Mates lexus car problem.. please help.

Hey, ma mate just rocked up to my house and the following happend..

There was a very distinctive single tone hum coming from the front left of the bonnet (near the engine coolant). The engine coolant sounded like it was boiling, and there was a white smoke coming from the front left of the bonnet.

Any ideas?
