Tests on a stand alone gearbox

Just wondering if there are any tests you can do or inspections to make on a gearbox that is out of a car that I'm looking to buy? Short of taking it apart. It is LSD aswell so anything I can do on that front? ta

Rotate the input shaft by hand back and forth , note any excessive grinding or overly loud bearing noise. Put thru gears with a screwdriver in the selector , make sure fairly firm and ok to select gears etc

Just operate the box by hand as best you can. And look for any signs of excessive wear or damage.

    Look through the axle holes.
In a non-lsd box you will be able to see the pinion shaft.
A LSD will be able to see clear through from one side to the other.

    Nick.
