pretty noob question:

does the button on the auto stick really help changing gears? can it be removed? know what im talking about? lol cause i was wanting to remove it and have a stick kinda thing in place so i wouldnt have to press again.

ive seen it done on a lancer and the guy made it look like a manual stick. im not going for that look, just that its a hassle to press it in everytime i reverse/drive/neutral.

When you did your license you should have learnt what that button is for. It's very important.

You only need the button to between certain gears. It's a safety thing to stop the car suddenly going from drive or neutral to reverse or park to reverse. It's there to save gearboxes and lives. Removing would be illegal.
You shouldn't need it to go from 1,2,3 D etc. If I recall in my previous auto cars you didn't. My Euro has tiptronic for manually changing gears.

lol, i've done it before, its really not necessary, but as above, its not safe if you accidently bump the shifter into the wrong gear...

and you should never shift up and down in an auto unless its a tiptronic. it'll stuff your gearbox nice a quickly...

i should? hm...never saw anything of it in w.a lol. i dont go into 1,2,3, just to neutral every now and then.

mmm....just tried it..never realised it stops going from R to P. lol most people i ask dont know what its for.

well i brings up part of the original question, can you change the shape of the stick but with the button. not sure if theres a aftermarket part for this?

i just really dont like the shape of it :P if its unsafe to remove the button then i wont.

you can buy aftermarket auto shift knobs... from most places like autobarn and such.. or ebay..

someone on the classifieds is selling a gruppe-M NSX auto shift knob. that'd be pretty tidy.

Just watch with aftermarket shifters that the shifter in long enough. I tried to change the shifter in a previous car and was about 1.5" short.

have you guys ever seen mythbusters where they tested if you can go from drive to reverse or park when going at any speed ? ... well they did it and the car's computer just stops anything silly from happening .. so it really doesn't do anything if you accidently go into the wrong gear in an auto.

i got 94 civic so no computer there. i actually did it once and the car screeched lol but yeah its not dangerous. you would be a very very bad driver if you stick it in reverse at the lights and literally rearend someone so i guess thats what the lock is for :P

Not true you can manually shift all you want and it will NOT cause a problem to your gearbox. Unless you do something stupid like neutral rev drop into gear.

well, i'm not sure wat ****ed my gearbox then... i'm pretty confident it was me dropping into 3 when going around corners, and back up into D, acting like a dick...

treating an auto like a manual surely can't be good for a box. just like treating a dog like a cat won't be healthy...

i was tempted to do something like that but i thought that would REALLY ruin the gearbox, i just shift into neutral at long redlights. can anyone confirm what 1,2,3 gears are for? i heard its for towing but why 3 gears thats never used?

edit: hm...i found this..

I'm not just "pretty confident" I'm SURE that manually shifting an automatic gearbox won't do it any harm. There are safeguards built into the transmission to prevent juvenile males from unintentionally doing damage.

How does one treat an inanimate object like a transmission like a living species of animal for sure the transmission doesn't "KNOW" anything either being treated like a dog or if it "Likes" one style of driving over another.

Gears 1 2 3 are what you hear every time your transmission shifts. It starts in 1 then shifts to 2 then 3 AUTOMATICALLY that is why it's called an automatic it shifts the gears for you just like a magic manual transmission that shifted by itself.
