Making S2000 diffs stronger

We're presently working on making the S2K diff strong. While our natural tendency is to focus on the gears, considering our shot peening and ISF machines, we're working on the housing because that seems to be where the problem lays.

I think it will be clear to the reader that this is all untested, and will need testing before our solution is put to market, but just thought S2000 fans and owners may be interested in some of our inner workings...

yes....... finally.

the diff is always my concern and my reason not to mod my S2000 as much as i would like to.

Yeah I get the impression a few S2K owners are in the same boat as you. What have you got planned if you were able to get a diff that would stay together?

if this will allow me to drift ill snap one of these up if its not too pricey

Yeah that will be the big test!

I doubt the mod itself will run too expensive but would usually happen in the process of a complete rebuild I would have thought. All theoretical at this stage...

Slowly moving ahead with this project. We've just shot peened and ISF'd the new 4.77 gear set.

How u guys going with case srengthening???

i realise i'm stating the obvious, but have you looked into the puddymod diffs...for ideas/comparison or something? they've got very good reputation.

edit: it's about time someone in aus starting looking into s2k diffs. thanks for that. i personally have never had any issues, but if i was planning on modding my car or using it far more...spiritedly...i would want to do something about the diff before anything happened to it, rather than after. in saying that, after reading your article none of the current options you discussed (comptech etc.) caught my attention as much as puddymod's service so you might want to look at that.

Yeah still looking into it. We've done some work on the case today, just making tooling and jigs.

Yeah we've had a close look at puddymod. Here's what we've found:
- From what I understand, he uses a comptech reinforced case. That's why I only listed comptech as the case strengthening option.
- The solid pinion spacer is nothing new but certainly works. We offer this mod already for any diff we do - many diff specialists could, too.
- He cryo-treats gears and some other components. We've got reservations about this process. I am not a metallurgist and there's stacks of debate about how good/worthwhile/counter-intuitive this process is, so I'll leave it at that. Thing is, you don't find the same debate around the technology we use, namely shot peening and ISF/REM. The reason for this is there is an enormous body of scientific evidence proving the benefits of both of these processes - not so for cryo treatment.
- He uses black phosphate treatment on the bearing caps. We don't know whether this does anything independently from the other mods.
- He very carefully assembles the diffs to exacting preloads. I honestly think this is where his excellent reputation comes from. He clearly does very good work. We seek to do the same thing.
- He uses new fasteners. Not a bad idea if you want to spend a little extra dough.

wow, so i was stating the obvious :P. just to be clear, you've got my full support i just didn't know whether you were aware of his service or not. hey, maybe if i make a little money and you sort everything out you'll have a future customer :). but pleeeeease be competitive with pricing, i'm sick of the US getting everything cheaper :P.
