whats the best sussy setup i can get for my budget? ($1100)?
car=ek1
tein super street. save another 2~300 for shipping
is that including labour and install or just the parts?
just parts.
the job is easy.. just do it yourself, and get your dad, or your mates to help you out. thats what mine did.
don't be an e-mechanic like all these other f*cks out there :P
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9...img6594yd7.jpg
note: yourfather is powered by spoon
well, with labour will be a bit hard... and yes yourfather i agree nothing beats hands on experience but if you dont know any1 who knows how to might be a bit hard i didnt and had to learn from the guy who still charged me cheap to install my sussy. :( anyway for 1200 you can get koni and eibach. mayb eibach and kyb agx, i doubt u can find decent coilies for 1100 brand new. theres quite many threads on this :p
maybe its best to buy second hand if thats ur budget
also depends on what ur car is going to be used for and how much of a drop you want etc etc.
my ek is currently dumped on stock shocks and reset springs and its pretty low but both wearing out now. Im thinking koni and kings. But where would I get koni's?
you could do that i guess, if you wanted to save but kings do sag a bit and i've seen it quite a fair bit koni's im not sure if the guy has anymore stock but look up the thread by muzz he got his really cheap from a guy off honda tech i think it was. 700 i think he got it for. or pm him and ask him but im not sure if the trader he got it off still has them in stock.
im sure you've heard lots of people say this but man saving up a little extra and doing it right does make a lot of difference. cause mayb 100-150 more u can get eibachs over kings and that might be your labour cost to swap them later down the track and kings got not that great resale value once they old... just my 2 cent assuming you dont install the springs etc yourself.
Go top of the range shocks with nice springs, instead of super cheap coilovers.
I got koni yellows shipped from the states for $690 all up! If your interested let me know and ill tell you where to get them. Theyd be cheaper now too with our very strong exchange rate.
Say $300 for good springs and your $100 under budget.
Or even better, ground control coilovers with custom rate eibach springs.
Just got mine shipped from the states for $454 (rember it would now be cheaper with the current exchange rate), so $1144 all up for my Koni/custom ground control setup, Probably $1100 with the better current exchange rate. This would be cheaper by $55 or so if i went with ground controls "off the shelf" rates, instead of custom spring rates.
Benifits of going with excelent springs/shocks instead of cheap coilovers.
1. Life expectancy. If your lucky, youll get 2 years or so of use from a set of cheap coilovers. People have been running the same koni yellows for 10+ years without problems. Koni yellows come with a lifetime warranty, there built to last!
2. Coilovers around the $1100 mark are basically throw away items. When a single shock blows, its time to throw the set away, not worth rebuilding, if they can even be rebuilt.
With a supurb spring/shock combo, if you have an issue with one of the shocks simple, replace the single shock, or simply have it rebuilt/serviced, instead of forking out for a complete new suspension setup.
3. No choise of spring rate with cheap coilovers, you get what they give. Imported coilovers are often oversprung for our australian roads. Theres no option to change springs if your unhappy with the ride.
With a spring/shock combo, you can easily change springs if you want to alter the ride quality. This is one of the reasons i went with the ground control coilovers and springs, i can order pairs of eibach springs for $69US in any stiffness i want!
4.Theres tons of support here in australia for servicing koni shocks. Very little support for cheap jap/taiwan coilovers. Most cant be rebuilt or serviced anyway.
Performance of good shocks like koni's, is much greater than the performance of shocks in coilovers around your budget, theres plenty of shock dynos out there to show this. Great shocks with quality springs = better product than any coilovers with average shocks. All cheap coilovers have average or less than average shocks.
IMO Springs and shocks, untill your planned to spend over $2000 on coilovers.
I vote for the bellow, ITS IN YOUR BUDGET :D:thumbsup::D:thumbsup:

Cheapest youl ever find!
$450US for the konis, $124US for shipping:)
$574US = $667AU
I got mine for $690 about 2 weeks ago, when the exchange rate was weaker.
Great company, they check there emails on a daily basis and are very frendly, contact by email if you cant PM on honda-tech, tell them Muzz sent ya!
