B20vtec questions.

Hi all,

It's coming up time that i'm looking to build a b20.

I'm just collecting up a list of parts at the moment.
I currently own a vtir integra + bolt on's so i'm just looking at engine parts.

Here's a list of parts I think i'll need?
b20 block (b20b or b20z ?)
Arp rod bolts
New timing belt (b18? since i'm using vtir head)
Vtec conversion kit
Computer+tune (not sure what computer)

I'm also going to rebuild it so it's a fresh motor (0km)
So i'd be including:
Bearings
Pistons
Full gasket kit

Since i'll be using stock vtir cams/head what pistons should I be using?

Also reuseable parts from my current engine?
Head assembly
Water & Oil pump

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Stock pistons are fine but if you are going to take them out you might aswell notch them to be safe , or buy some cheap RS machines
If your going to keep the stock pistons then make sure you get the B20B8 with PHK written on the intake manifold cover, due to the better compression ratio
Everything seems to be right except you forgot breather kit. Computer there are many options, i would go for a hondata s200 pretty cheap these days.

Get type r water and oil pump

I am very keen on watching this as i am in the same position. Aren't the water and oil pumps the same for the b18c2 and c7??? So you may be able to reuse them, but they are not that expensive to get new ones so it may be good to just get them for a bit of extra security.

is there an "off the shelf" breather kit you can buy specifically or is it custom fabricated?

you can buy the ENDYN kit

but its not nesessary. what you will need is
2 X prelude fitting for the back of the block (ill try get the part numbers)
2 X long hoses with clamps for each end
and can get an breather can with two ports off ebay or source one from somewere

Late model b20vtec (B8) has the same oil pump as type R. Seems like you have the list sorted.

What's the compression ratio going to be with stock pistons (b20b8 and stock b18c2 head)?
I'm happy to get aftermarket pistons if needed to bump up comp (11-1 ish) that's no problem with me, aslong as I don't have valve to piston problems.

B20's don't come with breather kits do they? I'm sure I can knock one up easy enough.

Also if i didn't get the golden eagle kit (we can make the braided lines+fittings ourselfs) what headgasket would I be using? b20? I realise i'll need to enlarge some holes on it slightly.

you can buy the gasket on its own, heaps of kits out there now, the compression ratio would just be over 10:+

From what i've read I could use itr Rs machine pistons? Will I need to machine these though? I'm presuming these will bump up the comp abit more aswell?

See now i'm confused.
From everywhere i've read it's all said to use a b20 one and i'll have to enlarge the dowel pin holes.

well from what ive read the b20 non vtec head gasket covers the holes while the actual vtec head gasket doesnt. there was a graph lil foy let me get it for you 1 sec.

in essence you are correct by making some holes but i believe if you use the vtec gasket obv you wouldnt need to cut anything and its already there.

awesome, thanks for that. also, kinda noob question, are the standard B20 rods okay to use with the RS Machine pistons?

yes it will be fine and holes wont be blocked partially :)

yes standard b20 rods okay to use, they are good for about 350-400 hp before consider upgrading , the weak point is the rod bolts which surely need to be replaced as they are the same bolts used in D series engines.

you can get golden eagle vtec head gasket. they use OEM gasket and then bore it for you, if thats what you want. they also enlarge other holes from the oem gasket. i have one, and it came in with oem part number.

also a question, sorry foy may aswell ask here instead of making new thread.

Where'd you get the seperate head gasket from Ric?
You doing b20 aswell? Have to come check your car out one day soon :)

you can buy them seperate from golden eagle im pretty sure, i got mine from a member on here. the one i got is 84.5mm, so i will loose a bit of compression im told. dosnt bother me too much.
are you looking at golden eagle or full race vtec kit? i will be going full race kit, cause i dont want to use the oil sandwich plate cause more of a chance to have leaks imo.
yeh im doing a B20 as well, slowly slowly.

I'm going to diy the oil lines, including braided lines, t pieces and stuff it's going to cost me sfa.
I'll have to talk to a GE supplier and see if they can get one.

Right now i'm just pricing up how much it'll cost for the b20, dad and I can get the current b18c2 fully rebuilt (we'll do assembly work as you know) for around 2grand total.
So it may be worth the little extra for a b20 :)

awsome that you do most of the work, i wanna do most my self as well. if not i know an engine builder that has experience in hondas. yeh im still budgeting my build at the moment. im not going all out, but will only be using quality stuff.

what are you gonna do about the PCV system? i was thinking running a oil catch can between the PCV and intake arm, and a breather kit for the block since i have read that the B20 has troubles with block pressures.

na im back from up north now, was great to see more of qld but. money was sick :)

Ill probably just do as gsi_psi suggested with the prelude fittings and ill get a catch can. If you can do diy stuff, why not.
And yeah, building ourselves will save a chunk of money.

Its worth it man, with B20 as soon as you take off you will feel the difference, ive been in many B18C ,B16A you cant feel the vtec like you can with a B20.

hmm 2g for a b20 it might be able to be done.. if you got a ecu already and headers etc etc.

are you going to be using apr main studs and rod bolts?

Probably reusing oem main studs but yes arp rodbolts and I will get the rod/bearing closed and honed.
