    My DIY intake thermo

hey guys i was bord so i thought this would be a cool cheap mod.
cost me about $20, and i bought the thermo from Jaycar
i have installed a digital thermo to let me know how hot the
air is goin in my intake.

this is what it looked like in the box

firstly u have to find a place to put it in the cabin

    and another

next thing u have to do is run the wire that tells the temperature
outside though the fire wall and into the intake.

i ran my wire into the cluster so there wasn't wire haggin out
everywhere this was probally the hardest part taking out the cluster.

i forgot to take pics while i was doin this and its a pain to take
apart again so ill just walk though what to do on the delsols

    firstly undo these 2 screws

for the two button things on the top of either side of the cluster u
just simply pull them out there is not screws for these then unplug them

once u pull these button things out the top piece can be pulled out. there
were 2 clamp things holdin it in place at either end.

i've circled where the clamp things should be in red, the
three blue dots are where screws should be that are holding the cluster in place

theres about 3 meters of wiring that u dont need so i simply tied it up
next to the airbox using a cable tie.

this is the thinge that tells temperatures on the outside

this is where i placed mine in the airbox

i c you ask why dont i have an air filter??
thats another diy that i will put up when i have
some time, i made myself a custom cold air intake

its just this indoor/outdoor thermometer i got from Jaycar
im not sure of the part no., but on the bottom it says
ArtNo.:M-KT800 P1C sorry couldnt be any more help
i didnt know the no. myself when i went in, i was just lookin for a digital thermo read out device. becareful get the right one there is 2 on shelf, one only tells the temp inside, where as u want the one that tells both inside/outside and also tells the time

Hondas already use a IAT sensor.

Just Tap the signal wire and use that as your source.
Alternatively Tap it at the ECU harness.

The challenge here is to program a pic chip to translate the voltage to temp (specified in the datasheet for the IAT sensor <- readily available) and display it on a NICE VAC display.

well its really hard to tell beacuse i havent been able to go for long drives, but most of the time from what i can tell, the air that goes into the intake is the same temp as it is outside, if u start to sit in one place too long the temp goes up because of the engine heat, but once you get goin again it cools down. so this proves that a ram pod installed in the enginebay is suckin up hot air, also if stock rubber piping heats up so quickly, then i would think that stainless steal piping would just be sucking hot air as well(CAI that is) or be worst than heatwarped or stock piping. i want to move it closer to the intake plenum to see how hot the air gets by the time it gets to the engine. i'll find a way to mount it and post up the results soon

well i made a triple vtec light out of boredom, its pretty simple once u have parts
    Parts:
    - wiring about 1m (i used some wiring leftover from my sound system and it seems ot be ok)
    - a 12v led light (i got 3) each cost about $2.50
    - some electrical tape
    - wire striper (i used a lighter)
all parts i got from Jaycar

i ran all the wires behind the cluster and in the dash so it looks all neat and tidy
first of all u have to remove the cluster its the same as above

and this is a photo of the top piece removed

then u have to run the positive wire to the VTEC solenoid and the negative wire to a ground
i used the same hole in the firewall as the intake thermo.

i grounded the VTEC light to a grounding spot right next to the airbox, dont have a pic atm but
    will post one soon

this is what the VTEC solenoid looks like

and this is how i wired it up

the leds come with a red and black wire, obviously red=postive, black=negative.
wire up red to VTEC solenoid and black up to ground and tape it all up.
once its all wired up put the dash and cluster back together, postion the lights
where u want them and ur done

and this is where i put it in my dash

looks cool, some might say rice, but whatever give u something to do if ur bored

shouldnt you put the sensor in the manifold
i think its better reading it there once its passed all pipes ect

You might want to put the grommet back (with a hole through the middle for the wire). Otherwise after some time the insulating on that wire will get eaten up
