Advice? Clutch @ Fly Wheel Selection

Hey Guys

Hunting around for a Heavy Duty Clutch for a D16. After something that is going to take around 200 - 250 wkw. Been Looking at ACT Clutchs XACT Street lite & Prolite fly wheel & Fidanza Fly Wheels. does anyone have any experience with these products? any pros and cons... also other feedback such as life? driveability ? Good for specific power brackets etc? This wont be going on a Full on race car, will be a street car but not daily driven. Also Do any traders out there stock these products or anyone know who does?

I have used competition clutch and clutchmaster. I say the clutchmaster and the flywheel. Also my friend Norris races for them full time!

the competition clutch felt stock to me. I have used all the different clutches as well, from stage 1-4 on both. Clutchmastwer 100%

I just bought a Exedy Lightweight Flywheel from eBay:-

$290 inc. postage & handling The exedy ones are better than Fidanza's because the Fidanza ones are made of aluminium.

i got an exedy clutch and fidanza flywheel package for a killer price, all good so far car revs heaps better now and its really fun to drive and rev match etc.

you might want a better clutch though but there are stafe 1,2,3,4 packages you can look at. i suggest get from USA as well, most probable will be cheaper.

America seems to have different spec clutches though. They only have racing stage 1-4. Like what's the equivilent of the Exedy Australian Sports Tuff clutch? It's quite confusing ....

i agree, finding it hard to make sense of some of the terms and specs they use

It does not mater what the equivalant is.

You guys need to ask questions:

Send the maufactures emails with the specs of your car:

Car and Motor
Use: street only, street/drag, drag only.
Daily driver / Weekend driver
Power and Torque output

They have the answers. They will recomend a setup for your needs. :thumbsup:

Why is that ?

i've found the exedy stuff to be superior to the us brands. Most us brands promise alot but fail to deliver. The fact that they are across the pond makes it harder again when there are defects in manufacturing.

He will probably be drag racing. If you go to a flywheel that is too light, you are going to bog your engine down off the line(due to the lighter rotational mass,inertia!) A lighter flywheel does allow your engine to rev more quickly, but lightest is not always best depending on your application.

mmm i dont see how it could bog you down off the line... if anything a lighter flywheel would give you better response and pickup... however when changeing gears your revs will drop quicker/more because there is less rotational interia since the fly wheel is much lighter... Some rough figures for you. At 8000rpm, a 5kg, 30cm flywheel, as compared to a 10kg flywheel, will hold just under 20,000 joules of energy less. A 200hp motor produces just under 150,000 joules per second, making the surpluss up in under 1/7th of a second.

When changing gears, the reduced rotational resistance of the flywheel is far less of a factor when compared to the actual compression event - but it is still a noticable difference.

with my fidanze 7.5 lbs flywheel its not hard at all to drive.

at first it was because you need to give a little more gas or be more precise with throttle off the line. also when jsut cruising and changing gears the revs really fall a lot faster in daily driving.

but when you are red lining or giving it a squirt you really cant notice it drop fast enough to effect you unless you cant shift well. also off the line i dont really see that it bogs, jsut give it a nice launch and off you go:)

Very easily, you can do it with your stocker. U let it out at the wrong time and the car looses to many rpms and bogs down.

problem is, when ur flywheel is so light, you window of letting out the clutch and not bogging down (or spinning wheels) is smaller.

U do gotta realise, most of the people on this site are NA, as well as most hondas are predominantly used, or think they are used, for track racing.

This has the best TORQUE maker know to the internal combustion engine on it its called BOOST,I think you have been reading to many internet bed time story's about flywheel weights dude.If your car bogs off the line simple fix give it more boost then the problem is solved.

Letting the clutch out "at the wrong time" and bogging is because of a lack of throttle (thus power), not lack of stored flywheel energy. The energy stored in a light honda flywheel isn't enough to get you moving, let alone moving fast.

Are yes thats right I forgot that ANTILAG/2 step rev limiter only works when your in gear damn my bad,mate give it up and read some more bedtime storys you might learn somemore.

I'm also in the market for new clutch and flywheels.

i've got a dc2r and mainly use for daily driving with once in a while drag.

I was thinking of Exedy Heavy Duty clutch and spoon lighten flywheels.

how is this combo?

Alot of people use this combo (organic clutch) and it works beautifully.

+1 vote. I have the exedy organic clutch and exedy lightweight flywheel ( 4ish kg i think?) and it works great and bites nice.

whats the difference between organic and heavy duty?

does organic = sports clutch?

Normal HD is like a stock clutch with a heavier pressure plate.
