They work well with a touch of toe out on the front and -1 toe in on the rear.
-1.5 camber front and rear.

Hi guys,
I got Dunlop Direzza DZ 101's from Taleb Tyres in 225/45/17 and I'm really happy with the ride, handling, tyre noise of them. Theye did a very good deal about Oct 08 for me.
I'm about to replace my stock 16" rims with 17" luxury ones. What tyres would you guys recommend for it? I think the standard size is 225/45R17. My budget is around $1000-$1200 for the set. I'm after performance and feel with reasonable wear.
Any ideas/opinions are welcome.

Price the Direzza DZ 101s 225/45/17s from your local Dunlop supplier and you'll find the cheapest will be $280 and often they will be around $300+.

which F1 model? I've had the german-made GSD03 before. it is fantastic.. you can really push the car hard with that.
I've no experience with the China made ones, but I've heard some horror stories with them.

I have had a set 235/40/R18 Sumitomo Z3 for about 20000 Km. Very good tires. I drive fairly aggressive, and they are wearing quite nicely.
The wet performance of tire is almost as good as dry. I have a few twisty bits near my house and in the wet its only marginaly slower. Mind you coilover do help though :D

Resurrecting an old thread, my Yoko's C-drive have now done 35-40k and I am wondering what to replace them with next:
1. REO50's
2. Another set of Cdrive
3. The tyre shop is trying to push the Advan v103's on the basis they cost the same as the C-drive and are a better tire.
Comfort, durability and road noise are my priorities, I know all three tyres handle well.
The C-drives/Advans are around $300 a piece (17"); Potenza's $400.

The RE001 gets a pretty good wrap too. It just depends on your budget.
You can haggle and play a few tyre shops off against each other. Just pick a tyre and do the ring around, asking if they'll beat the last guy. If they won't, ask which tyre they will do a good deal on. They all try to push something different - depending on what they got a good deal on from their suppliers.
Got some Bridgestone RE001 Adrenalin 225/45/17 on my Fronts with the original RE040 at the rear. I have definitely found what I'm looking for in terms of handling / ride / comfort for a street tyre. The steering response is very linear, the car holds its balance (instead of wobbling with other tyres) and stays relatively flat during a sweeping corner and you can really feel the grip on the outside of the tyres. All this with a smooth and relatively quiet roll. Love it! (PSI: 38F/36R)
The last time I found a tyre that I REALLY liked and responded in very similiar ways was the Yokohama A509 (which was a very popular tyre with around '10' year product life cycle and on a Prelude). I think it has to do with the square'ish and big shoulder blocks as well as the assymetrical design (just like the A509). So happy!! :~>

My Euro has now done 153000k's and my fuel economy is heading south fast over the last couple of months. Around 11 or 12L per 100k which is a lot worse than i have previously got.
I have noticed that my stainless exhaust pipe tips are rather sooty black.
In years gone by this would indicate that the fuel mixture is too "rich" .
Is that still true with today's fuel and engines ??

I just installed c-drive (225/40/18) and very happy with the grip and noise of the tyres. Depends what you want in the tyres. The c-drives offer more grip thus will probably wear a bit quicker than the harder component tyres that dont grip as well.
I will go potenza for my next set i think, just to see how they compare.

Gotta replace two tyres on my euro. 225/45R17.
Been quoted $235/tyre fitted for RE001 and $280/tyre fitted for C.Drive.
Given those two choices and prices which one would you go for?
I am after quiet rides and durability and am leaning toward C.Drive.

I am thinking of buying some new tyres but cannot decide which one for both quietness and low/no tramlining.
Option 1 - Michelin Pilot Preceda II's
Option 2 - Sumitomo ZIII's
Option 3- Toyo Teo's
I know there is a huge price difference between them however that isn't a concern, the above is.
Would love to hear opinions.

I have the Sumi's and they are unbelievable for the price you pay. In really heavy rain I turned off traction control and it broke traction but gathered it up quiker than the Re040's ever did.

