I had my Subaru B4 Gearbox over-hauled with some of the hardest parts to find in the market (the first time I smashed it) for $1800... you're shopping in all the wrong places.

Yeah mate was is the exact problem with the gearbox? You might find its such a small fix to a problem. I have seen so many people take a 'rooted' gearbox to a shop and they straight away say its stuffed - fork out 5000.... It might be a $50 bearing or something similar. Whats going wrong with it.

Agreed that's a high price... There are a lot of individually replaceable parts in a manual gearbox, I can't think how you could stuff it so bad that you'd need to replace the whole gearbox at once unless the whole box and case has accident damage. Did they give you a reason why the gearbox isn't repairable? Were there metal particles all through the gearbox and diff that have stuffed them?

Sounds like you might be getting shafted, they're probably trying to sell you a gearbox and diff for $7k, and taking your existing ones to recondition and sell to some other poor sod.

Get a 2nd opinion if you can.

****ing just get the stupid thing rebuilt... why the **** would u go new...
    rebuild it for 2500-3000....
Are u serious man.. can't believe no-one has mentioned that..
Rebuilding it would basically be making it new again and would be the same price as a second hand one...
As others have said, the beauty of manual gearboxes is that there are lots of individuals parts etc etc

Rebuild it dude. Same result in my eyes.
    Cheers

If it is just the diff, just replace it. I had my diff replaced with an LSD and if it is a workshop with experience working with Honda gearboxes, there shouldn't be a problem. Labour should be between 1500-2000. The stock open diff is cheap. Getting the gearbox off to access the clutch is already 3/4 of the way through to replacing the diff!

As Adrian Euro said, the problem with his car is noisy differential bearings. At 196,000 kms this is quite possible, especially if the Gearbox has not had regular oil changes and / or he is an enthusiastic driver who launches his car hard or wheel spins occasionally as this places extra load on the Diff Bearings. (I would recommend a G/Box oil change every 40K regardless of how the car is driven).

If he intends to keep the car the best option would be to completely dismantle the G/Box & diff, check all bearings & syncro's due to the high kms, & replace whatever is required. I would guess around the $3000 for that through an independent G/Box specialist. On the other hand if he is not going to keep the car then a 2nd hand box could be a better option.

You can get 2nd hand Dc5r boxes for like $1600. That comes with LSD.

The trouble with buying any 2nd hand component is you don't know what condition it is in until it is fitted to the car & test driven. That's a lot of work down the drain if there is a problem. Been there, done that & it was the 4th second hand unit fitted until it was satisfactory - that is a lot of labour. Many times the first 2nd hand component fitted had a problem.
