All I know is that it can get worse whether you thrash your car or not. ie. hitting 'v-tecccc yo!'

Also, check your transmission/gearbox fluids/and other fluids, u may be lacking..

Ha ! I had exact same problem. Its the input shaft bearings all worn (if u clutch in = sound gone) and output shaft bearing (if vice versa).
To fix, replace all bearings = sound gone. Hurts the...

I advise u not to get another gearbox, if this would be the case, just replace the bearings.
Will probably work out the same but getting another gearbox may either have a fault. Just fyi..
Price...

Could be lacking oil in your gearbox and/or bearing/synchros are worn..

Get it checked before anything gets worse.

Been there, done that and trust me it's not cheap ! =\