Hi Guys
Would like your opinion, am trying to choose between 3 tyres (225/45/17)...
1. Michelin Pilot Sport 3 (PS3) released in Jan 2010 to replace PS2 & PP2
2. Bridgestone Adrenelin RE001
3. Firestone Wide Oval (exclusive to Bob jane only now)
Now the wide oval has a great review on tire rack, the Michelins are a brand new tyre and are supposed to be better than the PP2's which were apparently awesome, and the Adrenelin also gets really good reviews.
The tyre wear rating on both the Michelin and Wide Oval are 320 where the Adrenelin is 220.
1. Michelin is on special atm for around $250 instead of around $300
2. Adrenelins can get for $225
3. Wide Oval are $209
So what would be the pick do you guys think???
Im inclined to go Michelins, they are coming out on the new E63 AMG's...but........

I actually got a cheaper price than the $250 for the Michelin PS3, Payless Tyres in Chullora offered to beat the price I got and gave me a price of $240 each, only catch was I had to leave a deposit so he could order them in, I cbf'd.......so there you go.....just shop around....I got prices of $315 as well....Michelin Aust told me they retail at $330 + GST, however Michelin was running a special on the 225/45/17 for the month of March, they run specials on certain sizes form time to time so they say.....

I would recommend the Michellin preceda's. I just recently changed my tires from Preceda's to Yoko S.Drives. The precedas are definitely better.
I was debating between S.drives and Toyo T1R's and only ended up getting the S.drives because it was being offered on special.
Since I have switched to the S.Drives I have noticed the below
Cons
1. Longer Braking Distance
2. Less Grip in both dry and wet
Pros
1. Less tramlining
In regards to the other two options. I have never tried them so can't comment.

Got Prellie P7 225/45 R17 Today on special fo r $254 but I Got $249 per corner from bob jane
just by ring up different bob jane stores
P7 Tread wear rating 260 , made in china
I could get P zero for cheaper $235 but tread wear 220
as I don't want to change tyre too soon they cost way too much
$1000 ouch !!
My first impression is soft and quiet compare to what i had before
but abit bouncing than what i had before Bridgestone RE040 front / Goodyear LS2000 back
i did feel sidewall is softer than yokohama C Drive (before installed)
before i was not so happy with the 2006 euro ride , too sporty and hard for my like
Now feel more like luxury sedan , Quite and comfort .....YES !!
hope they don't wear out too fast
DRY And WET grip is yet to be tested
from my exprience tread wear 160 bridgestone duller last around 30000KMs
therefore tread wear 50 = 10000KMs (Just my formula under my driving condition)
hope my P7 will last 50000KMs

I have just changed to Pirelli P7s and cold mornings seem to make the wheel balance out of wack. I've never experienced this before and the retailer is (apparently) finding out from Pirelli if the cold is causing the tyre to reshape and potentially causing a "flat spot" until they warm up. Has anyone else come across this before? The wheels are balanced properly as they seem to be fine when it's warm, I'm just not sure if there's something else in the car that could cause a shake which appears identical to a poorly balanced wheel.
My car has 225/45 R17s on it. Any clues? I can see a few others have these tyres so I assume it shouldn't really be the tyres unless these particular ones are faulty.

haha- 36 pages and i still cant figure out what tyres i want. I do mainly highway k's between sydney and canberra with the occasional twistys and also the weekend cruises/spirited driving moments. Can anyone recommend a good tyre for me, keeping in mind wear etc etc. Any help would be great. cheers!
I have been very happy with a set of Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres. I 'll be buying the new Dunlop Sport MAXX TT next. I have been using 205/50R17 instead of 225/45R17 (same overall diameter) and totally eliminated tramlining. The width differnce is hardly noticeable.
I might go back to the stock 16 inch rims because I feel a new car approaching sometime within the life of a set of tyres. But I might go for the 225/50R16 size instead of the stock 205/55R16 (same overall diameter). I would expect the return of tramlining though.

