Drive's review of the new civic

the comment section is comical.
The moment you know that this car will not be as good as you thought...

Driven the car twice now, auto vti-l - its much like the old car, slightly improved ride, but more or less the same. some parts more luxurious, some parts a bit cheapier.
the dash and i-mid is nice, but a bit novel maybe? The steering wheel and its controls are pretty beautiful, nice leather and rubber, and layout.
they are hard to get to drop price so far in perth, but a few hundred bucks seems easy so far. some say they almost all sold out, some say there plenty available...
the dealers will compete for me next week I think, or I'll just buy something cheaper... or wait... still undecided.
anyone got Q's? :D
^^^ if it feels the same then why do you bother?
good Question... we'll see if I do ^^
Saw new Civic yesterday. Styling is a step backwards. I think it will grow on me though. As they say don’t judge a book by it cover. Functionality wise its improved and safety hits the mark. The car is an incremental improvement, more a Gen 8.5 than 9.0. I’m ok with that. The car has the proven package underneath; Honda reliability, proven mechanicals and adequate performance. I will be looking soon to negotiate. There’s not much stock around.
If a new model comes out and it is a big step up from the Gen 9, I’ll consider it then. If you currently have a Gen 8 (with all airbags), you have to think hard is it worth the update.
I’ll aim to test both models in a couple of weeks. I don’t need leather and sunroof, so will probably look at a VTI-L. I think the Sport name should change. It is more a luxury model.
I’ve kept an eye on Gen 8 secondhand prices, for me it makes more sense to buy a Gen 9.
Sat in it yesterday on a test drive. I thought it looks and drive great. Coming from Japan is a big plus. This will be a solid seller. My daughter is getting the Dyno blue although I thought the red and graphite looks awesome too.
iPod integration is the best I've seen so far. Car drives beautifully and at 80kmh it feels refined, the suspension soaking up all bumps and undulations. Interior looks great too. Certainly better looking than Subaru Impreza interior.
You are hard to please that's all I can say.
anyone wna post some real life pics?
Bought one. VTi-L Auto. Urban Titanium. Dealer here in Adelaide gave me best trade-in on my 96 Celica with 370,000 K on the clock.
Change over price was what I appox ($250 over) wanted to pay. For that price they gave me rear park assist, car mat set & half tank petrol.
IMO the car looks refined and upmarket, 'classic' look. The quality finish you can see, both inside and out. Have not driven one as yet, will do next weekend. The VTi-L that I saw was still in the dealers workshop being prepared for the showroom. Take delivery on the 17th.
Regarding pricing, the dealer I went through charged me $1200 for pre-delivery. Out of curiosity I phoned another dealer to see what they charged.... $1600!
One question... what are your thoughts on having having 'door styling guards' on this new look Civic. Are they necessary, worthwhile, will it spoil the look?

