check the ABS ECU for codes, the code will point you in the right direction

i had the same problem with my ek4, the abs light would come on n basicaly stay on till u turn the caroff and back on etc etc, the problem turned out to the the front control arms in the car were stuffed n as i was driving the control arm would have play in it which in turn caused a chain reaction to the rest of the suspension which caused the abs sensor on the wheel to freek out,

so yeah u can try check ur suspension to make sure its all fine and nothing is loose.

check your brake fluid levels, when the sensor isnt picking up a good level of brake fluid, it will turn on the handbrake and abs light, just give it a look!. both parts from the master cylinder.

I have a similar problem with mine, though mine is on all the time..-_-
Theres a section in the DIY forum about Diagnostics, its just simply shorting two pins under your dash and then reading the error codes from the flashes on your dash.. I found it quite easy.. you just need to find the error codes for your car.. or you can just go through what they've said in the post above mine like checking brake fluid level, checking the cylinders etc.
    Good luck with it though