Did a little tyre (225/45/R17) shopping today, will probably need a new set in the next 5-10k. Currently I got Michelin PP2's on the front, and Pirrelli PZero Rosso's on the back. The PP2's were new on the car when I got it, and the Pzero's were near new. So far they've done ~45,000k, which I think is pretty good?
Anyway, I stopped in at Jax QF at Browns Plains:
Michelin PS3's: $259
Pirelli P7's: $259
Maxxis IPro's: $249
Bob Jane Browns Plains:
Michelin PS3's: $289
Falken Ze912: $209
These prices were without any haggling (since I was just shopping around), but I reckon I could of screwed em down a little further.
What would you guys go for? Do the PS3's have the 2-ply sidewalls like the PP2's? I do like the look and feel of the PP2's, i'm assuming the PS3's would have comparable performance?

You PZero's had done 45K already? you probably get another 10k out of them at most I reckon, PZero's aren't exactly the most hard wearing compound.
Anyhow, I heard good things about the Falken ZE912, it's like a performance tire on the cheap.
I'll personally never buy Michelin or Pirelli... Since the "Premium" priced tyre you buy have every chance of being made out of the same factory as them kumho's or maxxis or whatever, and some of those cheaper tires work just as well if not better (eg: Nexen, the cheap Korean tire manufacturer used to make Michelin's for them...). Each to their own i guess.

Ahh, should have worded that better. The PZero's were near new (had maybe done 5k), and the PP2's were brand new when I got the car. The PZero's are closer to being worn out than the PP2's, but I figured I might as well replace all 4 at once (not real sure why the previous owner didn't rotate their tyres and replace all 4 at once!?).
Anyway, reading up on the Falken ZE912 spec sheet, they do seem like a good value tyre, i'll have to do some more research.

Don't get Kumho KU21. I've had them for the past 3000km and they're terrible. Ride and tyre noise is fine, but they have no grip both in the wet and dry. Way worse than the almost bald tyres that came off the car...

I use Bridgestone Turanza E300 and love them for their silence and grip. The silence is deafening - I love it.
Beautiful touring tyre - no issues with grip either at 205/50/R16 on a CD5 Accord.

Damn I had decided to get the Kumho KU31's 225/45/17 as they are much cheaper but get good reviews. Turns out Kumho had a big price rise at the end of last year. KU31's are $196 each from www.option1garage.com.au and $215 fitted from a Bob Jane in Adelaide. The tyre manager at option1 confirmed that Kumho has lifted prices via email. Used to be able to get them around $130 at option1 :(
Oh well, still cheaper than Yoko C Drives I was quoted $290 at the same Bob Jane.. Yikes. Might have to call around a bit more. Any Adelaidians here got some recommendations for good tyre places?

Have just got new tyres on my CU2 Lux (55K on the OEM Michi's)
Apparently I got the last set of 235/45 R18's of any brand in Aus according to BJ, Jax, Tyrepower
Not sure if true guy's but I have been searching prior to Xmas, hope no one needs tyres soon. Was told by several shops that it will be 12 weeks before any stock lands in OZ
Ended up with Continentals at $500 a corner (they were shipped up from Melb to Brisvegas) - unfreakinbelievable

could have been a lot cheaper to import a set from tirerack. US$194X4 = US$776
plus shipping US$300
plus gst + duty (may or may not be liable, depending if they custom incl shipping into the AU$1000 limit) $150
plus fitting and balancing $60
total roughly AU$1310

get Michelin Pilot Sport 2 in 225 40 18 delivered from tirerack.com for AU$1200.
or get Pilot Sport 3 on eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4-X-Brand-New-225-40-18-MICHELIN-PILOT-SPORT-3-TYRES-/230575665151?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35af616fff
you can then ask Bob Jane how much they're selling the Pilot Sport 2 and 3 for and you'd smile all the way home if you get the above.

