    Check engine light after exhaust modified

    Hi Guys,

    I hope you guys can help me out here, Today i took my car to an exhaust shop to get another resonator added in to quieten my exhaust. When they finished putting it on, they handed the car back to me. When I started the car, 5-7seconds later the check engine light pops up and stays on. So I tell the guy and he puts the car back up to check his work. Tells me that he didnt touch any of the sensors or anything while working on it and the exhaust guys were trying to pin the problem on me saying that it 'could' have been on before I took it to them. I'm like no piss off the light has never popped up for me and only showed when you guys modified the exhaust.

    They checked most of the connections to the sensors etc but couldnt resolve the problem. They told me to give it a day and it 'should' automatically come off. I was so late for work then I was just like ok fine i'll give it a day.

    Driving to work from the exhaust shop felt normal, nothing abnormal was happening with the car besides the light. The revs werent fluxuating or anything. Could it be that my car is adjusting to the new exhaust? Or could it be a sensor in the catalytic converter? I dont have much knowledge about it.

    From reading the above could anybody tell me what could have happened that triggered the engine light? And what are my rights if something majorly went wrong? I didnt cause the check engine light.. Will I have to pay Honda to clear it? help!~

    The automatically come off line was just some bullshit to shut you up.

    Whenever you get a check engine light, you should pull the code from the ECU. The result will pinpoint the exact device that is causing the problem. The procedure for doing so depends on the model year of your car - a subset of which can follow guides on this website (somewhere...).

    It will be cleared when you fix the problem. E.g. if it is complaining that the O2 sensor isn't plugged in, it will clear when you plug it in.

    Hey Clem,

    I never got a CEL when I did my exhaust on my car so they must've stuffed something up in the process. My guess is it could be a possible O2 sensor, either on the header or the cat converter. Doesn't make sense to have a CEL pop up just from putting on another resonator. Have you tried reseting the ECU and idle relearn? It's just a suggestion, I don't know if it'll make it go away though.     Before doing any resetting, get the CEL code read out. Then it will tell you which part has failed.

    They could have honestly just accidently bumped the sensor with an elbow or ratchet or something, ive heard there very sesitive pieces of equipment and it isnt uncommon for them to fail alot of the time.

    How do i get this CEL code readout? Do I need to take it to an autoelectrician or honda service?

    If your car is OBDII, then anyone with an OBDII scan tool can read it for you. Most mechanics should have such a tool (lots of them on sale on ebay too).

    Hey guys just an update, so I took it to an auto
    electrician and he tested usin his gadget and concluded there was an o2 sensor fault code. he could not tell me what was wrong unless he spent the time to take it apart to check it out. i wasn't ready to fork out the dosh for him to just check it out because he said a replacemen sensor could cost from 50 to $700 :/. went back to the exhaust shop and they utterly denied any damages to the car (typical). they said they would not pay for any damages unless there were any physical damages that caused the o2 sensor to stuff up.the autoelectrician can't determine wether it's their fault or 'wear and tear' unless he takes a look at it and he said he'd need my car for a day. there's probly little chance of there being physical damage so I'll prolly be pinned for his services of checking the sensor... sigh

    so I'm stuck in a messed up position now. the auto electrician said it was still safe to drive the car, just the light will be annoying. so what should I do now guys? I'm so fken stressed from work and this shit just causes more grief, I totally regret even touching my exhaust now..

    does anybody know how much these sensors cost to replace realistically? coz I dotn wanna fork out so much money to fix the car, looking at trading it in/selling it for a new car mid/endof the year anyway. would the dealer accept the trade with this check engine light?