We're getting the EUDM civic 1.6 turbo diesel hatchback later next year

Hi didler, seems we are on the same quest, I have come to the end of mine.
Originally was going to sell my car privately, too many hassles so I decided to trade in.
Most dealers offered $1500-$2000. Easiest way to explain is this... went to Honda dealer and said if I sign up now I want a Civic with rear park assist and mud flaps. They said no way on mud flaps but will give you extra $500 for trade in to cover park assist. So I would say $500 off RRP is doable (from my limited knowledge on how these things work). The only no cost options where the car mats and the petrol, but, I guess all dealers would do this. Also note what I said about dealer delivery - $400 difference between dealers.
Thanks for the positive comment on the door protectors, I was quoted $380 installed.
L2R
did you have to submit an offer on their form and sign to get what you wanted, or did you just get it through verbal negotiations?
they seem a bit tight so far around perth, but will get the 3 dealers to offer their best for me and I'll go between them.
I got 3 different quotes for all the addons at diff dealers too - but about 400 is right for door protectors.
There's not much in price movement you can negotiate on the new Civic but you can ask for accessories such as window tinting, floor mats and fog lights. $1200 for dealer delivery seems about right. On top of that I also managed to negotiate $290 off the purchased price and that is after all the goodies thrown in. There's also full tank of petrol and a $150 referral voucher redeemable for petrol, Woolworth, Coles etc.
The thing is after April, the Civic and Jazz revert back to being sourced from Thailand. This few batches are from Japan.
iPod integration is really good. You control it via a menu for songs and albums selection. All title, artist are shown on the lcd screen which is very nice. That same panel also toggles between, clock, fuel consumption and iPod display. You can even upload a favourite picture there.
The display right in front of the steering wheel shows coloured bars which changes from dark blue (heavy driving) to light blue and eventually green for cruising.
Bluetooth for hands free mobile phone operation is via controls on the steering wheel. I imagine this to be the same as the new Euro which I drive. This is very good and is a must especially when you can get fined for holding your phone whilst driving besides being dangerous.
I can tell you a lot more but you really need to see the car in person at the showroom. It looks much much better than on the website. It drives well too. I have test drive the Subaru Impreza and I must say the Subaru handles a bit better due to AWD but is $2 k more. Both cars feels nice to drive and both are new 2012 models which looks good and has solid resale value.
Of course there are other brands but if I favoured other brands I wouldn't be here on this Civic forum. Like I say I drive the Euro but I still think the new Civic is nice. Get it while it's still made in Japan.
i drove the Vti-L home last night for the first time.
before it was released i wasnt really excited about it as i thought it was too much like the old one, but there was nothing wrong with the old one.
Its drive is much much better than the old, quieter and handling is much better even more euro like. The steering is prob the best part, its fantastic.
ill drive it a few more times and see what else i like / dislike about it.
i find the dash set up better but its all a bit too hard like the plastics ect.
Hi didler, all my negotiations where verbal.
Godd luck, keep us posted.