Ive had Faulken's..did not enjoy them, for me, too much road noise , but i do drive on some pretty rough road.. the maxxis range and yokohama range (200-250 mark) have been the best for me (driving on ice as well as wet roads). Have definitely kept me safe. HTH

If I recall, the stock rims are 17 x 7. The minimum legal rim width for 235/45R17 tyres is 7.5 inch.

but why would you fit narrower tyres for the CL9?
also, 215/45R17 may not be at least 91W load rating. remember, if your tyre load rating is less than the minimum requirement, insurance companies will deny your claim if anything happens and they could find any evidence pointing to the illegal tyres.

remember, rules of thumb:
high wear rate = harder rubber = less grippy
low wear rate = sticky & soft rubber = very grippy
so, pick your poison that suits you :p

I can get Pirelli P7s for $259
Dunlop Fast Reponse for $314
Toyo Teo Plus for $220
Yokohama C-Drive for $273.
Still confused. I just do local driving...

you'd be happy with any of above. so go cheapest :-)
Theres no stand out because all tyres has their goods and bads
if any of the recent (past 2-3 years) tyre test done by Wheels mag is of any guide, tyres thats exceptional in the dry are usually......... not so much in the wet. hence.

As mentioned, I bought Bridgestones Turanza's at 205/50/R16 for my Koni Yellow Equipped Accord CD5. And loved them. The silence is so nice and anyone who is aware of road tyre roar will appreciate how quiet they are. Particularly in comparison to Dunlop Sport 3000s and some Italian Brand I cant remember the name of. That said, I'm really keen to try a Potenza Adrenalin RE002 for the next set of tyres to see what they are capable of before I upgrade the car.
I have recently bought 4 x Bridgestone Turanza ER300s for our Jazz - (as opposed to the stock Bridgestone Potenza RE050s) - at 185/55/R15s.
Noticeably, navigating around carparks and low speed driving, its a lot easier to steer. Of course the noise at 60klms/h and faster is exquisitely silent.
Handling is largely unchanged as the Jazz VTi-S is so top heavy anyway and the limits seem pretty much the same - it does feel slightly softer on the limits and its a little less confidence inspiring at the limit, although its rare that I'm there in the Jazz, so its not an issue.

Compared to what?
I have KU31s on my car, they're quite possibly the worst tyres I've ever used. Can't wait for them to finish wearing down, hopefully only about a year to go.
They're useless in the dry, and downright dangerous in the wet. The tyres that they replaced were 50,000km old OEM tyres which still had more grip than the KU31s.

if price is a big consideration, yes the KU31 is one of the best (value) tyres in the market.
but if you wanna know the best street performance tyres, these two are the cream of the crop:
Pilot Super Sport (best street dry grip)
http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/michelin/mi_pilot_ss_ci2_l.jpg
Goodyear F1 Asy 2 (best balanced wet and dry)
http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/goodyear/gy_eag_f1_asy2_ci2_l.jpg
but those two cost 2 or 3 times the price of a KU31 for the same size. it's like a Merc costs 2-5 times of a Hyundai, bear in mind Kumho is OEM for most Korean made cars too! but can't find KU31 as OEM tyres for an AMG or M3.
I uses Pirreli P7's they are not too bad

I just ordered Bridgestone S001's for my CU2, I get them fitted next Thursday. I've got the Bridgestone RE050A's on my ISF and they are a nice tyre (especially in the wet), these S001's are meant to be the RE050A update. Should be more than adequate for the shopping trolley, and a big step up from the Toyo transpath MP4's that I got on at the moment.
Good to see we are starting to get decent tyres in the stupid 98 load rating that Honda Australia blessed us with....

Alright, after reading thru all these pages, I finally went with the RE002's. to replace the Bridgestone Turanza ER370's, that came with my car.Been on for a couple of weeks now and:
-They're quieter
-Definitely grip better, thru tight turns at speed.
-The steering is lighter and feels more responsive, how this is related to the tyres is beyond me.
-Still have to try them in wet weather.
Overall happy with them, I'd say I'm a spirited driver.

Heres my review of the Conti SportsContact 3...
Had them fitted for $200 each (205/55/16)
Now, they are brilliant in the dry, responsive, grippy and light (much lighter then the Nexen I used to have)
AND QUIET (like really quiet). They are better than the Dunlop SP sports I had initially, and better than the KU31's I had before that.
... Then it rained....
Well in plain wet tarmac, it's still great.
But when you hit standing water.... goodness it floats and unsettles, much worse than the "crappy" Nexen's I used to have.
Guess I have to slow down in the wet from now on.

Mines fine in the dry... But fk it's scary over puddles.