Muzz, are you saying that my tein flex which I got for 1,200 plus shipping are throw away items, aren't adjustable and are oversprung for australian roads?
thats a good price for flex i'ld say but you must remember if you're up for a daily drive not all may be the bump warrior
my vote koni's with some ncie springs.
WOW $1200 for flex? Where did you get that from, i thought they were more in the $2100+ range.
Im guessing thats from the US, so probably $1400 after shipping which is well out of budget.
What rates are the flex?
Anyways you know what i mean, you cant clasify tein flex in the $1100 range of coilovers. Im talking about the super cheap coilovers that retail around here for about $1100.
remember labour is about $100-$250 , depending on where you take it (local DIY backyard guy or proper workshop).
So , that might be included in your budget or not (lets assume not since you worded it that way)
+1 vote for koni yellows , preferably imported from a US EBAY or similar seller for a good price (local is still abit too much) + eibach sportline springs.
Im about to my first sussy install this weekend, how long does it usually take you to do bennjamin? Do you recon i can get it all done in one day?
*offtopic*
i hope so lol.
If you arent taking the shocks apart its quite easy.
Get a range of sockets(plus ratchet)+ spanners incl. 10,12,14,17mm and 19mm. A breaker bar is good too. Plus 2 jackstands and a good jack.
maybe 3-4 hrs without any major hiccups?
3-4 hrs!!! I swap all 4 shocks out in under about an hour to hour and a half.
Very easy.
Front:
1) Loosen pinch bolt, LCA Bolt and top mounting Bolts, size 14, 17, 14 respectively.
2) Pull shock out
3) Put new shock in and do the LCA Bolt, Top Mount and Pinch Bolt.
Done!
Rear:
1) Loosen Top mounting bolts, LCA bolts and possible the LCA to trailing arm bolt.
2) Pull shock out and put in new ones
3) Just bolt everything up to order.
Done!!!
But Ok, if you're swapping the top mounts then it could take up to 3 hours. :-p
we refer to the first timer here , ie MUZZ :)
Hehe, i used the last band aid after cutting myself stripping the interior yesterday lol.
muzz let me know how the groudn control feels  might get that sometime down the track but for now sticking to my eibach's :D
I've been looking at some coilovers by PIC Performance, which has received some good reviews over in the states, all up it looks like its going to cost me around AUD$1,000 shipped.
Has anyone heard of these?
Wear gloves - seriously...
Tips:
1) Watch for the recoil when taking out the springs
2) Observe where the washers go - Koni's usually provide new washers, use them.
3) Watch that you set the correct perch height on the Konis
4) If it doesn't bolt it, don't force it...you probably have the angle wrong. Take out and redo.
5) Tighten the top bolt last, so you can adjust the angle of the shock and when tightening the top bolt, load the shock and spring.
Are you using Koni's at all?
good luck
Well, not really...for Double Wishbones, the alignment isn't really that affected as compared to a mcpherson strut ehrn you swap shocks.
If you drive it now, you'd probably find the alignment to be OK. Seriously, I've been swapping between shocks and have actually never gone for a wheel alignment, well, I'll just check the toe and camber myself with a string and ruler but they seem quite stable.
forgot to mention that i also installed a camber kit :P
so everything is out and the car goes nuts on the road lol
*Agrees*
ive gone thru about 6 different varieties of shock combos over teh last few years and never had a alignment done. Only , because the HEIGHT remainded the same/similar.
IF you drastically alter the ride height OR have hit a few potholes or bumps etc , its best to get an alignment to keep you TOE in spec. Saves tyres
Oooo...Camber Kits...Pics?
Here's my spherical bearing rear camber from mFactory

Here's one of my set of shocks

I have a similar type at the rear - awesome adustment

muzz, lucky u, GCC spring set.
very expensive quality product.
I also vote for koni yellows + spring set if u cant afford coilovers.
The only problem i see with buying something new from ebay is warranty.
There's a lifetime warranty but you can't just bring it back to the store and say
Sarp!
