It is possible, I did it on my 99 CXi hatch. I didn't find much in the way of accurate information from the wiring diagrams either, I had to figure it out from trial and error.
In the end...
I'd start by checking for any error codes from the ECU (i.e. http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1901557) ... it might point you to a dead sensor somewhere ...
