EK1 Stock Exhaust pipe Size + Twin Loop Muffler, Worth It?

Hey guys, bit of a noob to Honda's and have just recently bought an EK1 CXi as my second car.

Does anyone know the size of the EK1's stock exhaust piping? The reason i ask, is i'm planning on getting a cheapo ebay Mugen TwinLoop replica to tide me over until i have enough dosh to get a full I/H/E combo done on it, and wondering if it can be just welded on. Inlet is 2.5" and have no idea what stock piping is. Being on centerlink apprentice wages means i don't get a lot to play with, and have to do most things in incriments.

Also, is it worth buying a cheap rip off? Or should i just get a fart can from supercheap and have the blokes weld it on at an exhaust place? I'm just looking for alittle more noise but nothing like a weedwhacker.

i would get intake before any exhaust mods if you are on a budget

get a simota big tube intake off ebay for $120 and you will be happy with the sound it makes =D

if ur after a bit of sound, but not get epa'd, best bet is twin loop...
Not sure, but i think stock is 2inches.... so 2.25 would be next best... runnin 2.5 is bit over kill, unless u plan 2 turbo in the near future

A cheap exhaust will always sound cheap, so if u want a quality sound, better off saving a bit more an get like mugen, xforce, spoon etc... even 2nd hand 1's are better than that cheap tin sound
If u do go for the ebay, better off getting a full axle back or cat-back system, rather than cut an paste job, that way it flows better, an looks hell lot cleaner...

Dont expect any major power increase, response yes, power, no....

Yeah, i'm aware of the tinny sounds and whatnot, but also just want it for looks aswell, until i have the money to get a decent xforce or mugen full system. As for intake, already have a big tube and still looking for a bit more sound without being defectable haha.

Stock piping diameter is 1 and three-quarter inch.

Don't go any bigger than 2 inch unless ur running forced induction else you'll lose too much back pressure and the thing will just 'bog' when you put ur foot down

funny how people say when u put on a bigger exhaust system that they'll bog down, thats a load of rubbish, its more so to do with the way the headers flow.... im running a 2.5 cat back mandrel bent, as im goin turbo the d16 next year, and honestly i cant feel the difference... still feels like the same ol d16 as when it was stock. yes its over kill on a stock d16, but i still love the sound it puts out :D

yep, there's nothing stopping you going bigger than 2 inch but it'll also make the exhaust 'drone' which will make your car sound like a 'fart can' - which is cool if that's what you want. But Honda's should have a nice deep note... Sharing my personal experience I had a full exhaust fitted at Hi-Tech Mufflers in Darlinghurst - who design and dyno test all their products at their factory in Bathurst - and their professional recommendation for a stock 1.6L was 2 inch piping. 2.5 inch is cool for forced induction.

I don't know the benefits on twin loops etc - but IMHO I think you're better to save up a little more and get a straight through muffler fitted at your local exhaust shop - I'm sure it wouldn't be anymore than $100 or so installed.

agreed, 2 inch is the way to go.... not doubting u man, but as i said, 2.5 didn't make much difference in terms of drive-ability, but in terms of sound, id say its more so the way its design that factors into the sound it makes... such as mufflers, resonators, headers etc.... reason why u say farty, is cause a lot of the cheaper systems well are cheap, cheap material, poorly designed mufflers etc.. you pay for what you get for i guess...

Well as i said i'm also just looking for some looks aswell. Car is completely bog standard apart from the intake. Has ugly arse clip on hubcaps, and really can't afford rims atm, so was thinking of just ripping them off and spray painting the stockies black for the time being haha.

The replica twin loop i'm looking at is $109, and the local exhaust shop said it shouldn't be anymore than $70-$80 installed. That sounds fairly good to me. Specs of the muffler are 2.5" inlet, mugen twin loop design, 4" chrome tip. Not a cannon, it looks nice and slick, and 4" is only 0.5" bigger than an XForce S10 tip.

I've considered forking out extra money for a full exhaust system, but i just cant justify it as i am thoroughly looking into doing a B16B swap from an EK9 Half Cut sometime in the future. And if the stock piping is as near as makes no difference to 2" already, what's the point in forking out for bugger all gain. I'd rather get decent job on a nice quiet aftermarket muffler instead of wasting $$$ on a chrome system where it's just gonna get dirty anyway (nice and dusty roads where i live).

Anyway, i'll probably end up going the ebay muffler. Looks good, and if reviews are anything to go buy (lulz, probably not haha) then it seems to be of decent quality.

You guys had any experience with engine swaps and stuff? Would love to hear some stuff on that subject!

Yep, if ur looking to do an engine swap then good to save your pennies for that, but I'm clueless in that area lolz :-)

But nice to hear someone putting a muffler on and not a cannon lol - and 4 inch in great for the tip. I got a 4inch angle tip on my EK sedan and I agree I think it looks slick and not too 'aftermarket' with a cannon

If you really want a twin loop then go for it mate. Obviously it'll cost a bit more than what the exhaust shop quoted you - plus you need to pay for shipping and installation once you get it. Bang for buck the cheaper option is to go with exhaust ship IMO - but a twin loop does look pretty cool... (youtube it for sounds clips :-D) what's the idea of the twin loop anyway?

Thanks mate - yeh, it's a Hi-Tech sports muffler (http://www.hitechmufflers.com.au/home.php) it was a lil expensive $350 installed, but cause i only drive the car on weekends i wanted something that was going to last & not rust out cause doesn't get a run everyday - so came with 10 year warranty + they claim all their mufflers are proven dyno tested...

