What to do with the ED??

ok heres the situation....

i have a 1989 honda civic GL (ED) hatchback and it has the d15b4 motor. the motor is blowing alot of smoke and is using oil just as often and it uses fuel.... 400ks to a litre of oil... i took it to my mechanic today and he told me that it needs rings and bearings? and that that is to cost around the 1k mark.

he also said that it could work out cheaper to put another motor in (just the d15b4 as i cant afford an efi conversion) what do you think would be a better option? (i rekon id have to source the d15b4 from the mainland as there arent many about in hobart.)

couldnt you source a d16y4 out of a ek and stick that in? they can be found for a 500 odd$ i saw one going for.

d15b4 will be cheap

the gl is carby, so you'd have to change alot of crap before you put in a efi motor.

Depends if you have another car to drive around in, and thus make this one your project car?

If not, then the easiest and cheapest is to simply buy another "low-key" D15B4 and swap 'em over.

Easy engine to rebuild yourself if you know what you are doing... 1K would get you parts/machining costs.

hmm... i have thought about getting an efi motor and wacking that in. but to change all the shit over its just not worth it, i had a quote of 3500 drive in drive out conversion but thats if i supply the motor, ahh the joys of living in tasmania :) . i need it off the road for as little time as possible cos im not a fan of public transport and im young so i need my wheels :P the idea at the top of the list atm would proabably be to pay the 1k and get the rings and bearings done only because i dont want to be buying a motor that i dont know the history of... cos i could just be buying into the same trouble?

true. but how with i kno im not buying a car thats got the same prob? is there wreckers on the mainland that sell d15b4s? my motor has done 250,xxx ks btw

Yup this is what i did 2 days ago... Same car as you (Sedan though), same engine... Picked one up for $300 and put it in for $300... took 3 days

But seeing ur in Tassie might be a bit more to it...

might be cheaper, take your car to sydney via boat.
or melb, and get it done here?

yea he did but it has overheated and blown a head gasket and i dont wanna put a motor in that has problems :S
