I know this probably should be in technical but I want to know what ignition system people are using on the turbo engines,
so could everyone comment with their sort of setup,
what engine your using,
what power your putting down,
what your redline is and,
If you have had any problems

had problem with old one had issues, but was due to wear and tear. I'd recommend to get a new distributor from the states worth the piece of mind

Also FYI, people in US hits 500hp+ with stock ignition but with lower plug gap.
yeah stock is good but i wish i had the cash to go CDI, and get abit more power out of the car
so if money was no object what is the best ignition setup for a high revving turbo b16?
if your ECU is able to 4 direct coil + CDI
see below link he's running 4 coils but no CDI. The CDI can give a bigger spark yet again

As Limbo has said, if you had an ecu with 4 igntion outputs, a 4 channel cdi with a plug on coil system is the most powerful option, depending on your application, a single channel through the stock distributor do work well.

stock egnition is very good for low to med boost say 5-15psi. the internal coil can be a weak point but nothing a msd blaster coil and cap mod can't fix. I run stock ignition,ngk bkr8es gaped to .032"or.8mm ngk leads run 12psi and get 220wkw in my b16 turbo with 84mm bore
from my experience , OEM ignition parts are only as strong as their age and operating conditions.
IE excessive heat and age will kill them.
But , for the 10 + years that they last , they last fine no matter the application. Seen plenty of drag cars ion the states using standard ignition ( all parts)
If you've got the money, M&W ignition products is Australian made and quite good
If you want something thats good value and comes with a 3 year warranty, I recommend ICE ignition, something I don't recommend is MSD, I had nothing but badluck with their profucts.
Personally, am looking to either go coil on plug or single coil on CDI, pending cost of second option.

That should give you all the lightning you could ever need for the most revs you could push and the hardest fuel to ignite.
and cost you more then a late model second hand honda civic...do you mind me asking why bother? is that even road registrable? LOL maybe not...

Why bother? Because if you can have the best then why not.
ive got msd blaster with the modified dizzy cap. my dizzy runs cooler now. i run iriduim 1.1mm gap with turbo setup. and no problems. and especially now with new earth straps runs really well
Thats a fair question(y bother?), the build I'm currently doing seems not to have a budget as it started out to be a quick 5k restore now its 35-40k and climbing(hopefully not much more) the engine bay seems lik there is a black hole for cash. And as i have spent so much on the engine and gearing dont want something as small ignition system to fail and destroy everything and thats y i'm bothering. I would lik to do a single power run at 32psi and hopefully make 500+ hp
I see it like this. You see guys out there that spend a fortune on engine mods to make huge power and then when it comes to the smarts(ecu-ignition) they skimp out. WHY?
Spend the same sort of money you did on your engine and have a set up that will never give you an issue.
Get a motec or m&w cdi(4ch) and get some real cdi coils...mercury or the one T.Palo uses(cbr). You will never have an issue. Or you could just buy a complete cdi, coils and trigger kit from Tony.P
general reason most people stay on stock ignition is its reliable for most applications.
Alot of the cdis etc are hard to tune and can sometimes act up.
But that's not to say that they are able to make more power
Tune wise would be due to the tuner.
Reliability would be due to the brand and fitment.
Well I had a thread up before and asked what people thought was the best ecu for a turbo setup(money no object), and thats why i have this one to find out what power people are running with there setup.
i totally agree with dai-16t, I dont see the point in building an engine with the best of the best then run a stock ignition and ecu setup. I have come to the conclusion the the AEM ecu is best for me a they also have the engine position module so i can run a coil on plug setup too(my opinion).
Dude reliability wise i would research the aem stuff.
Look up T1 tony palo. he has a proven setup for hondas.
Well i have heard nothing bad abt the AEM except there is limited support for tuning in australia. Have you heard differently? and as everyone states it really comes down to the tuner and how well they know how to tune the ecu for the setup.
And i dont see y a big name band would bring out parts for a certain car and iit not be reliable.
Have read and seen first hand issues with product reliability. The first hand expirience was with cdi units(more than two).
At the end of the day it comes down to you. I have done it before....not listened to what people say or what I had read and learnt from my own mistakes.
In australia try to buy austalian. They make some of the best motorsport products in the world. Why would you stray?
I'm not saying i wont listen to people that have had exp with gear, and no havnt had any exp with AEM. The main reason for goin for a big name brand it has a ecu as well as an ignition system for the honda(assumed it would be ok).
I would gladly buy australian if someone makes a kit for the ignition thats made for the engine and not some backyard setup made from 30 different vehicles parts including boats that may work well on their car but im sure if my engine blows im sure no one will be saying they ****ed up and buying me a new engine (yes i no the big name wont either).
Having a look a T1 tony palo's website, might give him a call and see what he says.
