View Full Version : Modifying a vehicle - QLD

Am getting conflicting information from the insurance company and the Queensland Transport website about vehicle modifications. It's abit confusing.

Basically I was considering lowering my car by 2" and getting some 17" rims on it. The insurance company (RACQ GIO) said it is illegal to lower a car by 2" and the limit is only 1.5". The rims, as long as they are worth less than $2000, is OK and won't affect the premium. Riiight, I thought.

So I jumped on the QLD Transport website for a look. According to this link: www.transport.qld.gov.au...odifications.pdf, to lower a car, it can't be less than 100mm clearance under the car. It does not mention 1.5" anywhere. So I interpret this as long as the undercarriage is 100mm or above, it is legal. Whether or not this equates to a 1.5" drop I don't know yet, I'll have to measure it out.

It's abit difficult to understand, doesn't seem clear-cut. Does someone know from your own experience what can and can't be done to satisfy the law and insurance?

You may be able to lower to a 100mm clearance by road laws, but the insurance company may not insure you with that ride height. (Maybe?)

Thats usually the case. And alpine - have a look in the bookelet again. There is the 100mm law, but there are also rules about the suspension travel and steering geometery...

So in other words...alot of us who have dropped our cars by 2.5"..3" running on 18" rims are totally doing so illegally...both with transport laws and insurance. :(

Depends on your insurance company, some allow mods to the suspension eg lowering and others dont. I was with AAMI and the wouldnt cover me for lowering 1.5" (age thing) and so had to go to just car and according to just car, as long as its legal they'll cover you for it

Also the 100mm is not the just the undercarrage, its the lowest point on the car, so if ur exhaust is hanging thats where they start measuring from

btw i have 17" and lowered on 1.5" on my civic, drives beautifully :)
