    What O-rings?

If the coolant was cold and the car had been running at operating temp, it prob was just the heater core emptying out as there would be quiet a bit of coolant in there after pulling off the hoses.

The bolt + hose clamp trick will work aslong as you use an adequate bolt.

if you just block it wont it cause a huge pressure buildup causing small leeks to appear at any minor fault in the cooling system?

    Just remember:
    Black smoke = burning fuel.
    White smoke = burning coolant.
Blue smoke = burning oil (which is BAD).

The cooling system is already under pressure. The heater core isnt a pressure relief. Your overflow tank is in system for the excess coolant to flow to.

What are you getting an engine crane and stipping it for?
Are you now scrapping the thing, i thought you wanted it running.

Changing a set of piston rings definately isnt a job for a beginner. You will end up spending a fortune on tools aswell to get the thing done.

I dont understand what you need an engine crane for.