Good to hear good reports coming in on the Civic. I don't know why people are bashing it before they have even seen it much less drive it.
Honda quality is still tops despite all the competitions which still has a way to go. I have 2 Euros with me currently and there is not a single problem with the 1st luxury Euro which is 3 years old. I've just gotten a new one a month ago and again it's flawless.
Having test drive the Civic I know it's the same Honda quality I've come to expect.
What I dont like is the fact that Honda makes some gadgets (e.g. rear park sensor) as an accessories on all level of trim, but other brand (even the Koreans) have this as standard. I think Honda is still think big of themself and put their car brand almost at the same level of European car.
Its kinda like they said "I know its more expensive and have less gadgets, but it's a Honda" Er... I dont think that will work nowadays...
^ gadgets which is already available with the other brand longtime ago....i think those added electronic gadget will not cost that much..and the car itself is overpriced
Now we're talking accessories :)
If you're referring to all Hondas then that's not true. Front and rear parking sensors are standard on my luxury Euro, which honestly is a nuisance. If you're a competent driver you don't need those sensors. Cameras are different.
Fact is Hondas are still better quality wise. The Koreans by that you're probably referring to Hyundai and their sister company Kia has still some way to go. They are fast catching up but not quite there yet.
At the end of the day it's a free world. You are free to choose the cars you decide to spend your hard earned cash on.
One thing though what you guys are doing is probably a big favour to those of us still wanting to buy Hondas. You have make Honda sit up and taken notice. They are starting to act to reduce their price and increase their value.
The NSX is returning and there will be more.
Glad you still like the CU2. As someone who has own one you will know how it drives. Besides at $29990 for a base Euro manual that's a real bargain drive away price.
Jazz should be compared to i20
Civic should be compared to i30
Those are the equivalent range. Admittedly the i30 is a pretty good car but I would still drive a Honda :)
I have no idea the NSX is not coming back as a Honda but what does it matter I won't be buying one :)
After Honda, I'd be looking at a BMW next.
Nope the NSX will definitely be sold in Australia as a Honda it has been announced.
Timeframe is 2015 - manufacturing in Ohio
It will be a V6 mid engine, all wheel drive and hybrid.
You have 3 years to save up for this toy.
hmm well having a tough time getting any discounts really in WA. my best bet is getting discounts off addons like door guards, rear sensors, tinting etc I reckon. Whats normally doable? 50% off rrp?
Are honda tints much good, or better than say tintacar?
do they have use with new models? i heard they dont achieve more than bargaining yourself...
It's a dealer arranged tinting with some third party company. Honda does no tinting on their own.
You should try and get at least window tinting, Civic logo carpet floor mats. After that try for one other big item like fog lights or rear sensors. If you don't get those thrown in at least get 50% on rrp of the item. I got fog lights for free as well that's because it's a 2nd Honda I got from them in 2 months. A Euro now a Civic.
Good luck! and as stated after Aprils stock, it reverts back to coming from Thailand.
Comparing Civic with Mazda 3 is like comparing Commodore with Falcons. You either like one or hate the other.
They are both good cars but IMO the Honda engines are their strong points. I've driven both Mazda 3 and the new Civic and I'll pick the Civic as far as driving goes. The Imprezas has the slight edge there because of AWD.
The Mazda 3 appeal is the all round package and that includes the price.
Similarly comparison between the Jazz and Mazda 2, the Jazz wins out any day where driving enjoyment is concern.
So you pick a car not because it's the best seller. For many of us we rather pick one we like and not follow the crowd.
god no not in australia, australia is the biggest selling market for mazda in the world!
our problem is we only really offer a base model sedan and only an high price end hatch.
we would need a 20,990 hatch to compete with the mazda!
my point was not all cars have sensors standard, even the best sellers. i believe they should but thats just my opinion like urs! my other opinion is if u need them then u need to learn how to park properly lol
and personally i dont like the mazda 3, as far as im concerned its a chicks car! i hate the front with the big smile face!
^agreed! It's so girly i don't know why, Perhaps it needs an angrier looking face like the civic's
Haha now the Civic fans has come out to play. Careful guys, if you keep talking good about Civic, the cars will sell so fast and the price will stay high.
So let's just keep it our little secret shall we.
2012 Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra earn five stars in NHTSA crash tests
March 6th, 2012 by Brady Holt
Not many small cars get this rating. The previous version on the Civic scored only 3.
+1 for Civic again
why do u want us to look at a home made youtube vid of a an american built and spec civic ?
^^ because it is neigh on identical to the Japanese/Thai built AUDM version.
lol lazy people! get out and have a look!
ps. jdm does not have sat nav like the one in the vid, and the vid one has leather where that is not an option for our vti-L
Ok whatever this is a Civic thread :)
On that score, I drive the new Civic from Canberra to Sydney and I must say it drives well. Quiet on the inside, cruise comfortably at 110 or 120 kph and has overtaking power.
Bluetooth for hands free mobile phone usage works the same as the Euro which is good.
Can even stream music via bluetooth to the sound system wirelessly.
I think it's a good small car.
to note, I bought mine last week, honda dealer in Perth. picking it up tommorow.
discount best I could get was free floor mats, petrol (givens), about 170 off the rrp price plus $150 off window tints.
I thought they were very hard to press for discounts, but then I met someone yesterday who got a 475 discount via free metallic paint which he haggled - so I felt bad lol.
but still happy - can't wait til finish work tommorow!
really want to stay loyal to honda but i had a look at the 2012 platinum lancer and it looks like good value
only thing i like about the new civic is probably the cluster and the key
I got Window Tint, Civic floor mats, Fog lights, full tank of petrol and NSW premium plates. Could have got fog lights or rear sensors - either. That's because I've been going back to the same dealer for my Hondas.
Problem with that is Lancer needs an update! Has been like that for a while and I dont think the update will be something that "wow" us, since there will be no Evo probably until 2017:
http://www.carsales.com.au/news/2012...ore-2017-29230
yeah the dash is certainly outdated but exterior still is worth keeping imo
Alrite there is a cost for everything but from a consumer point of view we dont want to pay full price and get something thats worth almost nothing to the dealer.
They cover all that cost in the RRP. Thats why when you go to the dealer the RRP price is not the same as what you see on paper. If I were to pay RRP I wouldnt want half a tank of petrol. Just being realistic.
Picked mine up last Saturday. Love it... no regrets, all I thought it would be and more. Great industrial design and workmanship. No matter what the reviews say, it's a great car.
Granted, it does't stand out in the crowd... but IMO that's a good thing.
L2R
agreed there! some dealers are tight and dont include mats or a tank of fuel., it all depends on the deal i guess, all my cars esp if they are sold close to rrp have mats and full tank on every contract.
but i have a mate who works for toyota and they dont even put mats and full tank in any of the cars unless its negotiated in the deal! no matter what price its sold at.
Im thinking of modify (exterior/interior accessories) my new civic in the future but i dont know any good honda mechanics in sydney beside the honda dealers. Any recommendations?

