Question Temperature goes as high as it can....

    Hi everyone,
Before i begin, i've done some searching & not come across something
like this. Well not within the first 5 pages with the key word searched
    being "temperature".

i've got a problem with my car.
The other day i was coming home from work. Halfway home, sitting in
traffic, when i noticed my temp gauge was reaching for the sky. Naturally,
turned the heater on as well as the a/c.

Took her down a side street, switched her off & popped the bonnet.

Like i've had problems before with radiators & cracked hoses. Usually i
detect something odd about the idle, smell, steam coming out of the
bonnet, & acceleration being odd etc.

But there was nothing wrong with either of those. Engine felt normally hot.
(I've tracked before, there's hot, really hot & hot enough to cook a bbq)
Nothing was leaking, no spray of coolant anywhere. Coolant in reservoir.

After 10mins with car switched off, with heater on & a/c. i noticed the
temp would go between the middle of gauge, then max past the H.
Like it would shoot straight up, no quick gradual rising. Just flick past the
    H.

Now naturally the car would cool down after being switched off with
thermo & a/c fans running... But it would change from middle to high. i
couldn't tell if there was a certain frame of time or not. But it would
    randomly.

I drove it home, a further 30mins with heater & a/c on still. Car running as
it should be. After letting it cool down for 2-3hrs i checked radiator,
reservoir, engine oil, under car for leaks, engine bay for leaks & everything
is fine. Engine oil is normal colour. No white smoke from exhaust. All other
    levels are fine.

I started her up. It warmed up normally, but when hits normal temp or a
bit above normal temp, that's when it spikes to max.

This was Tuesday. Car is still the same. Runs as normal as it did last week.

Anyone come across something like this before ?
I've got a few ideas as to what is wrong, thermostat, temp gauge, sender
    & maybe blockage somewhere...

    Hope everything i've provided helps.

    oh car is ED6 w/ b16a.

change your thermostat, had same problem for the cressida, sit in traffic needle goes up, but when you drive, it goes down!

we changed the thermostat doesnt cost much and doesnt take that long, and flushed the whole radiator and problem was solved. no high temperature atm.

i would say ur coolant temp sensor has more to do with it as it may be faulty and sending incorrect signals back to ur temp gauge.

Yup, i'd say replace the coolant temperature sensor as well.

i doubt its the thermostat. it would cause a gradual rise. not a fast flicking of the gauge needle.

Sounds like the temp sensor is farked or the gauge in the cluster is on its way out.

As others have said, its def the temp sensor.

Hmm might be a bit precautious & change the thermostat anyhow.
If it's the gauge in cluster, might resort for external temp gauge, till i can source a replacement.

Hehe it's uncomfortable seeing it that high. Guess it'd be like having a fuel gauge that stopped working with the fuel light on constantly. Knowing you just filled up a full tank.

    Thanks a plenty guys.

    DA9, eg, n360,
what if its cold if it goes hot and the car is just on ignition the gauge SENDER (NOT THE GAUGE) is stuffed. those from honda are around 40 bucks.. but i think u can get aftermarket ones. i just replaced mine in my b18a.

the sender on b series engine is just a single wire and are located between the front and rear coolant thermostat housing

and if u put ur heater on then the a/c aswell its not gonna help it its only if u have heater on..

It's a bit delayed. But i did get the problem fixed. Thermostat was playing up a bit, and the gauge in the instrument cluster was gone.

    thanks guys for all input.

i had kind of the same problems, the needle rise up to roof after i stop at traffic light, i got worry all the time when that happened, til one day, i got piss off by this, so i revv the shit out even the needle is going up. abd guess what, the needle went down.

asked around, most people think it was the hose is being block, so i took the hose out, just the top hose, rust was all around the inner surface. hence i think it was block somewhere along the water path by rust.

i didnt do much except change the whole radiator with new hoses, cos around 200 for the 2nd hand rADIATOR.

so what i am suggesting u to do is to take the hose out, and inspect it
    hope it help
