Thread: sub question

    sub question

possibly a massive noob question but i have no idea

ok, listening to music with fast double kicks and a heavy bass line over the top i notice my sub tends to end up making just a boooooooom sort of sound instead of actually playing the individual kick from the bass drum, now, is this the tuning of my sub, or would it be id need a sub if a faster efficiency rate? btw its only a soundstream, swex12 or something, nothing special.

I'm not sure what you mean by efficiency rate.

Box type and size could have something to do with it.

Which state do you live in? If your in NSW I could have a listen to hear exactly what your talking about.

by effiency rate, not even sure if thats what to call it, i mean how fast the sub moves in out and to make the sound and how fast it recovers after moving out sort of thing. if that makes any sense.

generally if u want a more responsive bass with lighter more frequent kicks (ideal for fast pace music: dance, electro, trace etc.) you want a small sub in a smallish sealed box.

How fast the cone moves back and forth, or the frequency, is a direct function of the electrical current imparted speaker's electromagnet (in this case it would be "music" from the amplifier).

Cone control is generally affected by the enclosure in which the driver is placed, the driver itself or the amplifier.

What enclosure do you have the sub in? What amp do you have? What other audio equipment do you have installed?

I would just say "responsiveness", if your really unhappy with its performance and after exhausting all other avenues you could even use a smaller subwoofer in your next setup, as a rule of thumb a smaller subwoofer would be more responsive than a larger subwoofer but do keep in mind, I did say "rule of thumb".

A smaller sub (all other things being equal) is not going to help one iota if the issue is half-assed installing.

A properly designed and build enclosure for the sub, and decent fronts (properly installed and amplified) able to play reasonably low will be the better fix.

responsiveness is what i mean haha, couldnt think of how to describe it. like you guys i was thinking a smaller sub, but would a port make the one i have now more responsive? atm its only a cheap strathfield sealed box. im probly thinking about this the wrong way too, when i played drums i used double kicks and to help the bass drum recover quicker so it could play the fast bass kicks louder you had to port the bass drum skin to let the air recover quicker, and thats how im thinking of a sub, which is probly the wrong way to think.

Do note that I had said "after exhausting all other avenues".
