Coldstart problems

Hi guys,
Did a search and could not find anything.
Car is a EK4.

It has problems starting in the morning in the cold,
it cranks and all, but when it cranks over, engine is weak and idle is about to die.
2nd time starting, goes easy in and always starts.

Warm start is very healthy and always first go in 1-2 seconds.

I'm going to check the spark plugs this weekend, but is there anything else I should be looking at?
Cos everytime even on cold mornings, 2nd start works, only the 1st time doesn't start properly.

Perhaps the throttle and idle valve would benefit from a good clean down. Also check the coolant and ensure no air is present in the system. GL