Has anybody seen the new civic with the 'door styling guards' fitted.
Do they spoil the appearance? Look dicky?
I know I can see them on the brochure/web site - they seem to be highly retouched.
I am contemplating getting them fitted to my car, just wanted to know what they look like in real life.
Any pics would be great.

Does the new civic run more quietly than the present one, road noise I mean it is a great problem most tyres do not get rid of the problem and also has the new one got a bit softer suspension to stop it jumping up and down!!
I cant compare with the previous model as i never owned one but the current civic road noise is really good, i believe they made the car more sound proof to road noise. Suspension is good, not like a bucking bull haha, didnt know the old civic behave that way if thats what ur saying.
Mine is a 2009 Sport!! noisy on any road except tarmac jumps around on any road except smooth ones!! Just tried a new Ford Focus what a difference on the same roads, quieter and smooth suspension looks like a swap is on the cards.
There will be a VTI from Thailand. It will have steel wheels, hud caps and no climate. Thailand is due to start exporting around June.
I just took delivery of a new 2012 Gen 9 Sport last week and I find it very quiet, can't comment if it's any quieter than the Gen 8 Sport as Iv'e never even been in a Gen 8 ... personally I do find the suspension a bit on the soft side and it is a bit "jittery" on the road .. but of course I am coming from an XR4 with modified suspension so pretty much any car is going to feel soft in the suspension to me until I got used to it.
I also looked at the new Focus Titanium before settling on the Honda ... the Focus is a nice car but two things put me off buying one .... firstly, being a Euro Ford the air-con is rubbish! .. Iv'e owned my XR4 which also comes from Germany (like the Focus) for over 4 years and the biggest let down of the whole car was the sub-standard air con performance, it's simply not up to our climate over here, fine for Euro conditions where 25C is considered a heatwave! .. but here in Oz ... it's next to useless! .. I spent a lot of money on my XR4 to get the air-con fixed up so it was at least bearable .. in stock form it's hopeless.
Secondly, it's a Ford ... nice enough cars ... BUT ... if anything goes wrong under warranty .. be prepared for a big fight to get anything fixed! .... personally I would have many sleepless nights just worrying about that nice 6 Speed DSG Powershift gearbox playing up! ... good luck to anyone getting that fixed under warranty!
Hopefully Honda have a little more foresight in regards to looking after their customers should warranty concerns arise .. time will tell (fingers crossed) ... this is my first ever Honda so I can only hope the reliability is as good as they say.
Congrats on the purchase! Do tell us some more review after you drive it for a while, and few pics of the car would be good!
Have you read on how HA taking care of people who complains about "pinging" issue on the Accord Euro CU2? First they said, its not a problem. Then they told you to change the fuel from E10 or 95 to 98. Then finally they have the fix for this problem that they said its not an issue. I think on this matter, there no much diff from how Ford handles the warranty.
I have a Mondeo which was made in Germany, it is a 2002 from NZ which was not imported into Oz the Air Con is great and can cool as much as any Oz made car.
New shape keeps growing on me. Take delivery of VTI-L next week.
Civic Si looks good in these shots from Motor Trend. It would great if Australia got this model.

Saw one today near kissing point road
Brown colour, sport model
The rear isn't bad
Saw 3 in the Gold Coast. Except the Eco Mode is there any other reason to upgrade from Fd1 vti-l MY10? I personally do not like the central dash compare to the old one :(
