newb quest about 1st and 2nd gear

My DC5R only has 18,000 km on the odo

my quest:
1. when shifting into 1st gear from any higher gear, are we required to come to almost a complete stop before doing so? cos' i have been trying to shift into 1st gear from 2nd gear or 3rd gear but it seems doesnt allow me to do so, until i come to almost a complete stop. pulling off from the 2nd gear is not a problem at all.

2. when the car is not fully warmed up, i found that engaging the 2nd gear take a bit more effort compared to when the car is fully warmed up. but shifting to any other gears is not a problem.

i have already replaced the Gear Oil 2 weeks ago.

1. Most cars with synco-mesh don't like changing into 1st from a higher gear unless fully stopped, or close to it.

2. Common problem with the K-seires gearboxs is the knotchy gearbox (1st-2nd for Pre-facelift, 2nd-3rd for facelift). Only option you have is to either live with it, or get a new gearbox that dosn't have this problem.

Thanks Mate!!! gald to hear that nothing wrong with my Tranny/ gearbox... Yes mine is a pre-facelift DC5 R, so i guess it's normal :D

As bad as it sounds, yes its "normal".

Just keep using the OEM gearbox fluid, let the car warm up before you do any high RPM/quick shifts, and it'll be fine.

Another thing that works is when you change from 1st-2nd, push the gearstick to the left (When you are pushing it down), this seems to work for a fair few people.

thanks so much 45SET !!! Really appreciate your input. I read somewhere that our 1st and 2nd gear have 'triple cone' Synchro.... you know what this cone synchro are supposed to do? is this the reason for the difficult 2nd to 1st gear shifting you mention

From what ive been told downshifting to 1st gear is a bad idea. 1st gear is used as a push to get the car rolling. You have to slow down heaps to get it in gear. Go from 2nd to neutral if your stopping.

Have heard of it before, but don't know what it is (Or made up of) off the top of my head. Have a search on google for some information on what "triple cone" synchro mesh is.

yes, i think so.... well it's just that there is a lot of stop bump around my house. so i gotta slow down, but often i want to pull up from 1st gear, but often the car does not allow me(unless i have stopped or almost stopped), so i gotta pull up from the 2nd gear..

I have done a Google search , but nothing elaborate on that terms. anyway thanks heaps 45SET !!!;) I guess i am fine then

You should be able to clear humps and bumps (like in car parks) on 2nd gear, just go light on the clutch

If you really want to shift into 1st gear while still moving slowly, just clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out and give it a good rev then quickly clutch in and u should be able to put it into first. (Y)

that would work.
but i dont recommend doing this.
its not good for the gearbox at all.
if you want to screw your box.. go right ahead.
each to their own.

That doesn't screw your box as long as you rev it to the correct RPM before clutching in and shifting into 1st. That's called doubleclutching and everyone had to learn how to do it before synchros were introduced.

Once you know how a gearbox works and how the synchros work, double clutching makes sense on prolonging synchro life, just like how rev matching prolongs the life of a clutch.

guess i should have been more specific in what i said.
i didnt say it was bad while double clutching, he didnt say he tried double clutching to get it in. if he isnt double clutching and trying to get it in, i dont see how thats doing the box any good.

To support smoother shifting thru gears, even when cold, another debatable topic is the correct oil to use in honda gearboxes. If my memory serves me correct, the Mfactory site recommends a light viscosity transmission fluid.
Im sure there are a few decent brands of fully synthetic fluids on the market. Come Friday, i'll be putting a gearbox worth of Redline MTF in mine, i'll let u know if it helps...

Which Redline MTF are you using? If it is Shockproof Superlight, it is still 1 grade thicker than what Honda specifies. Honda uses 75w80, while Redline's thinnest Shockproof is 75w90.

I'll b using "Redline MTL" its a full synthetic and is slightly thinner then Hondas spec... 70W80.

Got car back, had a laugh, my poor mechanic gives me grief "i have to always jack your car up before i can get it on my hoist!" :p
With the new oil in the gearbox, its still a honda box, u still get the stubborn 1st-2nd change, but it has improved the abruptness of it, 25% improvement on shifting when cold, and now my LSD and new FD run the same percentage quieter. :thumbsup:
