Differential snap but not blown?

Hey guys. Yesterday after hearing a ticking from diff when wheels where rolling, my diff went whilst reversing out of Coles carpark. The dff is still physically in tact. No oil has leaked and the housing isn't cracked or anything. When in gear and off clutch the car just revs and i tink tunk sound comes from the diff as though there is a chunk of metal rolling around in there. The sound is also there when the car is idling in neutral. Can somebody tell me where the problem is exactly? And what needs the be changed. Thanks.

from the sounds your describing i think its the crown and pinion. mine sounded exactly the same when i broke it. i would be the teeth inside the diff housing thats why theres no visibal signs

Same here mate, Mine had the same noise.

drain the fluid

i just got told my pinion sumthing in my diff is gone by honda. that it was dieing slowly. mine makes a metal touching metal ssssss noise. i changed oil and made no difference. honda quoted me $2500 for a dif rebuild.

not having much luck are you mate.

fortunately a Kaaz or similar should only cost about 1k.

haha oh well. the LSD works fine. they said keep driving it n just wait till it gets worse coz there isnt much i can do about it atm. they said it will last still quite a few months unless i do epic clutch dumps.

Why would I pay 1g. They got crown and linings for 500US plus postage...



S2on20 and s2kjn are your cars lowered or on bigger rims..? Mine where both. I had 19s with Showa coilovers lowered about an inch and half from stock. With no spacers..

His talking about the LSD unit the crown and pinion is the gear pieces.


Drain the fluid to see if any metal chunks come out it will give you an idea

stop doing skids

if your car has absolutely no drive, it could be a inner CV on one of your drive shafts? Either way i'd hate to be in your shoes right now.

mmmmmm, wow.. Sh#T, I wrote it and still went on blind.. The diff gets no movement when in neutral and stationary...? I assumed after replies that there must be something going on.. Do you have any ideas on what i can be..?

That said, I am having my diff rebuilt and reinforced. Meantime I'm running my spare diff. When I get my reinforced diff back my spare will be for sale. Good thing is the spare is in perfect condition and can be tested whilst it's still in my car.

If you hear it when the car is in neutral then it has to be something forward of the transmission input shaft. If it doesn't change when you push the clutch down or let it out (still in neutral) then it's not the clutch or input shaft bearing.

All that really leaves is the engine.

In neutral, idling, does the sound get faster with more revs? If so, I expect its bearing damage in the engine.

That said, Stevharr had a ticking sound in the engine. Was about to pull the bottom end apart when we worked out it was the air conditioner compressor. Bearing was stuffed. We just swapped out the compressor.

I know you think it's coming from the rear but you really need to get a second opinion from someone standing outside the car. I thought my transmission output shaft bearing had gone so rebuilt it, only to discover it was my diff (hence the rebuild). It could be your valves are out of adjustment from what you've told us.

Hey man. I worked out. I believe the cvs.. Well actually just the right (driver) cv. It just keep ls turning. The noise is coming from there.. The left seems fine.. But yea. It keeps spinning in neutral too. Is that normal when cv snaps?

In neutral? Not really. I guess there could be some drag through the gearbox but the whole idea of neutral is that there is no connection between the input and output shafts of the gearbox.

But, if you see you right CV cup spinning and your wheels are not turning then the tripod is blown.

Yea. And that sits in the cv joint axle? So a new cv joint n axle will be all I need. While I'm at it I will most probably replace both, and raise the car slightly higher. Do you know the cause of this auss2000?

I know what caused mine. Launching off the lights and getting wheel hop.

I bought a used set of axles and swapped them myself.

VeyYzZii - Yes my car was lowered with kings when my crown & pinion made the same noise you descrive (now I have coils :) )but no spacers either. I also heard that diff problems with the S are related to them being lowered. I guess it'd be wise if I got spacers then huh!

Spacers don't actually 'fix' the problem with lowering. They just move the wear point a little. So if you're lowered and got the clicks, swap your CVs left to right. When it comes back again, install spacers. When it comes back again you can swap the CV right to left.

This should give you enough time to realise that 'da slamd' look really ain't worth it

Buy EBAY shafts, they come with warranty and work fine. Cheaper than $750+ each from HONDA.

EBAY don't make shafts. EBAY is an auction website.

Yea... I think its the hub.. Not CV.. From Diff, to CV, now the Hub.. I guess hub is better then cv or diff..?

It gave up when i was reversing at franklins.. But i believe the problem started prior to that, whilst i was overtaking grandma..

I think it's officially called the spindle but it's the end of the axle. I have a spare if you need it.

It's the bit in box 5, but only the left most bit.

Waa?? I thought that was the ouboard boot & joint & clamp in box 5?

That's an unusual breakage, suprised it broke there rather than an inboard joint.

i dont do skids or anything. sometimes the back comes out a bit in the wet but thats coz the tyres are bald. lol

Just gotta get it off the shaft, unless you're local, in which case you can have the shaft as well.

Hey aus. The mechanic said its the CV thats snapped. Im not to sure i could trust him. He said he wont install a used CV, only the CV that he buys, otherwise he wont install..

There's no longer any mystery about what part has snapped. It's just a matter of what you're going to do about it. Personally I'd source an outer CV and do the work myself. YMMV.

Your probably right. Thats most efficient way to do it. I like the YMMV at the end though, im good with mechanics, but dont wanna f&ck anything up at this stage as i will need a car for the weekend.. I will probably sus out a cv, or hopefully a outer CV and tell the bloke to SDFU and fit it in..

VeYzZii picked the parts up from my place today. Sorry I wasn't there and thanks for leaving the money.

Good luck with the install. The only problem I can imagine might be getting the broken spline out of the hub. A big hammer should help. ;)

Make sure to pack the CV with plenty of grease. I cleaned out the old grease with degreaser to inspect.

I have a hilti drill that sorta acts like a jack hammer.. Gave it a couple hits with that and its pushed its way out !! :)
