Posting / Forum Etiquette

Just a quick reminder that all though this is 'the internet', that some eqiquette is required when posting.

There have been some complaints against users and it should be noted that we will no longer tolerate deliberate attacks or belittling of members. We want to promote a friendly and helpful atmosphere on the site and anyone who cannot conform with this requirement will be forced to leave.

Moderators are aware of this and will be issuing infractions as required (especially for those with a previous history; yes we keep track).

would there be an standard of some sort to set the benchmark?
wouldn't want to have another vendetta due to someone getting offended with sarcasm.

although arguments are unavoidable, promoting a friendly and helpful atmosphere on the site is always good thing.

yeah, i think there needs to be some boundaries outlined.
i dont see an issue when sarcasm, when some posts/threads deserve a sarcastic reply.

Obviously some heated debate, sarcasm etc will arise on a big forum like this when we cover a lot of topics and some of our members are both old heads or total noobs. However you need to know where to draw the line. You can be helpful, constructive, and even critical without being rude and offensive, or ganging up on others. This is not normally a problem however there have lately been multiple complaints from various members regarding a select few, therefore we have decided to give both private and public warnings to ensure everybody feels welcome on OH and understands the viewpoint of the moderator team.

If you're mature at all then you should know where the line is drawn, you don't need the most amazing of moral compasses to figure that out. Just be nice!

The important points are outlined in OH's terms and conditions. As for figuring out how to conduct yourself by those points (or some grey areas) you should be able to manage that individually. It's not hard to show a little respect and it makes everybody else happy!

I've seen vendettas, and a number of members on this forum have either replicated or initiated the very behaviours that they themselves complained about previously. However there will be no vendetta from the moderator team - we will endeavour to treat each member fairly and objectively with an aim to uphold the values of the forum and promote community involvement and general happiness. Hopefully everybody can be apart of that :)

Unfortunately new users not searching and always asking the same question is a common issue and hard to deal with. In this case best is just not to reply. When he/she doesn't get any replies it might make them think again.

There are a select few who go out of their way to be rude. We won't accept it anymore no matter how long you have been on the forums.

Noone else is finding it hillarious the amount of deleted posts in this thread?

Enforcing rules of conduct on people is always a difficult task, and expecting everyone to adhere to them is probably unachievable.
As long as everyone can be happy to coexist, despite the 'heated fun' that sometimes starts up.. I'm sure we'll all be alright.

not just helping leechers e.g. join to sell, join to get some info and never contribute. after all who wants to work for peanuts, you get tired and feel used if this happens on constant basis.

if everyone put some effort in helping others, the helper helping the helpee vice versa.
it would be forum utopia.

i actually read all the rules before i posted back in 06 and i dont see you post up to answer posts from members?
i use google all the time, if the results direct me to ozhonda then i read on ozhonda.
if it directs me to SAU, then i read on SAU.

i get knowledge, i frequent on ozhonda so when members ask and i post what i learnt through google.
broaden your search. dont just search on ozhonda.

Agree. The internet is full of people asking stupid questions. Why ? Everyone has to start researching somewhere. We have to all accept that this is a cycle that ALL people go through and will always happen on internet forums.
What we are trying to achieve is to stamp down you angry kents and ****ing relax.
People dont search...we have the noob section for this. You dont like someones noob post or response - report it to a mod and we will relocate it ( if applicable ) to the noob forum or lock it down.

I don't own a honda and haven't owned one for like 3 years now, I've been a member since December 04 and i've paid my dues, i'm very behind on my honda knowledge and I honestly can say I wouldn't be able to help anyone out..

I'm a member of jdmst, rexnet, ozevo, sau, AE, boostcruising, supra forums, and a few more, ozhonda is one of if not the most active forum i frequent, many other forums don't have the member base we do here, I like this forum and don't want to see it turn into the likes of boostcruising where noobs post once, get flamed and never return.. ozhonda did alot for me, put me in touch with some good people, people i'm still friends with now even though I'm out of the honda scene, it's a good forum, and i've had some good laughs on here!

Benni, i'm still a douche noob, I've asked you some pretty dumb questions, but **** if you don't ask you won't ever no.. but I'll never flame noobs because I was once a forum noob like them and I no I got flamed once on BC and never returned.. that's how u lose members!

We have a search function, it should be used

There's a lot to be gained from calling a mechanic, googling, trying the OH search engine etc. But the best advice comes from this community. If I need to know something I try to search here but it's hard to find the exact answer or key words sometimes.

Old heads need to realize that they are valued to the point that a noob wants to turn to them first for the best anecdotal information. Don't turn these people away! OH is a resource for all and should be used preferentially to google IMO.

The very lightheartedness you speak of is what's at stake when people choose to disrespect one another.

everyone legit needs to lighten up, forums don't have to be a place where people dread to communicate with one another because they're scared they're going to get hated on. But for those who do 'troll' (ohsc) it's all in good faith, and although newcomers aren't familiar with it it's not hard to pick up legit information from a group of people just having a laugh and a good time.

All in all, if you take away all the trolling attempts, everyone here displays courtesy to one another in their own way, and majority of us will give a good lot of useful information in the end.