Just wait till i get my speedway engineering hollow swaybar, you aint seen a show off yet lol, just wait 6-10 days. < Jokes:p
Cheers for the pointers e240, im going to need to pull the stock shocks apart for the top mounts, is there any way to do so without needing to go out and buy some spring compressors? Do places rent out spring compressors?
Nice sussy bits there guys, how are the Mfactory spherical camber arms holding up? There really well priced:thumbsup:
Quick Q, i was wondering if anyone knows any places that sell universal shock boots? Theres a few on ebay that should be easily enough adapted, but there all in the states and i badly wanna get this done on saturday!
i managed to pull my strut tops off my stock sussy without compressors. i dunno if that was stupid or not lol. i just pointed it away from me and slowly carefully undid the top off. didnt fly too far.
u might get away with not needing compressor to put on the new lowered springs too.. casue im pretty sure the adjustable spring perch will give u the tension u need in the spring once done up. well thats what i did neway and worked fine!
1) MFactory camber arms are great.
2) I didn't use spring compressors either to remove the top mounts, just point away (making sure nothing is in front or back) and let it BOING!!! - watch where the washers go though!
3) You may need spring compressors for putting it back together but if you have the coilover adjustable perch, then you could just get away with it.
4) Shock Boots? the Dust covers? just use the ones you have on your OEM shocks, you might need to file the hole though..
5) again, make sure you place the washers correctly or you're going to have a very shocking experience.
Just want an opinion here guys.
I wanna go for the low look now... I was thinking of just getting the King Spring super lows for now and when the shocks die on me, was gonna get the koni yellows + eibach combo.
How long you reakon i've got until the stock shocks die?
Probably never if you just do city driving. I bought my EG with 200K km on the clock and it was still running stock shocks. I stripped the shocks and they're still damping very well.
Don't deny yourself the immediate gratification of aftermarket shocks...do it now!!!
http://www.classicgarage.com/hocirskit.html
hows the price on them?
Anyone on brisbane southside wanna give me a hand installing shocks+springs?
I may just get the lot when i get tax back! :P
got my car aligned. I must say that the GC/KONI yellow setup is the best thing ive ever done.. i never believed that a slammed car can ride like standard until now !!!
its freakin awesome !!
Seeing as you'll probably have all the tools muzz, i may just come by your place :P
if your still looking for sussy for an EK.
i have a set of toda fightex coilovers im selling.
Easy to obtain. Sponsors on honda-tech are more than willing to ship to Australia.
Probably cost ~$500 for a set of four shipped to your door (cheaper if you don't want to use them on konis for some reason) in any spring rate you so desire.
For a set of fully custom king springs for example will cost you around $350 for all four - with no adjustability and no fancy pants top-hats :D
Do any of these springs you guys suggest to couple with koni yellows have the option of progressive rates?
would it be cheaper at all for group buy? maybe we could all try and buy same time or some shizzle yo
Remember, the most important part, the quailty of the spring! That itself to me is worth the extra $100 (custom GC setup was $450) Throw in the coilover sleaves, and you got yourself a bargain when going for custom spring rates compared to king springs. Eibach are right up there with the best of em when it comes to quality springs, somthing which cant be said of king springs.
I dont believe king springs shotpeen there springs like eibach, which is why they sag over time, somthing a good spring will never do. And when springs sag, they do so eneven amounts, causing the corner weighting/ballancing to do a whole lot of weird shit. Believe it or not, poor springs are easier to find/more common than good springs.
[Current] King Springs have a lifetime warranty against sagging.
Sure have. I informed a friend of mine about my intrest in getting some custom springs. He mentioned King Springs and I said the exact same thing you did, that they are shitty and sag. I got owned :D
Hey Muzz Im looking for some advice can ya clear ya inbox so I can pm you regardign these Koni yellows from the US
for a full coilover suspension kit thats somewhat between street and track, you can grab skunk2 pro-s coilies from ebay for $600US + $100US delivery. for civics, they use a spring rate of about 8kg/mm at the front, and 6kg/mm at the rear. rideheight is adjustable.
..err i can give u the link for an ebay seller that currently is overstocked on civic EG and EK suspensions.
usually its 1100 EXACT.
but hes dropped it wayy down to 895AU includin postage for all 4, coils n shocks evrything included.
im gettin them soon too for my EG.
