I would be going 10-40 given the age of the car, unless the engine is known to be very healthy and tight.
Even a 10-50 if you're burning a bit of oil.
Ideally you want them within about 10% so that's probably a bit too much of a drop, but the compression figures themselves are very healthy so I wouldn't be too upset.

If you want a fun/zippy daily get an ITR GBox. Alternatively put a 4.9 FD, longer 5th gear and a helical LSD into your GBox. Shorter gears and an LSD are the best mods I ever did to my own car.

Ticking I tend to think valve lash, but this is very subjective mate. Could be a number of things. Could be a transmission component etc.