And it's not like you always did your own research either mate. You yourself have asked some simple questions that could have been 'googled' or addressed to a proper mechanic. Yet you chose to post here on OH first, and were given good/clean advice without being told to GTFO or similar.

there is no real account - this is the MAIN and only account - i have been a guest in OH for many years and i read up articles, DIY, and obtain helpful information when i needed help and the amount of trollers and spam i see is just tremendous - and i was only a guest.

i have mates who are old timers in OH, and they tell me the same, most of them dont even log on anymore due to the amount of crap going on.

so hence why i joined to help others who are in need and state my rights when required.

but most of all, im here to have fun, have a bit of a laugh at funny gif pics and help out others.

People asking about prices deserve a serving.

at the end of the day this is a community... not in the true sense of what the word used to mean, but what it means today, in a world where social interactions seems to be driven by text rather that speaking to someone face to face... as sad as that is it's true.

Let me pose a question... if you were amongst a group of associates, in the world as it should be, face to face, would you smash them with a stupid sarcastic comment when they ask a question for help? you may once or twice, but after a while that there will be consequences and repercussions...

at the end of the day this IS a community... and there are norms and rules... giving people a hard time everytime they attempt to seek help from a group of people who they know CAN help is not acceptible.

I'm all for light hearted, but there are limits... there's a huge depth of knowledge in our membership here and for the most part it works great, but no one has any right to put conditions (such as using the search button before you post) on being a helpful member of this community, this issue has been around since day dot... at the end of the day we are here to enjoy what we are passionate about

and if this little internet world and its traits are too much for you to handle, then maybe you need to consider new hobbies...

Google won't always give you the best answer, nor will a mechanic give you the most accurate price. You can easily be scammed or taken advantage of.

Personally I think a community like OzHonda which has a depth of experience is a great place to ask for help for the reasons mentioned above.

Google has given the best answers I've ever needed.

It takes longer than hitting enter and first result, might be an hour of going through links etc, but I guarantee you'd find an answer quicker than you would asking it here.

As for asking on here rather than asking a mechanic, because they rip people off, and don't give accurate prices that's a cop out. How can someone on ozhonda give a price when they aren't a mechanic? Do you go to the doctor, then go to another because you don't believe him? No, because its his job.

There's no point asking a mechanic a question, then coming back to ozhonda and asking. You do a search, not just here, but on google, get some info and a few causes, then call up a few mechanics with that info, and get quotes on repair prices.

The doctor and mechanic analogy is stupid.

On here,although not being all mechanics we can post what price we may have paid for the given service/item.So the OP can go by averages if they wish.

Here's an average for you.

Mechanics charge between 70 and 110 an hour for labour. 90% of them also have a program called "auto service quote" where all they need to do is punch in what's needing to be done and it'll give them a figure of how many hours it should take. There's no guess work involved.

They won't charge more than retail for parts. So ring some parts stores and get a quote on the parts you need. Even better if you get them at a cheaper price.

Its really not hard just to make some calls and do the ground work after you get some advice about what may be the problem.

I'm glad to hear your googling experience has been so fruitful, but let's not for one moment pretend it's the be-all and end-all of information, whether it's price related or not. Even you yourself have resorted to OzHonda for assistance from time to time. Is that because your own guarantee of finding answers on google faster than OH failed? And where do you draw the line and say somebody should have googled it? If you remove a grain of sand from a heap, is it still a heap? When does it cease to be a heap? At one grain? See the pointlessness of dozens of people all trying individually to determine at what point another member should or should not resort to the forum for help?

This is why wynnode is giving everybody a friendly warning to adhere to basic etiquette. If you're not smart enough to realise where the line is drawn then it will be drawn for you in the form on an infraction. If you don't like it, just leave. But don't think you can harass other members because YOU have decided they have no right to post certain questions or information.
I'm not saying you specifically are a culprit mate. You're a helpful member! I am just entertaining your arguments, and honestly we could argue all day about what is and isn't appropriate enough to be forum-material. However you don't make that decision and if you try to enforce your own beliefs on other members you need to do so with respect and reason. The forum is constantly re-structured and monitored to keep it as tidy as possible, so all you need to do is participate in the sections that interest you. Stay away from the 'Noob' or the 'How much for/to' sections if it gives you a headache - but it's here to help.


And your reference to doctors is ridiculous to a person who works in a hospital like myself. I do think that a community this large should be able to confirm or disprove some information or quotes from our own past personal experiences. I have seen mechanics blatantly try to rip people off and I'm glad some people have asked me for my opinion. A tyre shop once tried to charge my GF $880 for four new 15" tyres on her Corolla. It does happen sometimes, not everybody is well-intended.
And yes, I recommend EVERYBODY get second medical opinions (in terms of seeing another doctor) if they are concerned about their initial diagnosis or treatment plan. Doctors are often wrong, and seldom work alone to begin with (more like teams of 4-6 seniors, plus juniors and intermediates, allied health, nursing staff etc). Or maybe we should all just jump on google and self-diagnose by your theory? Do you have any idea how ludicrous that concept is at the end of the day?