Its D2 Racing suspensions.
its like Tein, height adjustable, n caster/chamber settings.
its pretty sweet actually, just that adjusting the thing can be a lil .. err..
pm me who wants the link to his online store, has heaps of suspensions n sht there.
oh .. not to mention .. brand new :)
if its 11kg/mm front and 5kg/mm rear, then they've probably adjusted it.
according to the d2 racing website, you can adjust it between 3.5-22kg/mm. its only spring rate, ride height and damper adjustable. castor and camber require a separate castor and camber kit. they only include the camber kit with it i believe.
at those kinda spring rates, your ass will still hurt because the front's still too stiff. and its gonna be noticeable when you go over bumps unless you drive backwards.
lol ill just adjust spring rates ... i just want a lowered car and at the same time get comfortable ride (cruise speeds) and not wear tyre.
cbf goin full high speeds in a stock d15b motor -.-"
wait for sumfin more serious.
then lets talk :D lol
where can u get skunkies?
n how much r they?
they're currently $600US with $150US delivery, which is around 850-900-ish AU all up, which is fairly cheap. the link to the ebay store is...
http://stores.ebay.com.au/JDM-IN-STOCK-Store
skunk2 racing do a lot of honda racing in america apparently so they should be good.
EDIT: note that skunkies use your factory mounts, whereas TEINs would come with a pillow ball mount.
EDIT2: just read your siggy. electric turbos are p plate friendly but not car friendly. if you're talking about the force flow electric intake charger, it works perfectly fine... for an hour, at which point it shuts itself off because your battery dies and has to be recharged. if you run two heavy duty alternators, then theres no probs. you also have to risk the quality of the turbine. 27500rpm is pretty fast for an electric turbine, but if its fragile, you wouldnt want that shattering and taking your motor with it.
i dont think you can get skunkies in any other way in australia other than getting it shipped from the ebay seller. he's selling it for $200US less than retail so its not too bad.
as for aftermarket parts, i wouldnt know. i've built my car from ebay, and im not about to stop now =P
Done;)
Theres heaps of places in australia that you can get parts, just expect to pay a good chunk extra compared to importing the same products from the US.
For example, my shocks cost me $690 AU to get them sent from the US. Over here the average cost of the same shocks is around $950 AU. And thats was with a weaker exchange rate than the current rate.
If the skunk2s are $600 US + $100 US shipping, thatd work out around $833 AU. In australia, the cheapest youd find these skunk 2 coilovers would be $1300 AU+
Then you definatly do not want d2s with 11kg fr, 5kg r, spring rates. your car will be uncomfy and harsh. You cant "adjust" spring rates, you need to buy a completly new set of springs on top of the coilovers.
With suspension its a comprimise between comfort and performance, the d2s are aimed at performance, not a comfortable ride, and as you say you just want to go lower and have a comfortable ride.
Your best option is to order a good shock/spring combo from the US using shocks like KYB agx, tokico illuminas, and koni sports, and springs like tein, h&r, eibach, koni, k-mac etc.
Youll get a much better comprimise, a comfortable and well performing lowered ride, compared to using a set of coilovers.
actually, i dont think skunk2 racing have a distributor in australia. i think they're US only.
and skunk2 pro-s coilovers should be as comfortable as a spring and shock combo, as they are designed for the street twisties. the pro-c series will make your butt hurt tho.
but yeah, for a lowered look, springs and shocks.
How does the Skunk2 coilovers compare to the Tein SS and Buddy Club N+? I want to upgrade the suspension on my DC5R, I'm mostly concerned about handling improving and maybe be able to lower my car by 1"-1.5".
skunk2 and tein ss are on the lower end of the scale, mostly for street use...
skunk2 coils arent damper adjustable, just height, and tein ss arent firm enought for me
buddy club are way more expensive and mostly used for track racing...however if u can put up with the very harsh ride they are ok for street
i've got D2 coilovers in mine and i use the stiffest damper setting, on the street its not that bad, but i do like the firmer ride...