Really depends on ur budget tho, next time (if there is one lol) i would have saved up more and just gone for the full system rather than go back again... oh well, live and learn. But I'm very happy with it, sounds nice and deep now with hi-flo cat and 2 inch piping back to muffler :-)

Ah fair cop. Yeah, i've only got about $120 or so to play with each fortnight after bills and stuff. So i'll probably grab that muffler and get it put on the following fortnight. I have no worries waiting =)

Get the ebay one and report back and tell us how it sounds! =D

Resurrecting an older thread, but thought it would be better than starting another.

I'm in the same boat as OP was (apprentice wage, only have a EK1 D16Y4) & don't see the point in doing the whole lot considering there be little to no power increase (which would even be pointless on a d16y4) & am only after a 'better' sound. My EK is just for show. Did the OP ever get around to this? Or has anyone done this since? :)

Got a replica twinloop on my ek. It does give it a much deeper tone than the stock pea shooter and it looks nice too. Its not even close to 'tinny' as brought up in discussion..

while everyones talking bout d16 exhaust se ups i am curious to know whats d best set up for my ek1, i currently have a DIY cold air intake that uses the original stock box but has the pod filter sitting inside, i also have 4-2-1 extractors but the rest of the exhaudt is all stock.

i like it how it sounds atm because its all engine noise and sound nice when it opens up, kinda like a wannabe v-tec but unique,

i guess the question is am i restricting the motor by leaving the stock muffler on?

should i change it to increase flow or increase 1hp.lol

maybe just get a bigger tip... but imagine if you could make your exhaust snap, crakle and pop - best of both worlds then :D

yeh i do admit i miss hearing the exhaust, farty or not, i was thinking of just getting a nice tip got quoted $280 from axel back at carline mufflers, a bit expensive i remember paying 300 for cat back on my old crx.

I know you're on a budget but you asked for a 'good' one so I can recommend Hitech Mufflers - I got mine with a catco usa high-flo cat, 2 inch s/s piping and muffler - but they might be able to show you some other options as well... I'm sure they are heaps of muffler shops out there...

hitec looks like there good quality but they work on Ferraris, Lamborghinis and other exotics and then there gonna have this little sohc civic rock up looking for performance hahaha

As an update for future reference, I did this today. Recieved eBay replica twin loop during the week & had it fitted about an hour ago. Just did an axle-back on it. Fits perfect under the EK (this was a hatchback fyi). However, the one I got had a 4" cannon-style tip on it which turned out to be MASSIVE. We tried cutting the tip back as far as possible without riksing cracking it, but it was still just too wide & long & even if we got it fitted it would look ridiculous. So I ended buying a smaller 3.5" angled tip
from the guys who fitted the muffler. Looks like Alvis' tip:

I'm planning to go with this universal twin loop for my ek sedan also (since finding an OBX twin loop with 2.5" inlet pipe seemed rather hard).

Did you have to custom any piping or anything at all? and how much did the job cost Trance?

Hey guys, sorry for delay on reply.

Been meaning to do a clip of how it sounds, just havent got around to it with work, gf etc etc.

Also, the job cost me $190 all up. $70 of that was for a replacement tip.

I had the bloke keep the stock muffler & piping intact as a 'just in case' (as this is sort of an experiment with an ebay replica).

The bloke who did the job cut the stock exhaust off at the flange next to the rear axle, as it would have been a b*tch to try and fabricate a new flange to fit. He had to make a new pipe from the flange to the back of the muffler, just measured up a rough length then used trial and error to work out how to bend it to fit nicely (which he did exceedingly well). The pipe he used was same size as stock (1.75") so it would fit nicely on the stock flange, then just widened a few centimetres of the muffler end of the pipe so it would fit nicely on the muffler's 2.5" inlet, then obviously just welded it all together once it was all lined up nicely.

As I said previously, the tip that comes with the muffler is far too long & wide for a Civic, would have gone nicely on a Skyline or something, though. We tried cutting the tip back, but it just wouldn't work & would look ridiculous. In hindsight, it would have been wise for me to source a new tip myself (instead of having to pay them $70 for one of theirs), but I'm overall happy with how it sits.

Still sounds good to this day & haven't seen or heard anything odd from it. Only thing I have noticed is, the warmer the piping gets, the louder the exhaust gets. Not sure if this is common with aftermarket 'sports' mufflers, as I've never owned a car with one before (owned a '91 Laser previously). As an example of what I mean, if I drive the car early in the morning to work, it's cold outside, the car is obviously cold, I can't even hear the exhaust from inside the cabin with the windows up, but by the time I get to work (45 mins later), I can hear the exhaust inside the cabin. But as I've mentioned, it's not loud, it's a nice, subtle growl.

But yep, I notice the same with my Civic (again, never had a car with an exhaust before) especially on a drive to Sydney - once it heats up get more of that snap, pop and crackle on up changes.

And don't know if it's just my car - but after it's warmed up at normal engine revs, it just needs one good rev and then she's on song the whole trip...

the reason they cut your flange as its easier for them to just add a shit 2 bolt flange

so why wouldnt you just add a tip to your oem exhaust ...........if you werent after power go figure

I was also half expecting fart noise, and if that were the case, the joke would have been on me. But I tried something different that didn't have any guarantee's it would sound any good, but it does. Sure, would sound a bit better with headers, full cat back etc. but considering there would also be no gain at all from that on a stock d16y4, that would be an even bigger waste of money, wouldn't it?

And now I'm sharing my experience with OzHonda in case anyone else ends up in the same boat as I (low budget, not looking for power gains, aesthetic mods only - yes this includes noise). If you haven't tried it, don't bag it.
