View Full Version : [DIY] Installing JDM Type-R (FD2R) grille on civic FD

someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own
risk!

Tools :
Short Screw drivers (flat and philip)
Angle Screw drivers (optional)
Paper sticky tape
Marker
Sharp Blade/cutter
Drill bits

Parts :

1 set of JDM Civic Type-R FD2R grille (3 pcs)
includes : Dark chrome top grille , Black mesh bottom grille with fins and Back Emblem holder plate

STAGE I
REMOVING STOCK GRILLE

1. You need to take off 5 clips from radiator cover and 3 clips from side of the bay

2. Remove the black plastic radiator cover
3. If You have angle screw driver will easier to unscrew 2 screw which hold the stock grille and bumper.

4. You need to take off 4 clips from the bottom of the grille (2 each side). This little bit pain ass coz the clips facing down.

note : Try to find the 2 hole on side of the clip and using small flat screw driver to pop up the clip

5. Now you can remove stock grille. (note: my stock grille already had red H badge on it)

6. Removing grille without dismantle the bumper

STAGE II
PREPARING TYPE-R GRILLE

1. From the bottom of new (type-R) grille, there's 4 screw mounting holes, cut/saw them off

2. Using sharp blade/cutter, clean up by re-cut left over excess.

3. Using sharp blade (might use different shape blade), cut off/trim the edge of the grille

4. Apply 3M/strong double sticky tape at the bottom of the grille.

5. Assembly all the 3 pieces of the grille together (and also the red H badge).

FAQ. Can stock chrome grille fit on Type-R bottom mesh grille ?
-Nope. different size (middl part)

STAGE III
INSTALL TYPE-R GRILLE

1. Place the the grille on the bumper (do not peel of the double tape), and put 2 clips at the side for holding the grille to the bumper
2. Adjust the new grille position (the H badge area should - at least- covering middle curve at the bumper)
2. Put paper sticky tape on existing screw hole plate to mark new holes position at different spot

3. Cover surrounding area, and drill to make new hole (start from small drill bit first)

4. Now u can take off those two clips again (no 1)
5. Peel off the double tape, place ur new grille at the correct position, screw ur grille at the new holes (no 3)
(note: due to slightly different shape between civic FD and Type-R, it would leave tiny small gap around the grille, but hard to notice unless u see from 30 cm distance)

Btw only thing I'm not sure about is using the double sided tape. I did that to keep my Mugen replica grille from rattling but instead it's left a horrible residue which I should probably clean off asap and use some new strips of tape.

what's the double sided sticky tape for? and why do we need to cut the clips and the trim off??

double side sticky tape ? for stick it...lol...joking.
Front grille need to be hold at the top and bottom by screws (our stock grille)
now, the bottom of FD2R front grille have clip to mount ONLY fit to FD2R bumper, not for FD bumper (that's why we have to trim/cut them off)
because of that, the grille don't have clip to mount the screw at the bottom.
That's why we need strong double sided tape to hold bottom part to our FD bumper (top part, we just screw to stock mount position)

thr trim of edges, if you don't want to cut off, it's ok too.

My fd 1 currently on replica type r body kit, i wonder if this grill can be put on my car...coz i think mine one dont have enough space to put/stick the base of grill.. :( , any suggestions? correct me if im wrong ..
