DIY carbon fiber overlay

Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Here's a guide on how to carbon overlay parts of your car.

You will need the following parts -

Carbon cloth (twil looks best)
resin
acetone (if u want to clean your brushes - i use cheap ones and bin them)
plenty of latex gloves
mixing pots
measuring jug
syringe (for measuring hardner)
masking tape
Sharp scissors
Some stirrers - I use wooded spatulars
emery cloth
wet n dry 400grit to 1200 grit
polish

1) measure up your carbon cloth for the piece to be covered. Then using the masking tape tape up both sides where you intend to cut the cloth to prevent pulling the weave then cut through the middle of the tape -

2) Prep your piece to be overlayed - it should be black, if its not spray it up first so a colour doesnt show through the weave. It also needs a rub down with emery cloth.


3) brush a thin layer of resin mixed with 1% harder over the part to be overlayed then press the carbon cloth gently into place and tape up to the rear of the part to pull it into shape. You may need to change your gloves often so you dont pull the weave. Leave to dry for approx 45mins

4) Start building up thing layers of resin, you will need approx 5 layers to prevent breaking through to the cloth when sanding down. Each additional layer should be added after around 7 mins when the previous layer turns to a jelly consistency. You will now need to leave it for 1 week to fully cure -

5) you will now need to trim the excess cloth off - best tool I found was a dremmel -

6) Start sanding down. work your way from 400 grit up to 1200 grit wet and dry then finish with a good quality polish for a really nice shine -

Well you never know, anything can be defected.

Is it possible to get more information on resin/catalyst ratios?
Do you do this sort of thing a lot? end result looks great.

Nice one! I wonder if any panel beaters/detailing will do this for you or if they even know how.

how are you going to go about the bonnet? Do you have a roll which is as wide as the bonnet?

Cause if not you'll have to join them half way and it may look crap.

its not going to be 1 whole piece on the bonnet
noway you can get a sheet that big so ill be measuing up length ways
and because its twil carbon weave all ill be doing is stitching black cotton thread underneath the carbon material so it will look like one piece once completed
its very easy to much up once you buy some you'll no what i mean

not sure bout the ratios mate just try do your best
i practiced on a small block of wood couple times before
i actually started on my car
and i surgest that to everyone who wants to try it

its like the same as fiberglassing
so if you have done it before its always and advantage :)
you should be able to find some at your local fiberglass shop
just ask around that's the best way..

Im not an expert but during year 11 & 12 I did a fair bit of composite work (Carbon/Kevlar). I can't remember our exact ratios but we certainly knew when we had them wrong :p
Where abouts on the car does that piece actually go?

They go on the door panels these ones were for my mates car, but ill be doing my ej8 soon

did the carbon affect the fit of the panel?

i found a shop in seven hills for all the nsw members
but most fibreglassing shops should stock them
good thing to ring around thats what i did:)

1. was there any noticable warpage/shrinkage once the resin cured?

2. working on the same principle, if i inserted say a sheet of say baking paper in between the mould and the fibre cloth, do u think i'd be able to remove the cured fibre off the mould, or would the resin stick to the baking paper anyway?

yer mate you can buy the cf rolls from most fiberglassing shops
just ring around and you should find sum shops that sell it
ask for twill cf weave gets a better effect :)

when using a mould it's good to smooth the surface out and paint it or overlay a vinyl on it, then use a mould release wax before applying the carbon and resin.

is this diy your's ? its 2 years old.

u can get CF clotch from ebay.com. done it many times.
just cbf making a DIY on CF parts.
u should use Epoxy resin.
u can also get all this stuff in a victorian company called "solid solutions" tey hav a website too. google it.

and instead of using a dremmel.
i usually take my time doing things.
sowat i did was, i put a thin layer of resin. wait for it to be touch dry. and then trim it witha sharp blade. then once completely dry. use a nylon scotchbrite pad and degloss the suface and add more resin. and keep repeating untill th amount of layers u need.
then at the end sand down and finish in 800 grit (all this usually takes a week anyways)
then i take it to work and wack some 2K clear on it using 30% thinners so the clear sits flatter.

Tip: over large areas u need to use a vacuum(dont ask i neva done) because bubbles form. happen to me one time wen i was doing a CF insert where the intercooler sits on a S15 vertex front bar...

I Vacuum bagged a few things at school for a project

we end up vacuum bagging a seat that we hand moulded which was cf, and we vacuum bagged the whole shell for the car but that was epoxy not cf

Vacuum bagging is a bit harder as it needs to have constant suction for a good 4-5 hours off the top of my head... can't say the neighbors would appreciate a compressor going for that long

This is a great DIY well done bro. Seriously inspired me to CF my interior plastic bits.

oh and is it possible to do el cheapo and get glass weave sprayed black?? anyone know of any possible problems. hahaha :P just an idea.

Excellent looking result. Back to type of resin used - is "epoxy" a specific resin or does it just refer to one that is in 2 parts (i.e. resin and hardener/catalyst)? I believe "polyester" resin is mostly used with fibreglass. Were you using polyester resin?
