Removing door window moulding

My door window moulds are faded and the metal is showing through. It looks aweful from outside and considering Honda have these for $115 each side, I thought a reused can of Matt-black and sand paper is worth a try.

How do I remove this piece?

I assume It's just a matter of removing the inner door skin, then using a flat head screwdriver (wrapped in a cloth) and slowly prying it up?

Are cliping holding it in and when you pry them up will they break? Putting it back on, how are you meant to hold the clips in place from inside the door while you clip the piece back on from the top?

yes there are clips in the door, as you said you must remove the interior door card. the clips are the sort that you need to compress 2 sides to remove them. there may be some sort of glue, between the the moulding and door. i suggest using long nose pliers for those clips. clips are likely to be aged, so just be careful.

I've had to replace mine, and it's basically luck whether you break them or not. Push on the bottom of the molding, and pull at the top, they should pop off. Your better off getting some spare clips from a wreckers

I don't think it's necessary to remove the door trim, though if they break they will fall into the door.. And the only way to remove them then is by removing the trim.

its safer to remove the door card, you have a better chance of not breaking clips this way.

Wouldn't the glass be in the way anyhow?

I didn't have the skin on when i removed mine, though it didn't have glass in it either.

window wont be in the way if you have it all the way up. well thats how it is in an EG.

If you do break the clips, where can you get new ones from?

I tried leavering it out on the weekend, but I didn't have any luck. Because my paint is soo old and the moulding is just as old, it scratched the paint a little and damaged it.
I have a feeling I might have to do a ghetto respray with it attached to the door.

if thats the case, score the edges of the mouldings that touch the body of the car with a stanley knife. so you can split the paint from the moulding. do it along the whole length of the moulding so it could make it easier to remove.

from what im aware, if you break a clip you will need to order a new/used whole moulding.

If you rip the molding off, chances are that there will be a couple not broken.

i broke most of mine off when i did them, took them off a couple of times, first i covered them up in cloth tape (look in diy section on what to do) but that kept shrinking in the hot weather so i ripped the off and scraped all the black stuff off, major PITA but worth it, just polish the hell out of the aluminium so it looks shiny
