    vtec engine confirmation please

    Hi OZHonda members,

After searching n searching i still cant really come to a conclusion regarding some engine builds n their differences so im appealing for some advice.
    I have recently purchased a 94 EG5 VTI.
    Engine number is DY161xxxxxxx
    Transmission: automatic

I have looked around a few things to determine if this engine is really a SOHC vtec or if it is just a plain engine with no vtec.
The engine isnt listed in the following link http://www.ozhonda.com/data/codes.htm, but i did manage find an old post (2003) where "Weq" mentioned this d16y1 is vtec, http://ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=197 (3rd post)

    My questions are:
    1. Is this engine really a vtec engine?
    2. If this engine is vtec, what RPM will it be engaged?
    3. Does manual/auto differ in what RPM vtec engages?

    Cheers in advance

Get to wikipedia and look up the 'honda D engines'

What car do you have? Try to find the engine number. Its usually the first few digits.

'R18A1xxxxxxxxxx' which is what i have, indicates that i have an R18A1 engine

    Hope that helps.

look at the engine. if it has "VTEC" written on it, then its a vtec engine. this can also be proved by the location. if they are at the front of the engine, then its vtec. as per this picture

to see all of my build, checkout

D16Y1 and D16y8 are both VTEC engine, both Single Cam.

even tho on D16Y8 there is no 'VTEC' lettering on the rocker cover.

you can always tell from whether or not there is a VTEC solenoid.

    An AUTO VTI.

I'd like to see it, they're quiet rare (or atleast in my findings)

Did you happen to purchase it from a member here?

I'm pretty sure the car has got that solenoid last time i checked, I'll have to check it again just to make sure later on.

Your welcome to come by anytime to have a look .
Knowing the rarity of this car, as u say, of makes me even happier. It wasn't purchased from a ozhonnda member.
I managed to get it from a lady who lived locally frrom me.
