If the Pistons were siezed, the brakes wouldn't work at all.
Siezed slides can be checked easily.. Make sure the pads (inner and outer) are waring around the same amount.. If not, check/regrease the slides (This isn't the cause of your problems, it's just good maintainence since you'll be pulling it apart anyways) :cool:

Put the new pads in, tell your wife to stop riding or using the brake like it's a fragile system.
Brake late, brake hard (Obviously within reason, we don't want warpage!) and your brakes will be brilliant day in day out.
